In this excerpt from the Game Informer Show, Ben Hanson Skypes in developers Rami Ismail (Nuclear Throne), Alex Hutchinson (Assassin's Creed III, Far Cry 4), Ryan Payton (Metal Gear Solid 4, Republique), and Jake Kazdal (Space Channel 5, Galak-Z) to share their impressions and insight

I haven't seen this discussed anywhere here on Era, haven't found a thread for it, but this is a podcast I've watched yesterday that gives a different insight on Read Dead II and I agree with a lot of the points raised. It's basically a lenghtier discussion on what RDRII does spectacularly well and its shortcomings. It's a long video, but I really recommend to check it out.

Hit my horse with a tree if old.

Nice to see 4 developers point out how the press collectively embarrassed themselves with this one.

Woohoo another day another negative RDR2 thread. I guess we'll see all the usual suspects here.

It literally is a video of video game developers explaining what they liked and didn't like about the game. The confirmation bias surrounding this game is ridiculous. I don't think I've ever seen a game with this much adverse reactions to any sort of criticism holy shit.

I want to hear what Miyamoto has to say about this game.

I'm sure he would flip tea table left and right.

Someone on here called it honeymoon period, lol. Imagine what people will think of RDR 2 after the honeymoon period...

It's weird to me that this game received almost immediately such negative feedback. Plenty of negative threads on here since the very first days it released until now. Maybe expectations were too high, maybe someone disperately wants it to be bad compared to their favourite open world game, i don't know, but it's defnitely something unusual.

The amount of salt if RDR2 wins most of the GOTY awards will be epic.

The thing with the game (at least in my opinion) is that it does so much well but also it does a lot of baffling not so great stuff too. It leaves me really conflicted.

I mean, I adore the game, but people have genuine criticisms to make, so you can't fault them for that.

In terms of general negativity, it is nothing unusual. The negative backlash towards a game is always directly proportional to how popular said game is.

It´s incredibly shiny, but once your eyes have adjusted you start to see a deeply flawed game.
Yeah. I can't call it a bad game but the flaws are really blatant and they just add up. Then when the game truly shines, you forget about about them but then remember the flaws again. Then it shines again and the whole process constantly repeats.

RDR2 is a ground breaking achievement in gaming but PLEASE for the love of god DO NOT COPY THE SLUGGISH CONTROL fellow developers....

Especially the input delay, shit pissed me off so much in Prey that I refuse to play it even after it was fixed.

What is it on this forum with people being unable to handle criticism directed at games they like

Repeating the same opinions over and over again brings nothing to an healthy discussion. There is no real discussion when few individuals decide the world must know how bad one particular game is.

This happened with Persona 5, FF XV, RDR2. Every game that has legimitate flaws but magnified in every possible way by the same usual suspects.

I haven't played GTA5 nor have I actually liked anything Rockstar did in the past ten or so years, yet I feel like I should get RDR2, simply because it generates so much discussion.

IMO The Warriors was probably their last completely good game.

Man, RDR2 is gonna break families at this rate. I'm in the #VastlyOverrated team, but at least we can all agree that it'll be a game changer for the years to come in what it does incredibly well.
I didn;t watch the whole video but the parts I watched were interesting.

Could say the same for the same usual defenders.
These things go both way but it would be much better if each side just STFU and carry on discussing games.

The rami ismail hate in the yt comments is incredible Lmao

He is probably one of these coolest and nost thoughtful game developers 100%

Agree with him a lot too rdr2 is incredibly technically impressive but there is stuff I didn't gel with as well

Same with gta v technically so good that I actually triple dipped on it but mission design and on foot controls and shooting are absolutely not why I bought that game

The reaction of some on here to RDR2 reminds me of when an incredibly vocal minority of people were claiming people only liked Breath of the Wild because they were in the honeymoon period. 9 months later it swept the GOTY awards both on here and on review sites and all the 'honeymoon period' talk swiftly died down. People still point out that they don't like the game, as is their right, but the belittling of other people being blinded by the shiny new Zelda game doesn't happen anymore.

RDR2 will have a similar trajectory. People just get upset that they don't like the highly acclaimed new critical darling as much as everyone else and will shout 'honeymoon period!' and accuse those who like the game as being blinded. It makes one feel better if lots of people who like something can be dismissed as 'wrong', uncritical and blinded by the shiny new thing.

I can find plenty of flaws with RDR2 but they don't outweigh the positives or the holistic experience the game gives me. Same as with BOTW, in fact. People who write a shopping list of negative things about a game and then just use that list as some kind of proof that the game isn't worthy of the praise can't see the wood for the trees. That's not how artforms work.

Criticism is fine. Accusing those who like something you don't as lacking critical faculties isn't.

Genuine complaints sure. Considering no game is perfect you can say RDR2 has clunky controls, confusing systems, but i tend to judge the general impression the game gives me after finishing and RDR2 was incredible, so much more than RDR.

Instead i see some people identifying the flaws but not giving enough credit for the rest of the magnificent elements the game has. Rockstar tried to bring open world games to a whole new level, they tried something new, not everything worked, but holy hell it was worth it for everything else it does well.

I mean, i agree generally with this. But by the the time I saw this same type of video for BOTW it was basically filled with almost nothing but praise. But this video is pretty critical of I it.
