This game has a long and complicated lineage which means we strove to present as close to the original as we could, fixed where possible, and kept legacy issues when/where there wasn't an alternative.
Trust me, as someone who screamed like a banshee when I was there for the PC port announcement in person, you're not going to find someone more pleased at how this has turned out!
Indeed, I'm only midway through Angel but it seems like a pretty solid port so far. Hopefully the relationship with Engine Software is able to continue after this and The Caligula Effect: Overdose.

Shit, hearing the heaven smile's laughter again, nostalgia blast.

Bought the special edition because why not. It's 2018 and I'm playing a crispy clean Killer7 on my wife's shitty notebook with a PS4 controller. I don't know if I'm just easy to please, but I'm so happy. I love this game. Thanks Nisa.

The UI and animated cutscene changes are the most impressive to me tbh. I can't imagine the process of updating those assets to be easy at all, so kudos. It feels weird saying the definitive version of Killer7 is the PC version, haha! The GC has finally been dethroned.

Those Engine folk do pretty masterful work. We have an interview with one of the staff going live later this week.

Oh shit, this is out now. Forgot about it. I never had a chance to play it back on Gamecube. I'll keep my eye on it for sure.

EDIT: It's nice to hear an old port has been done well, for once.

This game's too fucking weird. I keep bumping into enemies I forget to "track". Is this normal? Because it feels too janky so far to be my cup of tea :/

If you hear laughter, tap the scan button to reveal them. There's a bit of a thematic element to why you go through that extra step, but I will say no more on that subject.

But yeah, it's a weird-ass game even for 2005.

Does anyone know of a way to get Gamecube controllers working on this with that adapter? I know it's a bit of a long shot, but the game feels like it was made for that controller, so I thought I'd check.

Ok it seems like it was running at 1440p. It seems to take into account the Windows DPI setting so you'll need to do 100% scaling for proper 4K.

It's the best the game has ever looked though easily. Proper widescreen plus high-res HUD.

Er, so what does this mean for me who plays on a 4K TV but has to use 150% scaling to see anything? Is my resolution gonna get messed up? :(

I don't understand why a 3D rendered game wouldn't have a way to specify resolution.

Edit: Also is the game fully playable with a controller? I see the store only lists partial support.

Press L-Shift to scan them so the Heaven's Smile become visible. You can wail on them after that.
I figured out I can scan them soon after but... I dunno, I can respect what it's trying to do but to me this is just trying to be bizarre without making me care about it.

I'll shelf it for now I think. Thanks!

And I'm really happy this exists either way.

Tried it with my DS4 and it works perfectly. You'll need an input wrapper of some sorts though (I'm using DS4Windows).

Looks like they forgot to remove some GameCube-specific terminology when saving, assuming that this text can be easily changed.

Edit: Also having a Slot A and Slot B for saves in itself is weird, when it's not on GameCube.
I think this was intentional as "power buttons" and "memory" cards aren't specific to any one console, it is a nice retro thing to leave in the game. I kinda wish they had done that instead of replacing "Tapes" with CD's in the Tony Hawk HD remake.Like, that was probably the most boring thing they could have replaced them with, and they were cool and not in need of replacing in the first place.

This is obviously a "console" save screen, so why would they re-do it to look like something more modern and arguably much more boring?

This is not acceptable in 2018
You are kidding right? Who cares about achievements in 2018? That is so 2010. Now people are just irritated by them anyway. Especially when they interrupt an epic final cutscene to tell you you just "beat the game" or they pop up to tell you that you cleared a tutorial, or killed your very first bad-guy. As if you weren't aware of what you had just done. Achievements are just utter nonsense that i find cluttering, out of place and very distracting as very inopportune moments.

That's weird. Steam has it's own built-in DS4 wrapper you know? And imo, it's better than DS4Windows. It even works wirelessly and is configurable on a per-game basis. (Steam>Settings>Controller>General Controller Settings.)

Anyway thanks for letting me know.

I know but the only games it works in is MHW and Hitman. Everything else requires me to use DS4Windows.

Tempting... but with everything else coming out soon, plus me having already spoiled myself with a comprehensive lets play, I'll have to pass for now. Maybe later when it's more fresh in the mind.

This has been such a good GHM week for me. New info about Travis Strikes Back, my 20th Anniversary GHM Zine came, AND a swift release of Killer7. It's like an early Christmas. Glad after tonight I'm done with work till Sunday night, plus with this snowstorm I should be able to plow through Killer7 again.

So is the port good? Does it have usable K&M controls or it's better to use a controller? Need to support these types of releases.

It's a great port. KB+M is perfect, controller support is identical to the GC release, unlocked framerate is a game changer and widescreen is much needed. You can rebind all the controls and being able to switch between the Smiths by pressing a number key is so good. Not to mention language support if you're into that kind of thing. I know it's a meme to shit on Killer7's gameplay but it seriously feels like a completely different game with KB+M.

Cam clarke as Ulmeyda is just MWAH

He chews through the scenery, the background, the whole damn scene, and it is just... Perfection.

Sunset, Part 1 is a masterclass in evocative art direction.

This game aged like the finest wine.

It turns out what was originally a technical limitation (use of gradients instead of textures for many surfaces) turned out to be a huge boost in turning out great 13 years later. Who knew?!

So I'm on Cloudman right now. Not going to lie, the mouse trivializes the combat a lot but it feeeeeeeels so good. I kind of want to whip out the ol' steam controller and try gyro aiming.

Also the dude who retextured all of Travis' shirts needs a raise ASAP.

Yeah, maybe "forgot" was a bit careless in hindsight since it's been implied to be deliberate. I just happened to initially put it into the same category as the myriad of console-to-PC ports that request "please don't turn off your console" whenever you save your game (like Resonance of Fate's PC version and more), which is obviously incorrect when you're not playing on a console. Other games, such as Mega Man 11, correctly say "please don't turn off your PC" or something similar or more agnostic instead. I didn't mean to suggest redoing or replacing any menus or assets or changing appearances so much as rewording the text therein to be more contemporary or platform-specific, is all.

Da fuk is this
Also, not a good idea to play without a controller. While mouse aiming is nice, the tutorial controls are only for Xbox controllers.

The game looks great in high resolution, kb+mouse controls feel nice and don't make the game as easy as I thought they would. Forgot how bizarre it was and I'm glad all the weird stuff was kept (like Samantha not saving, I'm waiting for people to complain about this).

My only complain is that all the button prompts are for controllers and you can't access the remap buttons menu in-game so I had to go back to the menu and check which buttons did what.

I caved and bought it.

Might have to wait until the weekend, because while I loved the game when I was in high school, I may need alcohol and/or friends to enhance the experience this time
