So I cracked open the Uber app for the first time in a while and I see this new option called Express Pool (apparently rolled out to my city less than 2 months ago). I was gonna take Uber Pool anyways and this was $5 cheaper so I figured sure why not, and ordered myself an Express Pool.

The app tells me to walk a couple hundred meters to a main street where the driver would pick me up. I do, I get to the spot first and sure enough the driver pulls up a minute after. He picks me up and drops me off also on a main street and I walk a few hundres meters on local streets to my destination.

What's good about this? First of all, walking is good and saving ~$5 for a few hundred meters of walking is a steal. Also, sometimes drivers can suck navigating local / neighborhood roads so it just feels smooter meeting them on a main road. The express part comes into play here since you don't have to wait around for the driver to take local roads to drop off the other passengers.

That being said, I'm not too sure I would take it if I wasn't already familar enough with the area to walk around it comfortably. Apparently it can make you walk anywhere within a 250m radius. Also, the drop off seem kinda iffy, they had to stop in a right turn lane to let me off. Overall would Express Pool again, especially over Pool.

Anyone else take Express Pool?

Somewhere
Does it tell you in-app where to walk to get to the pickup? Seems easy enough combined with Google Maps to walk the rest of the way.

I'm actually all for that sort of thing though. I'm cheap as hell, I'll walk an extra mile if it saves me a couple bucks, not a problem. Uber in general is a last resort for me.

lol pretty much.

Express has pretty much never actually had me walk. Then one day a non-express uber driver randomly dropped me off like 10 blocks from my house and argued with me that that's what he was supposed to do. Idk i fucking hate uber.

I thought it was going to be a pain. I took my first last weekend, coming back from the airport. It was painless, cheap, and they even dropped me off directly in front of my apartment by happenstance. Curious to try it again.

Only thing, if you're a woman traveling alone at night, it might not be the best option. My uber driver decided to drop her right near her place, because the spot the app selected was kind of sketch and a few blocks for her. Put him in a curious predicament as to what to do.

I hate it when I'm trying to get home from work. It usually tells me to stand on a dangerous and inconvenient spot (for both me and the driver) so I gotta stand on the curb on the other side of the intersection and flag the driver down and hope he doesn't hate my guts.

Edit: Would like it a lot more if you could tell the app that spot it chose is shit

I'm not too sure how it even chooses to spot but yea I can see this being a problem. Cars just can't stop on any main road.

Shuttle from my airport costs $1 and runs every15 minutes. The downtown circulator runs all over downtown every15 minutes and is free.

Our public transportation isn't even great.

Wow. It's simulating a bus line. If only we invested in better public transit.

these tech companies like uber and Google sometimes think that they are reinventing transportation when really all they're inventing is a city bus. It drives me crazy and it's so much less efficient and environmentally unfriendly than a bus

This feature sounds similar to what another app offered when I was in NYC but the name escapes me. My city doesn't have any of these apps :(
