Wario Ware Gold wouldn't have worked on Switch. It uses a lot of 3DS features like the microphone and two screens.

I know, but I'd have taken a collection of the older simple Wario Ware games that just require a single button press or limited movements like we enjoyed on the DS or Gamecube.

But like Ridley327 pointed out, there could be a lot of great ways to use the joycons in a Wario Ware game so maybe it's best to wait and see if they gives us a Switch title one day.

Every time I see this "drought" shit, I really get to wondering what sort of free time ya'll have. I don't care how many consoles you own; it's 2018 and we are perpetually saturated with content. If this is a drought, I dread the rain.

Also, I think my new favorite phrase on Resetera is "doesn't count." Arbitrary as fuck.

It's definitely not what I envisioned, and its been a little disappointing. All for the big AAA games, but I was under the impression that many of the smaller 2d games would by default be coming to the Switch. Hell the fact Phoenix Wright is just now showing up is strange to me. Where's a 2D Zelda? Mario and Luigi RPG ? Etrian Odyssey?

also something most people are ignoring is the really good dlc some exclusive titles got this year.
octo expansion for splatoon 2
donkey kong adventure for mario+rabbids
torna for xenoblade 2
Octo Expansion is hands down the best Splatoon single player

I think that's just the way the development pipeline lined up. It appears as though Nintendo has a lot of games coming and 2019 looks to be stacked with SW.

I thought their Switch ports of WiiU games were extremely helpful at filling in the gaps. I don't think there was a drought in terms of releases from Nintendo on the Switch.

It seems we haven't seen a lot of the teams within the new Nintendo R&D structure, release actual games yet.

I lived through the Wii droughts of '06 and '07. Back when we were so starved we'd get excited for the occasional SNES rereleases. This is no drought. The Switch indie scene is incredibly popular, and there has been consistent support from Nintendo.

It's tough.

Next to Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade, Kingdom Battle and Splatoon, any year is going to look a little limp.

You also had the likes of Sonic Mania and Golf Story supporting those bigger games.

There's been a lot of ports this year and the first party titles haven't been of the same quality.

I've enjoyed the year, which has seen some really good DLC and great smaller games released.

But in terms of Switch original content, it's been a bit lacklustre.

As expected a lot of obfuscation in this thread. "What drought"?

Nintendo's internal teams had a very light 2018. I have been asking the same questions as the OP. Nintendo talked a big game a few years ago about how combining their development efforts on one console was going to improve output. Currently we haven't seen much of a change.

Hopefully 2019 is much better.

I'm sure they could've released some form of Wario Ware on Switch though, just felt like short sighted releasing a game like that on the 3DS. I know the console is still selling but many of us have moved on from it.

Either way it's been a dry year for Switch, I haven't bought a single game for it.

Well, you know, Wario Ware Gold is amazing and a perfect fit for the 3DS, so I'm not sure what you want with that. If you have "moved on", maybe move back?

But yeah the Switch year has been terrible. Really have to wonder what Nintendo is doing.

But at the same time the 3DS (and New 2DS XL specifically) are still the God-tier handheld. The game support has been very satisfying when taking in third parties in addition to Nintendo.

I wonder when Grezzo and Alpha Dream will join the party?

Just tried the Ever Oasis demo on 3DS today, really liked it.

Not a drought, but there hasn't really been much from Nintendo that has made me excited in 2018. Mario Party and Kirby are kinda let downs, but at least smash is coming in a month.

The Wii U had a strong library of virtual console titles, proper media applications, and anciliary games like Pikmin, Wii Sports, Art Academy, and Super Mario Maker at a time when they were making other games, sometimes duplicate versions of the same games for the 3DS. Now we have a situation where they're targeting one platform (supposedly) and they're still releasing games for 3DS only like Metroid Returns, Luigi's Mansion and Wario Ware.

The situation isn't as bad as the Wii U's worst drought, but it really does seem strange that they didn't build Switch in to every single development pipeline that they had going. Next year will be better.

To be fair, I don't remember Nintendo ever actually saying this. The only times I've seen this argument was when their extremely lackluster wiiu output was criticized and fans used this as an excuse.

I don't think there was a drought. You simply have to space out your releases. Switch is only 1.5 years old. Lot's of games will come in the future. There is nothing to worry.

Grezzo just got done with the 3DS remake of Luigi's Mansion, so I imagine that whatever Switch project that may have been in the planning stages has their undivided attention now. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they're going to do a top-down Zelda game. It's a similar story with Alphadream, as they're wrapping up the BIS remake and will likely head right into M&L6 as soon as they're able to. Definitely going to love seeing their spritework in HD for the first time.

They put out Spiderman, GoW, anddddd that's it. These two games are top notch and probably both fighting for my GoTY atm but to complain about Nintendo's first party output as a drought when the other publishers are putting out less in terms of first party is absurd at best.

Sony has put out at least three Game Of The Generation tier games just this year, with their mind-blowing third party support to top that off (Dragon Quest XI!), so they're just on a completely different level compared to Nintendo right now. To say that they're putting out "less" when they're putting out some really incredible games, and Nintendo is re-releasing Wii U ports, that's the actual absurd part.

Yeah I don't think there's a drought, rather games that you and I don't care for.

But honestly I thought development times would be faster though and they stopped development for the Wii u a while back, also expected to see more ports.

I've only heard this from fans whenever 3DS got a new game.

And you know how people like to twist any comment into "well, they were hyping it up".

They're still supporting the 3DS.
Don't remind me.

Seeing all these cool games make way to the 3DS and not the Switch were it would actually function and play better hurts.

The thought that not buying these games because it may eventually be ported or to make money on them Nintendo will have to port them keeps crossing my mind.

Just to add to my original point, it doesn't help that the first big game of 2019 is another port.

I'm excited for Luigi's Mansion 3, Prime and Bayonetta 3 though.

and you're comparing sony's output for ps4 in 2018 to nintendo's switch games in the second year of the platform. here's what sony had for the second year of ps4:

  • Retail
    • Destiny (Published by Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan only)
    • Driveclub
    • Infamous First Light (Retail version in PAL, digital download only in North America)
    • Infamous Second Son
    • LittleBigPlanet 3
    • MLB 14: The Show (Retail version in North America, digital download only in PAL)
    • The Last of Us Remastered
  • PlayStation Network
    • CounterSpy
    • Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition
    • Entwined

    • Killzone: Shadow Fall Intercept(Standalone version)

even more because you're just counting Switch...
probably because 3DS is still a thing across wiiu and switch.
otherwise you can't count Smash Bros and Pokémon
And i'm not! Those are 2018 titles, and i'm talking about 2017.
Funny how that works for you, making those rules for the sake of it.
Well, I am responding to a op who think that 2018 was horrible, so the only reasoning i could come up with is that he wants games as big as the ones release in 2017 to be satisfied, and i'm explaining that he cant reasonable expect that without years without those said games in between.

you're right, i can see how if you had a wii u and had all the nintendo games on it nintendo didn't have that much to offer this year. for me, this year i played four amazing wii u ports for the first time (bayo 1+2, captain toad, tropical freeze), and also have another wii u port that i haven't started (hyrule warriors).
but i don't believe everyone who calls the lineup bad had played those games on wiiu. some people just don't count ports even if they've never played them.
For sure. Should have added the 3rd type of people, which are the people most vocal on message boards. The ones who discount ports not because they played them, but because they don't fit their narrative of the Switch having a disappointing lineup.

In terms of thread creators, I try to give them the benefit of the doubt they have a legitimate concern, unless it's clear they're making a narrative, or have a history of it.

Actually the real reason to look foward to 2019 is portable Resident Evil 4

I certainly haven't felt any drought, I'm still struggling to finish games from fuckin' last year. I'm not even half way into XC2 and they just released a massive expansion pack, I need to get the Octo Expansion for Splatoon 2 too, I still want to 100% Mario Odyssey, then I have DKCR:TF to finish, Captain Toad to start, characters to unlock in Super Mario Party, hell I only just beat Kirby last night. And that's not even counting the 3rd party games I have in my backlog. Or on other systems.

They also did Detroit, Astro Bot, and MLB.

Either way, the output of others doesn't change Nintendo's output.
Astrobot is similar to 3DS exclusives. They are exclusives for a different piece of hardware that you need to own to play these exclusives, so they shouldn't really count as PS4/ Nintendo exclusives. Otherwise Deracine would also count.

I feel like this gets ignored a lot and highlights why Sony had a good year this year, since they've had some pretty major lulls in their first party development for the first two-ish years of the PS4's life. As a reminder, their big holiday game for 2015 was... a remaster collection of the Uncharted games.

This year was so utterly disappointing that I recently sold my Switch. If the hardware refresh that inevitably comes next year is good, I might get another. The lack of interesting Nintendo games combined with holding my game saves hostage behind a pay wall was the end.

Fire Emblem and Yoshi were supposed to be out this year but got delayed. That's it. If Fire Emblem came out a few months ago I don't think we'd be having conversations like this.

Detroit. Easily bigger than GOW or Spider-Man for me.

And I'm not comparing. I'm just saying that PS4 had a completely mindblowing year, and that's total fact. Trying to frame this as some 2014 vs. 2018 thing is completely ridiculous. This is 2018 and we're looking at the games that have come out now. I realize that Nintendo is making that hard by re-releasing 2014 games this year, but still.
