so I'm in Austin for the next two days with lots of free time and need some suggestions.

Hoping for some outdoor, night life and food suggestions mostly.

Check out Hopdoddy for food, it's a burger place, it's quite good. More are going up across Texas as well.

6th street is okay, you can do much better for night life unless you really want to go to 6th street.

You want to get food here you can't get elsewhere. So when people suggest hamburgers or other American food, I'd say you should skip that. Yeah, we have fine hamburger places, but so does just about every city in the country. Austin's unique foods are BBQ and Tex-Mex. I'd say you should go for those.

Tex-Mex: My favorite is Matt's El Rancho. They've got an amazing Steak Tampiquena that's one of the best steaks in the city (and without the steakhouse upcharge you'd have to pay). The Bob Armstrong dip is also amazing. Of course, their standard entrees are also fantastic. I also recommend the Knockout Martini.

BBQ: Franklin's BBQ is definitely the best. You'll need to stand in line early, but it's really cold right now so the line will be shorter (only 1-2 hours) on a weekday. La Barbecue is an alternative that is quite good as well - it still has a wait though. If you want to skip the wait, Terry Black's BBQ is by far the best. It's delicious and can't be beat except by the two mentioned above.

For things to do, most of it is outdoors and unfortunately it's quite cold. If you don't mind that, you can rent a kayak on Lady Bird Lake, which is right next to downtown and pretty fun. There's also some alright hiking locations nearby, though you shouldn't expect national park quality or anything. Perdenales Falls and McKinney Falls are probably the highlights.

What you shouldn't do is go to the Alamo Drafthouse, which some people might suggest. It's expensive, extremely mediocre and not much better as a theater experience than anything else.

2. Go see the The Spazmatics perform

Everything else is tertiary

Not to derail but do you live under a rock? Do you really believe the words you just typed? Go back and reread your post? You think you can only get Tex-Mex and BBQ in Austin?

Don't know about going outside, this is the coldest it's been since I moved here. Can't imagine doing any outdoor event where I wouldn't be miserable.

No, obviously not. No city has anything you can't get in most cities. But Texas BBQ and Tex-Mex are found primarily in Texas, so he should probably have those. I'm assuming he's not out of state of course.

But sure, have him go to Hopdoddy, a chain restaurant that makes burgers similar to what you'd find in literally every other major city in the country, and probably across Canada, Europe and Australia as well. What a thrilling experience that'll be.

I was in Austin over the summer and had a greatime.

For BBQ I would recommend Iron Works BBQ, and to get their beef ribs. Was incredible, affordable and I didn't have to wait in line.

If you're not from the south, check out Whataburger as its by far one of the best chain burger places ever.

I went and saw the bat bridge. That was kinda neat.

Went to Austin for my bachelor's party, we were all about the food.

Here are my recommendations:
You must try Austin BBQ! If you can't get to Franklin's in time, La Barbeque is (imho) just as good and cheaper. You should definitely get a beef rib.
Gordoughs unique donut menu. The food truck closed down but their public house seems to have most of the same items.
Kurry Takos a little food truck place that has Indian-Mexican fusion food. Fucking. Delicious.
Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken spicy fried chicken, good pricing, fresh food, quick service.
T-Loc's Sonora Hot Dogs It's unlike any hot dog you've tried, and it was one of the highlights of my time in Austin.

lol we stopped by the food truck sober, what's supposed to happen?

Oh the food truck was apparently different. I never had it. The Public House's food is greasy to an extreme and doesn't taste good. If you're drunk, you can't tell and the awesomeness of having donuts in all of your food ensures you can have fun. I'm sure they exist, but I don't know anyone who likes the Public House sober beyond "it was fine."

Their original truck on S 1st is still open.

As a meat/cheese/bun kind of person, Hopdoddy's has to be one of the most disappointing burger joints I've been to.

I have a very poorly updated thread for recs. But yeah, La BBQ is the place to go for BBQ. Valentina's is also great, and a lot shorter wait.

And have a Mexican martini, since I'm spoiled and they apparently don't exist anywhere else.

I did the same thing last year. For a short trip Franklin's isn't worth the wait, do La Barbeque, no hype, extremely good. Great beer selection at the store as well.

For hanging out start on the nice and mature side of 6th street, great venues with live music and DJs, beer. There is a lot with a bunch of food trucks. Keep drinking and end up at the "dirty" part of 6th street just to watch the revelry. Pick up a girl (or two!) if you are into that sort of thing.

Austin is fun!

Ah I see, if that's the case then OP probably shouldn't go to the Public House.

Their original truck on S 1st is still open.

Thanks for the info, didn't know this was the case. Go to this one instead, OP!

As a big burger guy myself, I think Hopdoddy's is one of the most overrated chains in Texas. Everybody raves about the food and shakes and, for me, they've never been anything more than above-average. I think it's especially offensive considering how expensive everything. We had two Hopdoddy's open up here in Oklahoma and everybody freaked out and, like clockwork, people are realizing that it's not as great as others make it out to be.

Did Rainey St. last night which was fun. Caught a great jazz trio.

Walked down south Congress St. today which I enjoyed and then I stopped by the Mondo gallery and picked up some vinyl.

Sitting at Lazarus brewing right now and gonna hit up la BBQ after.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

Dang. I must have missed the memo.

At a spazmatics show now. They're fantastic

Every BBQ territory has their specialty and in Texas it is Brisket.

I like La Barbacue but Franklin's is the best if you can wait for it.

Pulvos and Matt's El Rancho are both great mexican choices in my opinion.

I reccomend the Elephant Room a lot for people in the nighlife side. Its a Jazz club downtown.

I googled Jazz club Austin and this came up.

Good reviews on Yelp, too.
