Terminator 2 was a CGI fest too, same with Abyss and other Cameron movies. CGI isn't an issue if the movie's good.

It was mostly amazing practical effects, but it did indeed have a small share of CGI. Cutting edge for the time too.

CGI can look utter shit though even in this day and age. Marvel movies are the perfect example of this.

Yeah the CGI was ahead of its time and even then used sparingly, that helps hold up the effects. Compare old Jurassic Park to the new ones, it makes me weep.

Please tell me this is R.

Genisys had a lot of problems, but you could quite feel the "wait, PG 13 though so we can't do that" all over it.

Well, the last 3 Terminators were pure garbage, but maybeeeee this one will be good... nah, who am I kidding?

Cameron being somewhat involved can't hurt, but I just don't have any faith in this. Maybe if they had gotten rid of grandpa Arnold and hard rebooted the whole thing ... but they always gotta have fucking old ass Atnold with his dumb quips.

Jesus. A year of Post production. Pretty much all CGI then.

I miss Stan :(

It doesn't necessarily mean a year in post production, they may just be looking for an advantageous release date. Putting Terminator up against summer blockbusters has clearly not worked for a while.

Tim Miller is the wildcard here

I get the cynicism about the project and Genisys was ass, my expectations are low but ...Miller proved he had a good, lean eye in Deadpool. Equally Cameron at least gets a story credit in this, so at least is a little more involved than being wheeled out during the PR circuit and saying nice things.

I'll give it a fair shot

I'm certainly interested, year will be over before we know it!

The t-rex breaking out followed by it being mostly practical is what absolutely sells the CG. I really wish we could go back to the time where CG and practical were used together to enhance each other. Man that stuff was amazing and still is in some films.

Eh? Cameron used mostly practical effects before Avatar, even Titanic is filled with a ton of insane practical effects which were tweaked or reworked with CG. The guy knew when to use CG and when not to use CG. Also, this photo of T2 will not stop to amuse me:

And filling a void with Wonder Woman and Bond gone from the schedule, wide open.

It really wasn't. They used CGI when it was the best solution method to get an effect shot done. Nowadays they use CGI for every single thing and even overprocess every shot so that it looks like it came right out of photoshop. That's the most important thing. Today's movies lack the raw image you would get in the 80s.

Yes

The special effects done were featured everywhere (from gaming magazines to cinema centric publications)

And for good reasons. CGI was the most advanced one had ever seen and complimented perfectly the practical effects used by Cameron's team.

At least that's what we were subjected to in France (and Cameron's crazyness). This is probably why very few shots look weird now (like when the T-1000 rises from the floor and a few other similar shots)

I think you're confusing special effects with CGI. These days, sure, most of what we call special effects are all CGI but not back then. T2 used a wide range of effects and techniques besides CGI. Stop motion, rear-screen projection, dummies, miniatures, mirror tricks, optical effects, animatronics, tin foil, etc.

I actually really enjoyed Genisys. Underrated for sure, this is coming from a huge 1 and 2 fan.

I really like genesis and it's pribably my second favorite terminator film after the first to watch, even though T2 is a far better film... I just don't enjoy watching it much.

I think it's a lot smarter than it seems to be, probably because it's sequels were cancelled. The idea of sending a Terminator back to raise Sarah in the 60s, In order to erase the events of T1 which would inevitably lead to judgement day and the death of John Connor in T3 was great, as was skynet realizing it needed the most brilliant human mind it could never understand or beat, thus chosing to pluck him out of a different timeline to be their agent was cool as well.
