Yes, you can see the outlines of the blocks and home lots

Yeah and the forests a long with it, it is a path of destruction.

Thanks, I figured it might be but I wasn't sure.

Really hope they can get a lot of this under control. With the Santa Ana winds coming back tomorrow this is highly likely to get so much worse than it already is. :(

My aunt is missing.. Uncle and mom are a mess. I hope we hear from her soon. And everybody else who is missing.

Hope you hear from her soon and that she is okay. Couldn't imagine what that would be like.

Someone made a street map overlay:

This is Magalia. There's nothing left. That area just right of the red road used to be two schools.

I saw the video. I'm not disturbed by it as I think its informative of the dangers of wildfires. It's clear from that video alone that the casualties are way higher than 9.

Hope for the best for all that have loved ones out of reach.

Damn, I hope you hear good news from her soon.
I hope she (and everyone else) turn up alright.
Thank you all for the kind words. I hope every single person who is missing turns out ok. It feels real when it hits home.
I'm very sorry to hear that, Surfinn. I hope your aunt is okay.
Thanks a lot. You're a good man Einchy

Yeah, that video is fucked y'all. I can't stop you from looking at it, but steel yourself if you're gonna do that

I'm assuming he got out of his car on fire and collapsed on the ground.

Probably not on fire in his car. It's almost always the smoke and lack of oxygen. You just can't get enough actual oxygen if you're that close to such a large fire. It's burning it all up, and so while you think you're "breathing" you're just inhaling a bunch of things that aren't oxygen.

Wait, 80 football fields per minute?? Are they claiming the fire moved 80x100 (8 thousand yards) in 1 minute?

Was that a typo?

I had the same question. I usually hear that fires can spread faster than you think but if that's true then wow, that's hard to even imagine.

It has to be an area calculation. If it was a straight line, you couldn't outrun it at that speed even if you were in a Ferrari. Still, it's pretty quick.

Had a lot of fun up at Chico State and the town of Chico and Black Butte Lake last year for a competitive event, maps seem to show Paradise is to the east of Chico? I read that the campus shut down, I can imagine the air quality is really bad up there, it's definitely unavoidably bad here in Sacramento.

Shit, this is just devastating to hear. 23 dead and loads of people missing. Not to mention loads of homes destroyed. This has me especially worried since my cousins live near that area.

One of my cousins (who is an EMT) helped out over there as well. I just hope the death toll doesn't go much higher and everyone is safe.

"A wildfire is hopscotching across a northern California county at a rate of roughly 80 football fields per minute"

Holy crap that is scary. What an absolutely heartbreaking tragedy.

The only comfort I can think of is that is likely a better way to go then burning alive.

I'm in plumas lake .Hope elwe don't have to evacuate but I won't be surprised if we do.

I've got a cousin that's in the process of selling his place in Plumas, and our cousins south of Oroville evacuated on Wednesday.

My aunt lived with my uncle in Paradise when he came back from Vietnam. She still owned their cabin there and is sad to report she lost friends in that fire.

Apparently the fire has jumped containment lines at doe mill road and is heading to forest ranch and hwy 32 per KRCR TV

Crazy to see what the wind may do to exacerbate this today.

So I got to thinking, people in tornado areas have tornado shelters underground, is there any kind of equivalent to that for fire areas?

Like some sort of underground thing that can be sealed off and used in an emergency when escape is impossible?

Seems like you could wait in there for a couple hours until the fire goes through the area.

Wow the confirmed death toll almost tripled since I last checked in. I knew there were bodies still unaccounted for but damn thats awful

Personal fire shelters exist but they aren't really any equivalent to a storm cellar. I don't think they contain enough oxygen to last an hour

I'm in Arkansas and my wife wouldn't move here without our in the floor garage shelter.

To survive fire you would have to be able to seel yourself off from all outside air while still being able to maintain an oxygen supply inside. Not to mention insulation to protect you from extreme heat.

My inground shelter was $5k installed. I think some described as above would cost a lot more.

Is the fire still going on, it seems so weird that the PCAs which are in LA are going on, while like a solid amount of the people at this award show just lost their house
