I think that WB would be better off scrapping these Fantastic Beasts films, waiting a few years, and then trying to get the OG cast back together for some film set in the future. Whether that is The Cursed Child or something new.
Why though? They make gangbusters still and allow them to still tap into the HP franchise. Sequels will come in a few years after this trilogy.

I wonder if they might try another spin-off in a different wizardly world. Maybe strong female character at one of the other schools.

So does this now mean that using the subtitle "A <intellectual property> Story" means the film will be a guaranteed bomb?

There is a universe where Black Panther wears the symbiote, how much would that movie earn?

I think WB is still pretty much at the mercy of JK Rowling and whatever she wants to do.

I agree. Unless Fantastic Beasts 2 opens really poorly, it's not going anywhere. I'm just hoping if this is a misfire, they tweak some things to make it more enjoyable in the follow-up films.

I'm kind of surprised WB hasn't tried to make a push on more spin-offs yet, but in fairness, I can see them be hesitant when they're still trying to get the DCCU/DCEU up a bit more in popularity. As well as the industry looking at Solo and learning from what happened there.

I'm not ruling out a Justice League underperformance for FB2

I think that is a safer bet then people think

... Then again, I was wrong on Solo's performance. So who knows.

Sony should've just paid Daniel Craig and Mara whatever they wanted to keep doing those.

Why? Not like the first was a break away success. Did 230mil on a 90mil budget WW. With Fincher, Craig, and Mara all in, they probably would lose more on the backend deals as well since they all had pull.

What are the chances Illumination makes The Cat in the Hat? All they gotta do is convince Seuss' widow that they won't turn it into a Family Guy style comedy.

Because I seriously doubt that this particular sub-franchise is healthy enough to run its proposed length on the sorts of production budgets that it demands. And WB runs the risk of diluting their brand.

The first Fantastic Beasts was already a $200M film. I doubt that this one was cheaper.

Except for most of them in Phase 3.

An unusually strong Chinese gross pushing Venom past all of these films is pretty funny in light of the people in these threads who pegged it as a flop. But in terms of studio revenue, Venom is going to be on the bottom of the list of all of these $750-850M superhero films. China isn't that profitable, even when grosses are huge. Luckily Venom was one of the cheapest major superhero films, so still a big success for Sony.
Most of those that have done more are team up in some way right? Ragnarok (Thor + Hulk), Homecoming (SM + IM). Only GotG2 and BP have grossed more with just the original team in the film.

ASIB - $178M
TGS - $174M
LLL - $151M
LM - $148M
MM2 - $120M

Bohemian Rhapsody is going to go far too. The myth that the Hollywood musical is over seems to be just that - a myth.

My guy is about to be the new Japanese actor who Hollywood casts to play every Japanese character. Joining the likes of Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada.

The fact that Venom of all films outgrossed the Justice League Movie.

Pretty much beating a dead horse that this point, but still can't fathom how big a failure a film with the fucking JL managed!

Dragon Tattoo bombing is the least surprising movie news this year.

Who on earth thought it was a good idea to make an English language entry of the 4th installment in a series when only the first one was ever made in English?

Sorry if this is a dumb question- does A Star is Born have enough juice to hit $200m domestic? It seems to me that it does, but I know we're headed into a crowded season. Would be a fantastic result if so.

Dragon Tattoo strikes me as the kind of thing that's going to get re-adapted into a streaming series in a handful of years.

Oh yeah, speaking of DCEU, Aquaman is next month, any projections on how that is going to do.

Are people even going to take Aquaman seriously? I feel like they are going too far in the other direction to try and make Aquaman cool with Mamoa so far and his bro attitude.

Actually I think the opposite. Not going to far with the cool factor and all in with the silliness. It looks wacky as fuck and not serious at all.

Last projection we had was a 40-60 million opening. We might see an actual competition between it and Antman 2.... maybe? Antman 2 opened up to 75 million, but Aquaman will have some of that Christmas season.

Aquaman does nothing for me. The character himself is the embodiment of everything that sucks about the DCEU and the plot seems like they mixed a sub par version of Black Panther with Man of Steel.

The tone seems like it's taking everything seriously in a silly setting. The levity that is in the trailers seems to be appealing to... dudebro wish fulfilment? Every dumb momen that is a speaking line for grunge makes me groan.
