This is the most sinister shit. You're a complete captive audience. The advertisements are LOUD and can't be muted. I'm sure some prick got filfty rich off of this and it's awful.

Fucking agreed. Pop up ads irl that can't be disabled or blocked.

I considered printing stickers to put on the screens but then how would you know when to enter zip code or other info?

Hate it.

The first time I was exposed to one I was filling up the 5-gallon gas container for my lawnmower, so I was bent over by the gas pump and the ad started playing REALLY LOUD about six inches from my ear.

You haven't learned to tune out advertising completely yet, OP? Not seeing why this is a big deal or even "sinister"

The mute button still works on some machines, guess it just depends.

Shout out to the people that get a sharpie and write "mute" next to the right button.

I know only 1 gas station near me that does this and it's the sole reason I never return to it. Rather go another block than hear ads blasted at me.

Eh, I don't care as long as it doesn't get in the way of what I'm trying to do. If I had to wait for the ad to finish before pumping gas or paying, that would suck

Check your tire pressure while the gas is pumping. Unless you live in a state that doesn't allow those locks to keep the gas pump engaged without you having to hold the lever.

its especially great at speedway stations where they have a tv commercial playing alongside the radio. and no mute buttons for either.

It was jarring the first time, but I barely notice them now. One told me the weather and what the number 1 movie at the box office was. * Shrug *

Sucks if you got a big tank to fill I guess.

I just find them sad. Those poor little monitors looping the same garbage all day. Whatever hardware powering them barely managing to maintain a stable framerate on a standard-definition video.

Living in Canada, the true evil are the pumps that remove the tab in the handle that lets it pump by itself so you can jump back in your warm car.

I don't mind when it's telling the weather, but yeah it's annoying. I carry headphones with me everywhere, so that helps some. Thankfully I don't get gas normally at places with them.

One of my local petrol stations has these things, but they seem to break down easily. I always see them playing without audio, turned off or even bluescreened.
But all they seem to do is show the weather, play a short news clip and a trailer for a new release.

Guys. GUYS.

Why don't we patent putting these ad screens

At the urinal.

Guaranteed captive audience for 30 seconds. We'll be filthy rich

PSA - If you choose to sit in your car to avoid them, know this: Gas fumes are very flammable. Sitting in your car tends to create a static charge build-up. make sure you touch a grounded piece of metal (such as the gas pump) before putting your hand anywhere near the gas tank/pump handle. Literally hundreds of people every year suffer burn wounds from not grounding themselves before reaching near the pump handle and creating a spark.

New Jersey proves its superiority yet again

As an Oregonian, I'd rather put up with ads and be able to pump my own gas than to have to wait for an overworked attendant to help me while he helps 10 other people at the same time. Sadly, I don't get a choice since our legislature thinks we're too stupid to do it ourselves.

In the UK they don't have sound, apart from when you put the pump back and it says, "You have refueled at pump number..."

How could you have sound on them? What if there is someone at each pump? Would it not just be a noisy mess?

I'd go to a different petrol station.

It's especially irritating when they're all "we are the #1 station at gas pumps in the country." Like I wanted to see that bullshit and wouldn't just turn it off if I had the chance.

Every single one I've seen can be muted by pressing the button on the right second from the top, even if it's not labeled.

All the ones I've seen have those buttons though

I tried that but coincidentally it was also the only button that will cancel the transaction.

Man that's insidious.

Been to gas stations from Florida to California and all of em are mutable so far. I count myself lucky.

Someone hugged me when they saw me mute the screen while they were pumping next to me and asked me to show them.

Lol, you plebs enjoy your forced advertising while you stand around in the cold like a chump. Meanwhile, in the great state of Oregon, we get to sit our comfy cars while a pump attendant does all the work.
