Unfortunately, XBO's BC is not the best example. It's not working without mandatory cloud download of the corresponding "optimized" game image from MS servers.
It's not like you can just put X360 disc and play (you can store all your downloaded versions though)

No,but why would I want that when i am 100% Digital.
I just want the game to stay in my library so I can play on whatever Xbox console I will own next. No hassle with keeping disks everywhere. Just download and play.

User Warned: “Lazy Devs” Rhetoric. Please review our FAQ.
People defending these practices need to chill out.
Developers are lazy, consumers with their acceptance are making them even lazier and are sending them the wrong message.
Capcom were forced to change their DLC on disc fuckery when they were discovered.
People need to understand that videogames fans are from all over the world not just from cities with lighting speed internet speeds.

My 40GB data cap with 2MBit speed cannot handle all these lazy partches (fiberoptics are coming to my neihborhood but it will take time).

I'm guessing they did this because they couldn't get the game to pass certification in time for manufacturing because it still had major bugs, so they opted to ship an empty shell to manufacturing so they'd have more time to finish the game for the day-one patch instead.

Fortunately there's a product for people who don't have internet connections.

what's the cost difference between having the data on the disc vs forcing consumers to download large portions of the games?
are there any other considerations aside from cost?

What i would like to know is when your console is offline and you start the game physical what is actually included

So is this basically being done underhanded by publishers to pretty much fuck over game preservation?

Printing discs is quite cheap, why didn't they make this a multi disc release. Even Capcom managed to do that, with MegaManX Collection.

Additional discs = Pay for an additional disc. Increased shipping costs. Increased authoring costs etc.

Or people can just download part of the game since physical is nothing more than a boot disc at this point anyway.

It pretty clearly has little (or nothing) to do with not wanting to ship on two discs. Game likely just came in very hot.

The way the Xbox handles updates is different from PS4. If the updates contain newer data to replace that on disc, the system will not copy it. It will just download the update data. The only way to know how much data is actually on the disc for Xbox is to install offline.

I don't understand this. Why bother shipping it in this state? How hard can it be to put three fucking Spyro games on a disc?
Do they not want people to buy physical? In that case why bother with a physical release in the first place?

I know they want an all digital future. Maybe the way they want to realize an all digital future is not by stopping with discs from one day to another, but by doing shit like this.
That way people will slowly but surely start to loathe them and switch to the digital alternative and not feel forced by the publisher, but feel like it's their own idea.

I just want a fucking disc with the game on it. I get it if there's security updates/patches for glitches/DLC that need downloading, but at least put the damn BASE game on the disc. Christ.

What is even the point? You have to use a whole Blu-Ray disc anyway, might as well fill the damn thing with the entire game.

Probably not a space issue, there were probably bugs and kinks they needed to work out in the last two games, and didn't want to put them on the disc like that.

What's this, now? Common sense? Get outta here with that nonsense! Day 1 patches for everybody!
Lol. A day one patch isn't even mutually exclusive with this idea though, better to have a buggy game on disc and then release a day one patch to fix it rather than just...not having the game files on the disc at all. Most games are still playable without a day one patch.

I vehemently agree:
Are discs just a formality at this point? Seems like there is so much downloading going on, I'm starting to doubt if there's even anything on the discs.
But this makes me think that the game was so buggy that they needed the extra time to finish the game and upload it to the respective storefronts.

This is, assuming that you can upload a game to a digital storefront much later than you can print and ship a disc.

Also, it's very unpractical – they wasted resources/energy on plastic (for packaging) and Blu-ray, but still additional energy will be needed for "server farms".

Could it be because of the Switch version ? To have the same install process on all versions in order to simplify development ?

This is so ridiculous. Seriously.

I'm interested and yet I won't buy because this is so, so lame.

You know, just make it a solely digital release at that point. At least it's honest.

yeah, i'm wondering if the game case mentions the fact that the games themselves aren't actually playable without an internet connection & massive download :) ...

They can backup their games on 2 or 3 HD's to be safe. Not ideal, but not total loss either
Oh I know, but I was speaking more to their point of hoping for continued availability on future platforms, or hoping for indefinite availability, or hoping for compensation when neither of those happens. We already have precedence from two of the big 3 on how any of that is likely to go down.

Even if it does, not everyone is going to pay attention. Parents shopping for Christmas who don't know or care about the vidya games for example

Activision gave up on pressing discs that work offline. Black ops 4 also only comes with an installer, and downloads the rest.

This is definitely not a decision made by the developer

I mean, physical is still cheaper and you can sell the game later to recoup some of the cost. Nice try Activision, but digital is still inferior, no matter how hard you try to push it.
