Spotify for the Apple Watch is rolling out to all users over the coming week. Announced by the company today, the release follows a beta version of the app that appeared in early November, and comes well over a year since Spotify hired "Snowy" developer Andrew Chang onto its team to help build the app.

Spotify says the app provides users with useful playback controls and the ability to connect to their music speakers and other devices through Spotify Connect. Like Apple Music on Apple Watch, Spotify subscribers will now be able to hit play, pause, skip, and rewind songs by interacting with their Apple Watch.

Additionally, users will be able to access their recently played songs and favorite the currently playing song by tapping the heart icon on the Apple Watch screen.

And while we continue to innovate, we have many exciting things coming up —including the ability to listen to your music and podcasts offline.

Seems a bit barebones at the moment, but at least it's finally here. Hoping for that offline playback sooner rather than later.

Here I was thinking that Samsung had that shit locked down with the Gear and Galaxy watches.

I'm hoping Spotify would come to other wearables. I would like to pick up a Garmin Fenix in the near future.

So no offline? Play/pause etc are all covered by the default now playing screen.

I actually uninstalled pocketcasts on the watch as their app takes over from now playing as the default face, but doesn't let you control volume with the Digital Crown. Being able to select episodes to listen to isn't a big deal if you still need your phone with you anyway

Very nice. I'm hoping to pick up a new Apple watch around December or January so this is great timing.

I'm surprised they didn't have one already. My Gear S3 had it the day I got it back in March of last year.
They snatched a fan made app with MORE features than this two years ago. It was never heard of again.

The lack of a Spotify watch app actually made me sub to Apple Music. Ultimately the far better choice for me. Been enjoying that Watch + AirPods only live quite a lot. The watch automatically grabbing your playlists and podcasts for offline play is so good.

I can't believe they're on the 4th version of the watch and this is only just coming out. Just shows the pentration this watch has had on the market. Ie next to none.

Either the timing was wrong with wearables or just the vast majority of people are happy enough with their phones

Spotify has the play anywhere feature which makes this a small benefit. Tbh I never saw the deep need for one other than playlist selection.

It isn't a penetration issue, Apple TV also doesn't have a Spotify app.

I asked someone once if it did. And he told me that they didn't cause they were probably pushing apple music.
lol nah, this is completely on Spotify. As I mentioned above, some dude singlehandedly developed a better app than what they released now years ago.
Spotify seized it shortly before he was about to release it for legal reasons.

E: Actually it seems like he has and does still work with them? I wonder what went wrong for them to take another year after he was basically done and then release an app that has less features and doesn't even support the latest hardware? Corporate bs probably but that just about proves my initial point.

It's the top selling smartwatch in existence. You see them pretty much everywhere now.

Look at actual sales data if you want to judge its market penetration.

It might be the best selling smart watch but it doesn't mean that there is any market pentration in wearables. Big fish, small pond.

I would strongly disagree you see them everywhere.

Most people I know don't want notifications on their wrist. Phones already dominate our brains enough.

The problem with 3rd party apps for the watch is that a lot of developers pushed out watch apps when the thing first launched in 2015 and the available APIs at the time were terrible and limited.

They then decided they had checked that box and moved on to other stuff without updating their watch apps.

I love my watch overall but I use approximately zero third party apps on it.

Watch allows you to have the phone dominate you less. Also very handy at work to have discreet notifications

Not having a Spotify app isn't a big deal really. - Watch isn't designed for lengthy use, and if you use the Spotify app on iPhone you can still skip/play/pause/change volume etc on the watch

Wait but can I go running without my phone and listen to songs like I can Apple music? Otherwise it's pointless to me.

Wait what? I can't stand Apple, but c'mon

Can you explain a bit further?

Compare the amount of time the apple watch has been on the market to where the iphone was at that time in it's lifespan.

Only tech nerds and people who bought it as a staus symbol have the watch. The apple watch will be a legacy product in 3 years.

Funny. My Watch app says I have Spotify on my Apple Watch, but when I look at the list of apps on my watch it's nowhere to be found. Maybe they haven't rolled it out fully yet?

Just so you know, I wasn't using the word tech nerd in a derogatory fashion.

I have seen people wearing one but I've never seen someone use one.

Do you or anyone you know actually find it useful?

I hate the watch personally. One of the ugliest smart watches on the market with an awful UI, at least compared to Android equivalent, and the strap costs through Apple are just insane. However I've seen people of all shapes and sizes wear them, and a few people where I work use them all the time. It's especially helpful with the cellular version so you don't have the phone on your or get your phones out of your pocket in situations where you can't or shouldn't.

No offline support kinda ruins this for me, but hopefully that's resolved soon. This is basically the killer app for my Watch, can't wait to go out running with it.

I find it very useful. I mean it's not like you are going to see someone spend half an hour looking at it. You use it for a few seconds at a time, typically.

This won't show up for me on my Watch app, I have the latest version of Spotify installed and launched it.
Same here. Weird thing is, if you search the watch Appstore, I get a result with pics of the watch interface!
Maybe you just need to go to the Watch app on your phone and tap Install for the Spotify app - if you don't have auto-install enabled. If you don't see the Spotify app there, try restarting both your phone and the watch at the same time. The app will most likely appear in the Watch app then, so you can install it. It's embarrassing that Apple still hasn't ironed out this problem, which has been there since forever.

Again.... what??? Now we goalpost moving. Now, you HAVE seen people wear them, but since they aren't "using them".... the tech piece is pointless??

I got my watch because I wanted a watch, and I'm partial to brand. (INVICTA ONLY). The wife suggested instead of spending $250 on a typical watch, I should buy a smart watch. Got my first wearable at the beginning of the month, and I change the face at least twice a week, and I can't tell you how cool it is to send and recieve texts at work/meetings without having to go into my pocket. I consider them a supplementary tech to the phone. Not needed, but def awesome convenience.

Ps...TechNerd is bad now? I didn't get offended lol

Pss... you got me even after I folded lol.

Nice, one step closer to being able to cancel my Apple music subscription. Just need to be able to save playlists for offline listening so that I can run and I'll be all set.

Nope, thats where I looked first, ofcourse.

I can only imagine devs can set a bit to enable, and they are rolling out slowly?

I never said I didn't see people waer them. My point is there haven't penetrated the market to any discernible degree, and therefore I believe they are only now selling to the same relatively small number of people who have already bought one and are looking to upgrade.

It's simply too expensive vs the benefits.

You have to admit, it hasn't caught on in the public conciousness?

This is great. We need offline listening if possible and lower volume with the crown without raising wrist to wake up. Sometimes when it's busy in the bus or other Public places its a bit hard to lift up arm. It can be a small annoyance for us AirPods owners

Do you have anything to back this up or is this just your "feeling"?
