In the wake of recent question by highly regarded gaming journalist

where some views that the new Smash Bros Ultimate is considered enhanced port rather than sequel, it makes me question myself here. Does most games called sequel i played in the past is actually enhanced port?

For the comparison, i would use 1 title which i remember got hit with the question on whether they are sequel or enhanced port that is Smash Ultimate compared with other game from same genre.

Smash Bros 3ds/Wii U
No Story mode
Character total 58
Stage total 55
Music total 512
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Smash Bros Ultimate
New Story mode
Character total 70(not adding dlc)
Stage total 100+
Music total 800+
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Considering that even with all this improvement this game is not deemed to worthy of sequel tag. I tried comparing with other fighting games that we called sequel.

Street Fighter IV
New Story
Character total 44(Ultra Street Fighter)
Stage total 28
New and old music
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Street Fighter V
New Story
Character total 34 (atm)
Stage total 24
New and old music
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Tekken Tag Tournament 2
New Story
Character total 59
Stage total 29
New music
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Tekken 7
New Story
Character total 43
Stage total 22
New music
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Injustice
New Story
Character total 24 (6dlc)
Stage total 15
New music
New engine
New mechanic

Injustice 2
New Story
Character total 38(10 Dlc)
Stage total 12
New music
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
New Story
Character total 50(total after ultimate expansion)
Stage total 20
New music
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Marvel vs Capcom Infinity
New Story
Character total 33(with dlc)
Stage total 16
New music
New engine
New mechanic
New mode

Based on the comparison on the above, i found that it seems most fighting game so called sequel i have played is not worthy to be called as Sequels as it is build from the past or the content added sadly is not enough.

What does fellow Era thinks regarding this topic? Remember try be civil guys.

You're looking at it entirely the wrong way. A port is moving an existing game to a new system. Even if you had identical content, but you rebuilt it all, it would be a remake, not a port.

And it's clearly a sequel.

It's a re-iteration of a previous game in the vein of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo was for Super Street Fighter 2. It's not technically a sequel.

This is one of the most useless discussions to surge this year. Who cares about what people believe of Smash Ultimate? I think it's a heavily enhanced port, will it hinder my enjoyment of the game? Not at all, in fact it enhances it because they're offering me an insane package, which is even better considering I didn't play Smash Wii U that much. The game is going to sell millions anyway, so don't get to upset over this trivial detail, what matters is that come December 7th, I will be enjoying this enhanced port a lot and you will be enjoying this sequel a lot.
