Venom about to outgross nearly ever non-teamup MCU movie.

Except for most of them in Phase 3.

An unusually strong Chinese gross pushing Venom past all of these films is pretty funny in light of the people in these threads who pegged it as a flop. But in terms of studio revenue, Venom is going to be on the bottom of the list of all of these $750-850M superhero films. China isn't that profitable, even when grosses are huge. Luckily Venom was one of the cheapest major superhero films, so still a big success for Sony.

So over the last two years, with absolutely no one expecting it Sony has established two franchise potential IPs. Jumanji and venom. Although I'd like to point out technically their already is an expanded Jumanji universe, OG Jumanji, Zathura and welcome to the Jungle. I love Zathura

Great news for Venom and hopefully Into the Spider-Verse knocks it out the park too. Who knows maybe after these two films Sony may just give us an older Peter Parker or hell Ben Reilly as their universes Spider-Man. Great hold by Bohemian Rhapsody, movie is great and I may just go see it one more time.

I hope Sony either rips off Insomniac Spider-Man or takes on Ben Reilly.

That Grinch feels completely toothless. Skeptical as I've ever been of Carrey's Grinch, it at least felt Grinchy. This just seems like a generic loner-and-his-dog story.

My kids will be dragging me to see it... i have one question... does The Grinch do the snake thing?

Also what happened with the Spider Tattoo? Was it just a missed mark? AGWTDT I thought was well recieved.

venom is about to beat both amazing spider-man films

hopefully sony realizes there is no place in the market for a shitty sony made spider-man film. let marvel keep cranking out the spidey flicks, keep the character hot, and... I guess you can keep making these weird shitty spidey-less spidey villain films because people seem to like them.

also after suicide squad and now venom, I have zero doubt that a solo gambit film, even if it was complete garbage, would have done gangbusters.

any movie can out-gross JL at this moment, stop acting surprised everytime it happens
WB really missed it

I thought Grinch was a cute movie. It's a little slow, but I'd much rather see that than another damn Marvel superhero movie.

I doubt it.

Gambit wasn't anywhere near as popular as Venom was in his prime.

The fact that Venom can do this well even with a film this bad really speaks to the character's appeal but I wouldn't expect a repeat performance if the second movie is as terrible or worse. Carnage might save it though.

Grinch movies are up there with Robin Hood with movies that keep getting remade a million times. I'm assuming people keep going to these things, but I don't understand it.

If it was actually good? Then yeah.

As it is, it pretty much turned out to be exactly what I feared it would be. Which is nothing new for Sony's live action superhero offerings and is no more depressing than usual.

That's what Snyder brings to the table. DCEU was doomed the moment that guy was hired to lead it. His JL film was a mess so Whedon had to come in to try to fix it.

You don't know what you're talking about. Whedon was brought onboard to finish the film while Snyder was dealing with the suicide of his daughter, and Whedon changed his movie and fucked everything up.

On one hand, we should all be disappointed that Venom did well.

On the other hand, it doing better than Justice League is hilarious.

Nah, this is going to lead to more interesting things than Venom or whoever being wasted by just being regulated to villains of the week. There's more you can do with them than feed them into the MCU grinder.

Homecoming telegraphed that this Spider-Man would be steeped more so in MCU (other franchise characters and elements) than any before it. Marvel said that they didn't want to repeat beats and scenarios from Riami/Webb.

If the Spider-Man movies are going to be MCU and previously unseen (on the big screen) villains, why not also explore Spider-Man characters in their own films, something marvel would never do anyway. This is one of the benefits of fragmentation and it's a a shame we will never got Gambit, Mangolds Logan follow up: X-23, or Alpha Flight due to the buyout.

I mean how many times have we had this song and dance. It wasn't uncommon for this same line of arguement to be used for a venom movie without Spiderman. Same with deadpool. If the character has the appeal the character has the appeal. Comic popularity isn't a linear relationship with box office results.

Overload would have benefited with clover field in the title even if the movie had no link to the other films.

Shame the box office ceiling for Spiderverse is probably going to be lower than other Spidey flicks.

A lot of people are probably going to sleep on it as a kid's flick but it really could be one of the funnest Spider-Man films ever made from the looks of it.

I had a feeling it'd probably be 'meh' considering the other Dr. Seuss CG adaptations but part of me hoped it'd actually be a huge hit. At least I'll always have the live action version

So what you're saying is Venom ate the Justice League's brains?

It will be this directionless, colorless, thing. Rolling out of the box office. Like a turd...in the wind...

I still want to know how people think Venom is a good movie, oh yes, let's have our big final climatic battle with a venom fighting a near identical looking symbiote with a marginally different shade of black and have them fight at night with a black sky. Sure gonna be able to follow what's going on in that easily.

I can understand people enjoying it as a So Bad It's Good though. Tom Hardy busts into a Restaurant, tries to explain the plot whilst eating everyone's food at the restaurants and ends it by taking a bath in the Lobster Aquarium and and just eats down a lobster. Hilarious in how weird it is. And we haven't even gotten to Venom with Breasts performing a kiss on Tom Hardy part of the film yet which is like watching a really slow car crash.

Sony was always "stuck" with Sony unless they sold off their film division.

Where is this idea coming from that Marvel Studios was going to get Spider-Man back? I've seen it in a few threads now.
Yeah, I mean if people were worried about Spider-Man getting snatched away, theres a chance that could happen no matter how successful the MCU version is.

They could very easily just yank it back when deals are up and they think Marvel has gotten it afloat enough where they can manage it again themselves.

Would hope they would lean in on the multiverse stuff though. Hell, I'm open to live action Miles if they let the Spiderverse team handle it.

Not like the kid is going to get a shot in the MCU before we all die of old age.

The JL hits just keeps coming. A Spider-Man villain movie with no connection to the MCU Spidey, and Woody Harrelson in a bad wig beat a film with fucking Superman, Batman, and WW. That will never stop being amazing to me.

So is this Grinch better than the Jim Carrey one?

Shows just how bad Justice League and how bad a taste BvS had left in peoples mouths.

I think Sony will end up throwing Venom into all their other spidey-less spidey villain films, because I don't see people lining up to see a Morbius the Vampire solo movie otherwise. Venom fans are going to see anything with Venom in it. :p

It really is kind of astounding just how many other films have successfully dunked on JL at the box office.

The movie that had a shot at being bigger than Avengers and they basically ran into a brick wall with it at high speed.

Man The Nutcracker is an insane bomb

Worse than Solo and A Wrinkle In Time for Disney

Rough year outside of Marvel for Disney tbh (and Pixar)

I hooe Wreck it Ralph actually wrecks it (I absolutely love the first one)

The Nutcracker was such a dumb idea. It's like making a version of Fantasia that is not a musical. It entirely defeats the purpose.

Any estimates on what Fantastic Beasts 2 will open to?

Also, did the reviews come out? I'm not sure if I missed it or not.

They saw Marvel jump a ravine on a motorcycle and they tried to do it before they even finished building the ramp, now they just barely cleared it but lost the motorcycle and are trying to build a new one.

Meanwhile Universal had jumped that ravine decades earlier and decided that they'd try it again with zero ramp this time and it went about as expected

Peter Rabbit also.

- Jumanji
- Venom
- Hotel Transylvania
- MiB
- Charlie's Angels

Kaz replacing Sony Pictures management with all former Fox execs might be one of the most underrated things in his CEO tenure. Paying off well so far.

You're a moderately annoyed one, Mr. Grinch
You really are neutered in your latest film versus your original character or even the Carrey film. With a slippery black peeeeeel!

God damn it. I actually thought the first one was alright. Not up there with my enjoyment of the rest of the Harry Potter films, but enjoyable enough.

Disappointed the follow up isn't getting great reviews.

I think that WB would be better off scrapping these Fantastic Beasts films, waiting a few years, and then trying to get the OG cast back together for some film set in the future. Whether that is The Cursed Child or something new.
