It's funny, I didn't click with the 1-18-08 date, but my immediate thought was "the first Cloverfield trailer".

So yeah, OP, this was the best.

Feels like you might be conflating this with Meet Joe Black, which came out a month before Wing Commander, was the first movie with the Phantom Menace trailer attached, and was infamous for alleged walkouts after the trailer. So much so, that many theorized that Joe Black's initial box office was vastly overinflated by trailer-seekers.

Wing Commander came out several months later and had a different Phantom Menace trailer attached.
And the original trailer also ran in front of The Waterboy.

I agree with OP. The mystique of "just what the hell are we watching", no title, in the days before every detail of every project were online for all to see (for me at least). I remember checking the IMDb boards and all the theories.

Super 8 evoked a similar feeling a couple of years later but it's a very different movie.

For really, tell me this ain't the hardest trailer u seen in a fat minute.

Like this shit is so hype that I don't feel the need to watch any future trailer for the movie, I'm already sold and don't need any more dope shots given away.

This trailer brings so much heat that unless KOTM fails to deliver on it, Kong vs Godzilla needs to be packing a huge surprise like a 3rd act team up against Destoroyah cuz that shit is already looking like a step DOWN from this besides the insane human cast.

Did absolutely nothing for me and the movie looks... ok.

Cloverfield's marketing was one of the first major uses of social media viral marketing and it was very effective. A lot of studios studied it and have tried to emulate it.

Blair Witch and Phantom Menace are also great picks.

No but remember when Passion of the Christ didn't have any trailers in front of it at all and everyone was like "oh this is srs bsns"

This movie was a nightmare for theaters in the bible belt. Hoards of baptists riding in church vans and causing problems in the parking lot. Weirdos crying in the bathroom and making messes everywhere. Church groups getting mad cause there wasn't a discount. People doing weird shit during the movie like standing up and testifying.

It wasn't. Everything it did was already done with Blair Witch Project. From the Found Footage technique, building mythology through marketing, using the internet to go viral. That was done 9-10 years before Cloverfield.

I'm thinking some of you were too young to realize the impact of BWP had among the industry.

I first saw the Star War ep 1 trailer before "Meet Joe Black". I, along with literally half the theater - left after the trailers were done.

No trailer will ever be more important than Phantom Menace.

I still remember sitting in the theater hyped up on the Transformers movie and then having that trailer play.
Idk if it was just my theater, but the one I was in didn't even show the "This preview has been approved.." green screen or studio names before the trailer. It just kind of started and everyone in the theater thought that the movie may have started.
And I swear we all still thought it was just a clever intro or something, even after the Statue of Liberty's head rolled down the streets of NYC.
Then the date 1-18-08 came on the screen and everyone cheered.
I cheered. My cousins cheered. My friend cheered.

And no one even knew what we were cheering for.

Has any movie theater trailer been like that since?
I don't go to the movies as often as I used to, so I'd be interested to know.
Yea I distinctly remember seeing this before Transformers too, and I'd say no, nothing has matched it since. Mostly because everyone watches trailers online nowadays and nothing will ever be that mysterious ever again.

I'd say the Phantom Menace was bigger though. I remember they played it on Sky fucking News over here.

Personally thought it was lame when I saw it. Also agree with ElectricBlanketFire, no one cheered where I was at. The only movies I've been at where any cheering happened were SW movies, and never for previews.

Great choice, that trailer had ghe entire internet over-analyzing and speculating on what it actually was.

I feel the 300 trailer deserves a mention. The hype for that film was almost entirely generated by that trailer and it generated a thousand memes. It had a decent cultural impact.

I remember that teaser... it was quite something. I do remember everyone in the theatre talking about that after the movie we saw ended. It was pretty crazy. The hype and lead up to that film... so good.

What movie was it for?

I have no idea what you are referring to..I'm going to assume it is clover field. Movie sucked.

Only trailer that had any impact for me in my life was Episode 1

I only knew what you were talking about because of the Statue of Liberty head. The date is meaningless to me.

I don't know what movie OP is talking about, but I remember people going nuts over the Phantom Menace trailer.

Wow. Such impact. Much Hype.

Cloverfield wasn't all that big in terms of box office, so while it was big in certain circles, plenty of marketing campaigns were more effective.

Like The Lion King.

Or if we want to stick to January films, American Sniper.

The visual of people clapping at the end of a trailer in the theatre is really funny.

I didn't get to experience the Cloverfield trailer in a theatre anyways but I do remember the movie being somewhat of a phenomenon at the time. Still haven't seen it though

I think this is easily the best trailer I've seen since maybe Prometheus. Love the music.
