EDIT: This isn't about Blowjobs.

I've just finished my 2nd class of it and despite getting nearly choked out/locked at least ninety times, I just had the time of my life!? I don't know what's going on honestly. I was doing Judo for 2 years before this (I'm a yellow belt) and I don't know how to say it, but a bunch of little things added up to make me finally seek out something new. Then last week I went to my first BJJ class, loved it, did another one today, still loved it, and I want to keep on going!

Also, a little minor thing, but I just love how the art seems to not be punishing me for my weight. I'm pretty athletic, but still a 5'8, 20 year old 100kg woman. In Judo I felt like shit doing everything and never had training partners that matched. In BJJ so far I have a lot of people of similar ages/weights as I, and even the "smaller" people can seriously still fuck me up!

And there are more women on the mat here too! And more diversity!

And no, this thread isn't to shit on Judo. I still love the art, even if it's unsustainable for me. I just wasn't expecting to have this much fun doing BJJ.

I think we have had a few of these threads before. A thread talking about the origins of BJJ eventually became the unofficial OT for a bit.

Also, don't stop Judo. Modern rule set has taken too much of a step back on newaza and making lower body attacks illegal is super dumb. However, unless you wanna learn greco, their upper body fundamentals are still the best around.

I still like the style, but I keep getting hurt. I'm actually recovering from a shin muscle injury that makes it hard for me to run or do anything impact wise. Ironically I can still do BJJ fine so far because it's all on the ground, but anything standing right now is a no no.

I'm also moving to BJJ so I can have a chance at competing. I went to a Judo tournament this year to try and compete, and they told me they couldn't find a match for me. I would've been fine and took the L, but then I looked around and realized that there aren't alot of women over 18 doing Judo period. This is a problem for all martial arts but it especially hit me hard for some reason.

So my perspective was that I kept getting injuries (earlier this year I had a scary hip issue and a concussion that happened at the same time), didn't really fit in with the dojo culture and now I don't even have a real chance at getting to Black belt (because in my country you need to have tournament points to do so). Hence the switch. I'll still probably do Judo, but in a much more limited capacity.

Good for you! I've always heard good things about it. Boxing is more my cup of tea (still trying to find a place after my previous gym closed), but BJJ is by most accounts one of the more practical arts you can learn.

No Nut November taking a toll on me.

I've tried NNN. Didn't last long; the floor exercises absolutely drained me.

Takedowns are where most injuries end up happening thats not changing haha

How long or often are the classes? Wanted to try it here but never got around to is since too many things came up.

I plan on moving early next year and there's a pretty good BJJ School in the area I am looking to move to.

My fitness is more centered around overall body strength than trying to look big and buff, and I do a lot calisthenics and body control exercise so I feel BJJ would be the perfect discipline for me. I am 6'2" 170 btw. Looks a lot of fun and very cerebral.

BJJ was some of the best training I've gotten besides boxing. Super useful, I do wish we trained without Gi's as it isn't realistic unless you're competing.

My girlfriend loves it and has been doing it for years. Her main issue is getting paired up with new male students who obviously work out a ton and just get super agro and try to manhandle her instead of learning from her.

Other than that it really is something she is super passionate about.

Classes are usually 50 - 90 min. Some gyms do calisthenics seriously at the beginning and some start with technique immediately. My gym has classes between 4:30 and 9 on every weekday as well as a 7 am one and a noon one. There are also weekend classes. In addition to class there is also sparring time and open mat time.

It depends on the gym honestly. Also I should mention that BJJ is insanely expensive most of the time. I'm getting a huge deal with my gym, but most BJJ places, esp in big cities, can charge over $100 a month. I know a place that charges $140. You'll also have to buy a gi (70-100, I use a single weave judo gi) at least, but a lot of gyms are moving towards no gi, so I don't know how that's going to work out.

As for the rest, the classes are usually 1-2.5 hours long, and mine goes for 4 days a week, but I know some places that go up to 6 or 7 days. If I were in your position i'd try out a free class and then go from there. I hope you have fun!

OOh! My place does Gi and no-gi training. During sparring on my first day I remember just throwing off my gi after a certain point bc it just got too hot.

Still got my ass kicked though.

Congrats!
Hope you stick with it, it will be crazy to you how good you become in just 6months or so.
Those fresh white belts will melt like butter!

I had to stop due to some injuries mounting up (after nearly 10 years of training).
I still miss it a lot and I'm currently thinking of going back. Just lifting weights is just no substitute.
Maybe I just need to be more careful about who I'm rolling with, I need a "less testosterone, above 35 years old" group.

I get that feeling. I'm coming on 4 years and there's a struggle between pushing really hard to final get.my purple or just relax and go along with it. I mean I will just keep my pace, but the push is on the lack my kind haha.

It's fun because combat is fun. We are merely apes who have the privilege of overthinking things. That adrenaline will kick in just like it does for chimps taking out a rival group for resources.

I'm going the opposite way lol
I've done a few years of BJJ as a second martial art but due to not much consistency I have only got to a 1 stripe white belt.
I'm moving soon and have decided I will switch to Judo when I move for a couple reasons
1. throws are my favorite part of jiujitsu
and 2. Judo will only cost $30 a month compared to $120 for BJJ
