How many moons do I need to unlock the ruined kingdom?

I've exceeded the number of moons that I was told were needed to power up the odyssey but the kingdom hasn't opened up on the map.

I have 140 moons, should this be enough? Do un-completed story missions prevent progress?

Just a tip that worked with me about jump rope challenge. I switched to undocked mode and was able to complete the challenge with just a few tries with headphones. The tick sound was more recognizable and there was no TV input lag(mine is a bit high).

Thanks, will try that. Is the 'tick' sound the cue to jump or is it the 'hey'?

Got 999 moons, did the little extra thing at the end... why that's not moon 1000 seems like a missed opportunity. :) Still a fantastic game that I hope they iterate on with a sequel this gen.

Finished it today. As in beating the boss of the main story. I have 0 interest in getting all moons. I just got the unlock for 250. What other unlocks are there?

Overall I'd call it a 9.5/10. Fantastic game.

Are you guys getting to 999 by just buying moons? I thought there were only 820 "natural" moons.
880 I think.

Not sure if I'll go for that or not, but I don't plan to grind money to buy moons for 999. I'll probably do all the main moons in each level and pick at the achievement moons until Xenoblade gets here, then I'll be done.

Torkdrift Battle legit sounds like something out of Half-Life 2, lol.

Just did the dark side of the moon, but I'm going back to the beginning and do the "Box" moons in all the worlds and 100% them before going to the Darker side.

Its going to be a long ride.

I thought it would be super hard initially too but it turned out to be alright. If you have trouble timing bounds, I think just mash the button and you'll hit it most times. Also on the part where you bounce in a zigzag, stay close to the middle to make it quick short bounds. The other racers seem to blast ahead the first two laps but then have a poor third one.

Yeah, I did this last night - took maybe 7-8 attempts. I finished in 2nd by a hair twice, but finally got 1st.

I would say that the key to me is to try and stay low with your bounds; bound off things that will shoot you forward and low, not high. You're better off not even bounding if you are going to hit an incline that is going to do that. Good advice on the zigzag, and I'd say on that last turn stay low - you risk hitting the snow, but I seem to pass the other racers a lot there. And yes, the other racers start fast and have a bad last lap. So if you are in 3rd going into the last lap you are in good position to win, and you can pull it off from 4th - the pass to first though will probably not come until that last turn.

40-45 is accurate for 100%.

I would guess that is close to accurate if you mostly just go about your business of collecting moons. I've spent a lot of time tech jumping in kingdoms, trying to pull off impossible jumps or just messing around (and countless attempts at trying to pull of jump rope and volleyball legit). I'm at 650+ moons and just passed 50 hours. I'm betting it will end up being 70-80 hours for me for 100%.

Making progress on my way to do a Painting Jump run. Up to the final boss. Once I beat him I'll be free to plot out my route through the world. Looking forward to figuring out what paintings lead where.

I cheesed Darker Side with a Peach amiibo. I'm not ashamed.

Though I will go back and try to finish it legitimately when I get the free time.

For a single run for me, not 100% completion but def not speedrunning either by any means somewhere between 15-20 hrs. That was focusing on story progression and a decent amount of exploration too. My guess at 100% might be somewhere around 40 hrs?

Sounds about right. IIRC my Switch "Activity Log" said "Over 15 Hours" when I reached the end credits and "Over 45 Hours" when I hit all 880 moons.

I forget the exact order the paintings go but most speedrun categories that aren't any% are able to jump through most of the paintings to stock up on moons and visit almost every Kingdom before depositing them to the Odyssey because that is faster than having to use the Odyssey every time.

Aren't the painting warps random? I feel like this might not even be possible for some people.

Not that I know of. I heard the only thing that will change are paintings affected by which kingdoms you pick first on branching paths.

I'm just doing it for fun to see how many Moons I can put in all at once. I won't even 100% it like my other save anyway. I only made one different first choice in branching paths this time.

I just have to remember where the painting is in every level and choose my starting point.

For the 500 moon level, did anyone else find DK 2D section to be really annoying in how it controlled? Were the other 2d levels that had perspective changes camera relative? It felt odd pushing up to make Mario move left.
Yes, I think they definitely got something wrong there. Controls weren't intuitive like they are throughout most of the game. Maybe the camera should have auto turned or something. I managed to scramble through, since I had health still.

I just got the game yesterday, and of course it's great. I am really disappointed in the motion control stuff though. When I read about it before I thought it only affected really advanced moves, but there's a lot of basic stuff that you can't really do handheld unless you swing your whole switch around. I play my Switch almost exclusively handheld so I feel like I'm missing out on part of the game.

Agreed with your point...but seriously try giving split joycon a try. It's sooo nice. I've fallen asleep playing a few times due to how comfortable it allows me to play.

You're really not missing out on much. I played the game extensively both docked and hand held and there's really not a big difference to the experience.

Most of the motion controls just allow you to do stuff like roll faster, throw further, jump higher, etc. Little boosts like that. Not needed at all, they're just little boosts.

Also FYI, in case you didn't know, it's possible to do spinning cap without motion. Just spin Mario and then throw your cap. It's also possible to do ground throw without motion. Just ground pound and then throw your cap.

Yeah I figured out the spin thing, it's just not very precise to do it that way I find. But it's good to know I won't miss out on that much overall.

I legit think these second picture match moons might be the hardest ones in the game without cheating.

At least on the first ones you could use the details to help place the stuff, but for the second ones I was using the blocks that make up the floor to try to give myself coordinates, but the huge side blocks make that difficult too.

So after purchasing the final costume...what's my incentive to get the remaining moons? Because there's still a lot them left.
It's just a little extra that may or may not be worth your time. I just got 999 moons and enjoyed the reward but it's relatively minor. The only things I have remaining are capture #41 and the S Cup in the Snow Kingdom. I still have no idea how I'll ever do the latter.

Edit: The best time I've gotten is 1:56. What time should I be shooting for?

Second Edit: Finishing under 2:00 is VERY difficult.

Third Edit: FINALLY beat it at 1:51 and some change. I'm glad I never have to do that again.

So, if you guys had to choose, what do you think is the main theme of this game: Jump Up, Superstar! or Cascade Kingdom's theme?

With how it's incorporated in jingles, cutscenes and such; it's clear that the motif used in the Cascade Kingdom music is supposed to be the main theme, but it doesn't really feel like a significant piece that has much of a tie to the game's identity. Jump Up Super Star is definitely the main piece of music popularly associated with the game, and I'd expect it to continue to be 'the' Odyssey song going forward.

So I collected every moon expect the very final one. I don't have the strength to start with this now, better give it a go tomorrow. Should I expect something crazy difficult? I was super happy when I managed to beat champions road in SMW3D after a few hours of trying, so let's see how can this one compare.

I was kinda disappointed in the game's difficulty though, even dark side was pretty easy. Maybe the final moon will get on my nerves, but so far this feels like it was much easier than maybe all 3D Mario games so far (although 64 is also kinda easy).

Each challenge taken individually would not necessarily be easy, but it won't be difficult either. However, the game throws at you several challenges that you have to complete in a row, so it's pretty challenging, but not to the extent of Super Mario 3D World since you can find Health pickups on the way (provided you search for them). There is only one segment that I would consider difficult, but after passing that segment, it's relatively smooth-sailing from there.

Overall, I would say that it's decently challenging, and if you know the trick behind each segment they wouldn't feel tough.

So, if you guys had to choose, what do you think is the main theme of this game: Jump Up, Superstar! or Cascade Kingdom's theme?

Ever since this game was first revealed, I thought Fossil Fall's theme is the main theme since it's used when this game was revealed, and is also used as the Credit's theme (when was the last time a game's reveal trailer used its Credits theme as the music of choice?).

Within the game itself, it's no doubt the Jump Up, Superstar!, because it has more support for it: the title screen music, a lengthy and grandiose segment playing this song, an easter egg that plays this theme, and more important: the lyrics are found in the physical cover of this game. Besides, vocal tracks are the most standout themes in any game that they are found, and this is Mario's first vocal theme.

Thank you for reading.

Playing through the game and I'm at New Donk City right now. It's an amazing game and I absolutely love it.

Seriously, fuck this jump rope game. Does anyone have any tips? I've tried every trick I can think of. I jump after she says hey but I mess up. I can't get the glitch to work. I tried jumping with the scooter but I can't position it correctly and always mess up. When I do position it correctly, I mess up somewhere.

Shouldn't there be 880 moons excluding the money grind ones? I have 877 with every kingdom at 100% except beating Darker Side, which only has one moon?

I can only assume the last two are from getting all the hats + clothes but they aren't indicated anywhere. Still have one hat and two clothes left and I doubt I'll grind the money for those, and certainly not for the other 119 moons.

Ugh, I'm trying to jump based on heys but the lady who says faster messes me up. She prevents me from hearing the lady who says hey. I'm not skilled enough to jump until she stops going faster.

I found dark side to be much, much harder than darker side. Darker side isn't THAT hard, it's just a marathon of decently challenging stuff. It probably took me longer to beat darker side than dark side, but no individual part of it was anywhere near as challenging as some of the dark side stuff and especially not compared to the S cup in Snow Kingdom.

When I do the talkatoo glitch for the moon, my camera freezes. I can still move Mario around, but not the camera. Any ideas on how to fix this? Or did the glitch already get patched?

Still found the hardest and most frustrating moons to be the post-game picture matches.

I didn't have a lot of trouble with the jump rope one. It was one of the easier minigame ones IMO, volleyball and especially that second snow race S-cup were much harder.

So how hard is this jump rope glitch supposed to be to trigger? I've been trying for a bit and nothing is happening. I'm worried it's been patched out.

Edit: I found a better explanation that didn't skip some steps, and it worked! Huzzah!
