Im so mad at my little nephew right now.

We are both arguing about this picture. He is saying nazism should be allowed to have a "real democracy" and not a "emotional democracy". He does not agree with the actions of a nazi tho.

.....

I am afraid hes lost :(

(For clarification sake we are both minorities (brown))

Nazis don't want brown people to exist. Does he really want to not exist to give the appearance of civility?

Trumps America. You let this shit fester on YouTube and twitter and this is what we get. We have been degenerating rapidly for the past 2 years. There is no room for fascist ideologies.

What a despicable bunch, except that kid on the upper right. Racist, bullying, the whole package.

Well shit, I used that just yesterday at a restaurant when my server asked how things were and I gave the gesture while my mouth was full thinking to myself "Everything's A-OK!" I hope they were as out of touch as I am :-\

Sucks so bad we have to worry about stuff like this because shitheads are cooping a very common hand gesture, WTF.

He's a retired teacher who bought an expensive DSLR and thought that made him a pro photographer. Looks like he specializes in motorcycle photography (and standing subjects in direct sunlight never asking himself why they're always squinting.)

The kid in the top right is genuine. There was a more detailed story on the local WI news stations: https://fox6now.com/2018/11/12/baraboo-school-district-investigates-boys-apparent-nazi-salute/

Jordan Blue said he felt uncomfortable and did not do the salute.

"The photographer told us to raise our hand in a way, and I knew at that point that some of my classmates are immature, so I didn't want to do that, and I saw what was happening and felt so upset. If I knew that's what was going to happen, I would not have gone up there, because I do not believe in that kind of disrespect and I do not believe that represents my community or myself in the photo that way," said Blue.

Baraboo High School students said they talked about the post in class.

"It doesn't really represent Baraboo High School. It's just a poor choice some people made," one student said.

"I think it's alarming, and I know it happened in May. It is absolutely part of an uptick in anti-Semitism," said Elana Kahn, Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

I went to a HS in Georgia that was probably ~45% white ~45% black and ~10% a mix of other ethnicities.

I remember in my Junior year a new girl arrive from Wisconsin and told me that before moving to Georgia she hadn't seen a black person in person in her life...

As someone from Georgia who witnessed plenty of racism (including from many of my own relatives) the idea of a state full of racist white people who don't even have the opportunity to engage with other races on a regular basis scared the shit out of me.

It's just a poor choice 30 people made all at once with glee.

Seems legit.

What else do you expect a high school student to say? When you're that age, you're optimistic about the people around you.

If you want to see the double edged sword that is segregation, Wisconsin is a great example. Meeting Wisconsinites made me realize how hopeless the "race problem" is and how fatal homogeneously White areas are to progress. They believe so much propaganda about people they barely even seen in person.

So from his LinkedIn, the photographer has to be well into his 60s (BA from UW-Whitewater in 1974,) but says in this article that one of the kids is his son. And I thought I was an old-ass dad for having a kid at 39.

The article is a must read for his excuse... "All right boys, you're on the steps. … give me a high sign, a wave that you're saying goodbye to your parents."

Other students have commented that the school is rife with casual racism. Should I ignore that to pretend like they're not copping pleas?

Look, I'm not going to explain to you that different people process events differently. You are the one who took issue with the article. You can deal with it as you wish.

I can't imagine this many people could be this stupid. Peer pressure is a hell of a drug. Throw them all in the proverbial meat grinder now and get them some better influences.

Time to drop all these kids at 2 AM on a Saturday night on a random street corner in Milwaukee - not because anything actually bad would happen to them, but because it'd scare the crap out of them.

We did this in high school with a guy who wouldn't stop spouting racist shit during a 49ers game.

We kicked him out on the corner of 3rd and Oakdale (Hunters Point) after the game that evening. Apparently we refused to let him back which led to tears, he ran full stop down Oakdale until he made it to Bayshore to call his father.

I lost the ability to park at school because his father made a complaint.

Hunter's Point back in the day, would surprise a lot of people who think San Francisco is all Pacific Heights and cool gay bars. Don't know how badly two or three cycles of silicon valley money has changed it or squeezed residents out. Btw Hunter's Point also has the best weather in San Francisco.

Good lord its bizarre that someone would think this ok in 2018.

That photographer should never be around kids again.

As for the kids themselves, hopefully it's not too late for them to get their shit right. Hoping for their lives to be ruined seems a bit much for me.

I went to college in Madison, the more liberal part of the state. The year I went was right after they got in trouble for photoshopping a black guy into various photos in their brochures in a misguided attempt to promote diversity. They kept using the same guy!!

It was also a very segregated city. You had to drive out to get to where the black communities were and you just didn't see a lot of black people doing...I don't know the right way to put it...normal shit? It was honestly not something that really stuck out to me until I flew back home (Maryland) and landed in DC. I got off the plane and there, as expected, were black people everywhere just doing....normal shit. Living their lives, doing many of the jobs around the airport, catching their flights. And the contrast hit me so hard I'll honestly never forget that feeling.

Sorry if that story comes off weird. I like Wisconsin but it's got issues.

Ask him what thinks Will happen if nazis actually do take power someday. Ask him why he thinks hate needs to have a Seat at the table when all their ideals have been disproven scientifically. Ask him why he thinks there is value in a ideology that can only be defined by destroying others and how something like that can ever be considered moral.

Show him pictures of auswitz, any camp you can find. Testimonials of surviving jews, Brown people. You guys are so far away from everything, but there is something relating to WwII around every corner here.

This was my uncle and Aunt. They lived in the High Desert in California (grandpa worked at an isolated pot ash factory). They didn't see a black person until they rode in a taxi in LA when they were around eight (late 1950s). They asked him if he looked like that because he didn't take a bath. My grandma freaked out and the guy laughed and explained that some people are different colors. Neither are racist.

Fuck these kids though. They knew what they were doing.

I'm sorry, can you point out the black power symbols amongst the sea of nazi salutes, I must have missed them.....

FFS! The length some of you will go to muddy the waters or excuse clear racism.

If you read any of my statements you see I'm doing the exact opposite. So excuse me while I scoff at your inability to look at a picture and see more than just what you want to see before calling somebody out. That's fucking bullshit, and I do not appreciate even a subtle questioning of my integrity, let alone this.

Seriously not cool.

And don't see BLACK POWER and BOTH SIDES are just displaying your inability to see beyond what you want to see!

Get out of here with the false equivalency bullshit dude. I said them thinking casual racism was funny, if they even deserve the benefit of the doubt (not convinced they do anymore), should still negatively impact their life so they learn a lesson to take it more seriously. Heaven forbid that I also mention the several white dudes making black power gestures as an emphasis on my point in how disrespectful, ignorant and sad this photo is.

Oh, but feel free to continue the disingenuous remarks. I'm not having any of it.

Yes, yes, continuous racist & severe bullying is just trolling too, eh?

Somebody pointed out earlier in the thread the reports of bullying and everything, and I said "oh I hadn't read the previous stuff, that's fucked up."

Like, this is the problem with trying to have a discussion on the Internet. Somebody condemning these kids gets called out because a poster or two want so desperately to jump on people they think are defending something that upsets them that context, reading comprehension, basic common sense get thrown out the window. And it starts a snowball effect where other people don't want to put the little bit of effort it takes to understand what was said - they just see somebody being called out for "defending" something immoral - and they continue the dogpile.

At that point the less reasonable posters are gonna try to twist the words or intentions of that person because it's easier to do that than admit you fucked up calling that person out.

I don't post a ton on Off Topic, but I have a 100% track record of calling out, often with strong words, Trump and everybody in his administration. Like, there is no ambivalence to what I meant earlier and there should be none given my post history.

Some of you need to not be so quick to try to jump on others. This is ridiculous.
