Zelda is one of Nintendo's most prestigious franchises ever, so seeing it not get some more representation in Smash Bros is odd.

Yes, I know Toon Link was in Brawl but I dont think he even necessarily counts since he is both a clone of Link and a replacement for Young Link.

I would have loved to at least have Impa make it in as a playable character

Probably the biggest (no pun intended) Nintendo Villain rep left not playable yet.

EDIT: Toon Link hardly counts.

Agreed. The Zelda series has been shafted hard since the beginning. Even in Melee out of the four new characters we got, two were clones.

Looking at the representation, one would never think it's Nintendo's third biggest franchise.

I've always felt like Skull Kid was a no brainer, but maybe I had overestimated his relevance.

Funny enough the Zelda cast got the most changes in Smash this time around than any other franchise in smash ultimate

Link, Zelda, and ganondorf have all new movesets, final smash attacks. None of other series cast members got this much changes

I still count echo fighters like Toon Link.

That said, I really really want Hyrule Warriors Impa (or a version thereof) and Skull Kid.

The Link prime in Brawl and Ultimate are technically new reps, from a character perspective. Same goes for Zelda too

I mean Toon Link has got to count. I get what you're saying but... he's a new character.

But that aside it was poor from Brawl > 4 but I'm cool ATM. Zelda, Ganondorf and Link's changes even purely aesthetically are sweet.

I'd love Ghirahim to be playable tho.

Saying that Toon Link doesn't count as a newcomer because Young Link didn't come back is like saying Lucario doesn't count as a newcomer because Mewtwo didn't come back.

I've always suggested that Skull Kid and Midna would both be very welcome additions. Their ever-lasting general popularity in a series with only a handful of returning characters would make them fit right in.

Piranha Plant changed the game, we have a generic enemy as a character, I don't think it would hurt to have an important side character or popular one-off villain too.

Speaking of Piranha Plant and Zelda.... give me a Deku Baba echo you cowards!!

Zelda veterans get a ton of love in new appearances and moves. The franchise is far from neglected in Smash if you look outside newcomers.

There are three wholly unique movesets spread across the six Zelda characters in Smash

The other three movesets are

Young Link - A clone of the original's moveset
Toon Link - A clone of the original's moveset that replaced the previously mentioned character when that character was cut from ther oster
Ganondorf - A clone of Captain Falcon

It's not only that there haven't been new movesets added since Melee, it's that the stuff already in there is redundant and, in the case of Ganondorf, not really Zelda.

I mean, the idea of "reps" in the first place is weird. Smash is defined by it's variety and I think expecting more characters from specific games or series' due simply to their fame or popularity is kind of the antithesis of what made it work in the first place.

Of course, I also would have loved Hyrule Warriors Impa, haha. I love her.

Can I say how disappointed I am that Kid Link shares the same final smash as Toon Link, they couldn't even gave him a quick Fierce Diety transformation.

To be fair, the Zelda series doesnt have any other consistent characters aside from Impa. But Impa would be a great addition, especially with her Skyward Sword design

I don't think there's a really obvious new Zelda character. Pig Ganon, I guess? Tingle's kind of faded from the series. I don't know about adding Midna or Skull Kid after all this time. Impa's a weird choice because she never has a consistent look.

Zelda does get a lot of representation in Smash beyond playable characters. It has a lot of stages. It has a number of assist trophies. It has quite a few music tracks.

Is young link actually suppose to be from majora? I know he has bow and arrow and great bay is in the game but he has no masks or anything. Plays more like early oot with a bow and arrow.

Think skull kid would be a big hit, it had a lot of hype when it was rumored. But I get more casual fans don't care about him

This is a great screenshot.

Young Link has really bizarre proportions compared to BotW Link though. I guess it's a necessary evil of a fighting game where all characters need to be kinda-sorta the same size.

Completely agree. Smash rules always break and it's going to be a glorious day when the "no Zelda one-offs" rule is broken. I don't bask in salt a lot, but this will be a time I do.

Zelda is one of their most important series and not having a new original rep since Melee is ridiculous. Like we have people in the Smash thread acting like a second Pokémon representative is completely warranted for DLC after we got three returning vets and a newcomer, yet saying "Zelda is fine it doesn't need more."

The series is full of characters that could make for great movesets and playstyles, it shouldn't matter that they're only in one game.

Just thinking about how it's one of Nintendo's premier franchises and it hasn't gotten an original character in its crossover fighting series for 17 years its just crazy.

At least they paid more care to the Zelda vets in Ultimate. They all look fantastic. Smash 4 was awful to the series in terms of character representation.
Toon Link counts dude.
Not really, no. He's a derivative moveset and was clearly added late into Brawl given his SSE placement. That would be like if someone in 2015 said "oh it's been so long since the last 3D Zelda" and another person replied "we just got Majora's Mask 3D dude"

I get what you're saying, but the point I'm trying to make is that there is actually not much variety in the current Zelda roster of characters

Out of six characters, three are clones of different characters

That is certainly true. I won't say the series doesn't get live. But compared to Pokemon and Mario, the Zelda franchise has shockingly few unique fighters and movesets. Metroid of all things has as many unique movesets as Zelda now, and is only an echo or two short of Zelda's Smash roster size.

You could easily add both a Goron and a Zora to Smash Bros and it wouldn't be out of place, considering the history and pedigree of the Zelda franchise.

I'd love to see Ghirahim playable in smash. Unfortunately I don't see it ever happening since I'd imagine they would pull from the latest Zelda game. If they did pull from BotW I'd like to see Daruk or Urbosa.
