For best performance...is there a rule that only english voice actors can be nominated?

I think that would be pretty sad
I don't imagine there's any rule but the list was determined by jurors. Expecting the gaming press to listen to all audio tracks to determine "Actually the Russian version of Arthur Morgan is pretty good" is completely unreasonable.

I doubt it's an official rule or anything but the TGAs, like The Oscars, are Western shows and, as such, focus primarily on Western interests. It's not sad it's just the way things are; the amount of bilingual people who would be able to adequately judge both Japanese and English performances (not to mention other languages) is too small for non-English nominations to ever be viable.

So art direction is best graphics award?
Throughout this gen, games only edge each other visually because of art direction so they go hand in hand. To have good graphics they have to have good art direction.

And this year specially art direction seems to have a big component of cinematography as well.

Imagine if the Academy Awards combined cinematography, visual effects, and production design into one category. That seems to be the case here with The Game Awards.

I'm honestly not sure what he was expecting.

The Game Awards are largely chosen by the major traditional Western press outlets.

Here's how they reviewed the biggest multiplayer games of this generation:
- Fortnite: 81
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4: 84
- Rainbow Six: Siege: 73
- PUBG: 86
- Rocket League: 85
- Overwatch: 91
- ARK: 70
- Battlefield 1: 89
- For Honor: 78
- Warframe: 71
- The Elder Scrolls Online: 71
- Destiny 2: 85
- The Division: 80

I don't get the impression there's an overflowing love of these titles among the voting base that would give them a shot of inclusion.

There are a couple exceptions, but it would likely take a lot of retirements (which, as most prominent journalists at traditional sites are 30-50, is like 15-20+ years from now), or a notable expansion of the voting base for that to change.

I feel like I can't really vote because I haven't played all the games in the category to really know which one is best.

I agree, but on the other hand, I always feel like best soundtrack is the most packed award. Almost every nominees could win it without another game being robbed. They are just all awesome. So yeah, I would vote OT, but what about Celeste, and the way it conveys Madeline's anxiety ? What about RDRII and the way the music is integrated into the world/environment ? (I haven't played RDRII, but I heard that it was great for that)

If you could finish DQXI and say that it was a rehash of previous games and had absolutely no merit as an interesting narrative then I don't know what to say either.

But this is the same forum where Octopath doesn't meaningfully connect the stories together because no one bothered to actually finish the game and see that that is flat-out untrue. So I don't know what I was expecting.
Mmmmmm I finished both games, and I don't think that the "text walls" that are presented before the real final boss in OT are enough to compensate for the lack of chemistry between the characters or the isolated feel of the stories.

And about DQ XI, I've only played VIII and XI, so more than a rehash from previous games (the main story is a rehash of any random old JPRG IMO), the good story arcs are a rehash of some child tales I used to read when I was a kid. It was not interesting for me at all tbh, some really good moments are in the game, sure, but I was bored most of my time with the stories.

Pretty much what I expected aside from Celeste and AC: Odyssey.

Not played Celeste myself but I'm not quite sure why so many underrate Ubi games. They make some truly exceptional games that always seem to get underrated because of who they're made by.

AC Odyssey fully deserves that nomination.

Yeah, and it's not like these sorts of biases don't exist in other awards shows. A multiplayer-only game has pretty much the same winds going against it that, say, a comedy does for winning an Oscar. Not impossible, but difficult, because the voters want to vote for the stuff that feels the most "serious".

Odyssey is like two good editing passes from being an all-time great. Reduce the prevalence of the mercenary stuff, cut a few cultists, maybe try to work some more story and character stuff into both of those systems, maybe drop 20% off every enemy's health bar, and you have something really special. So, I get why it's so divisive, between people who can see the core through all the bloat, and people who had their fun spoiled by a few too many things going on at once.

A lot of awesome competition this year, glad to see games like The Missing, Celeste, and Donut County getting represented here. Can't wait for the show; regardless of who wins, this definitely shows how strong of a year it's been for games.

You need to get on that then and play it. It's fantastic and it makes sense once you play through it in terms of why it's so revered by critics. I fucking loved the shit out of it

i think RDR2 got this easily, even though i think GoW and also MHW deserve it. it's hard as hell to go up against a Rockstar game though.

What is the cutoff date for games to be eligible this year?
Games eligible for The Game Awards this year must be available for public consumption on or before November 16, 2018. Titles that are released after this date will be eligible for The Game Awards ceremony in 2018. (Similarly, games that were released in December 2017 are eligible for this year's awards).
Looks like Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee simply didn't make the cut and won't have a chance to be nominated for next year's awards. I'm sure plenty here will be happy about that.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 didn't make the cut either, it seems.

I'm pulling for Celeste, but I don't think it will win.

Also nice to see Octopath get nods for best RPG and soundtrack.

why not call it best english performance? I think it is strange to call it something if you limit it to a certain region.

and no, the oscars have plenty of nominees for foreign performances....bad example on your part. I don´t even know why it would be so hard to get a list of people who are convincing in their performance. Listen to certain communities...the cream always rises to the top. It is pretty boring to see the same names year in and year out (imo).

I also dislike the constant absent of the fgc in the best esports categories.

Damn I should finish Red Dead.
So far my only sure lock in this list is C Judge for best performance with Kratos. Also super happy that Detroit is nominated as it's one of my favs of the year!

Publicly available date cutoff. I imagine the jury outlets have received review copies of this week's games.

Good to know. Can you get me an edit on my avatar like your game of the year tag on this picture?

I think people understand what it means. Nobody's going to expect a Western show watched by Western people in English to feature performances by people of other languages.

What? No they don't. They have a Best Foreign Film category but they don't have "Best Non-English-Speaking Actor" and "Best Non-English Speaking Actress" awards. Also it's really not a good for an award show trying to be as fair as possible to rely on "certain communities" for any of their awards. Sticking to performances that every single judge can adequately, well, judge is how it should be done.

Pretty expected. I'm torn between RDR2 and GoW for goty. Celeste being up their is a bit of a shock. I didn't know the buzz for the game was THAT good.
