Lot of ways to say "we need that money". I will say, I never thought about calling up an "expert" from Microsoft to ask for some type of help. That's a pretty good reason to join them. I'm glad they can get that but I'm not looking forward to the future of Obsidian by Microsoft.

There's really no need to explain anything especially after the sales number for PoE2.

"Because pretty much every other path we could take would lead us to the same destination as TellTale."

...Interesting though that InXile was acquired in the same batch.

Good for the workers at Obsidian, but they should brace themselves for the eventual closure in a couple of years (which, I guess, would've happened now without Microsoft?)

I heard a rumor last year that they're working on an original science fiction property. My recent LinkedIn scouting has turned up suggestive stuff as well.

Chris L'Etoile currently works at Obsidian and has done so since last year. He was the "IP" guy for Mass Effect 1 and 2 who wrote all the codex and much more. He was also credited on Dragon Age Origins as a designer and oddly enough, The Elder Scrolls online. If you need a world built in terms of fiction, he's your guy. Could be a sign that the MS deal for InXile and Obsidian might turn up something greater in scope than their recent games.

Yeah, I think their options were "fire most of the staff and hope we can sign a new project before we have to close down the studio" or "let Microsoft buy us." The work-for-hire market is almost entirely dead and the commercial failure of PoE2 means they can't rely on that IP to carry the studio.

As much as I dislike this acquisition, I can't blame them. I wish them luck with whole my heart.

They had luck, let's remember they didn't do a Kickstarter years ago because they wanted independence, but because it was the only path to financing left they had. They were saved by MS in the nick of time.

I wonder if console Pillars of Eternity 2 will be xbone exclusive now.
It won't. Microsoft has showed that they won't stop games for other consoles that are already in development. Just showed that with We Happy Few and I remember them releasing games on Nintendo platforms back in the day after Rare was acquired.

Cant these studios eventually buy their way out like Bungie did? I'm still not sure how Microsoft let them go in the first place. It beats just closing them down of course.

Sad news, but I suppose they didn't have much of a choice. I don't see how this will do anything but make their future sales even lower though. Unless, of course, they make less crpg type stuff.

Very interesting what Josh Sawyer said. I feel like Microsoft is making all these acquisitions to have a more diverse portfolio on Game Pass and get recurring subscribers more than direct sales.

I really hope that this is true. Historically, they've not shown that they understand the value of a diverse library, but maybe that's changing. Still a shame that they have to buy out multiplatform developers to do it though. It's not good for consumers at large.

That's very harsh. By all accounts they were probably going to shut down anyway, so at least they have a chance to do something cool now.

They seem like a great group of people, and they seem genuinely happy. Good get for MS.

Xbox is finally run by people that like games, so thats helpful. Before they have always been under some other group like Windows. Now, its Phil's show to run with him only answering to the CEO.

Oh, that's pretty exciting. Can't wait to see what Obsidian will cook up, it's been a while since they've had a big budget to work with.

Next gen is going to be very competitive.

And I honestly believe after the onslaught of excellent sony exclusives MS does want to let the devs do there thing.

Between this and the Ninja Theory video, they seem to really be pushing the whole "cross-studio collaboration" thing. Not like full blown joint efforts from entire dev teams, but rather drawing expertise from studio to studio, project to project.

I mean, that's what is in my parenthesis - that Obsidian presumably would've closed anyway, so it's a catch-22

Game Republic, Incognito, Relentless Software, Bigbig, Zipper, SCE Liverpool, LightBox, Eat Sleep Play.

Is Sony EA too?

lol this isn't some console warrior bs, yeah, Sony is just like EA too, a huge multinational corporation that absorbs and buy out companies to increase their concentration of market power.

I mean they could have kept them around so they could have put out games that still wouldn't convince people here to get a Xbox.

Sorry, I am not following you?

Now that they have that sweet Microsoft money, they need to work on the amazing spy RPG series, First Procedure.

I think it's something they're (hopefully) learning from Sony. IIRC Sony has a studio which is dedicated purely to enhancing the technical aspects of all the studios. It shows in the absolute powerhouses that Sony games have been on a technical level this gen. That type of cooperation between studios is a huge boon. Need to get feedback on your combat? Ask Ninja Theory, they make fantastic combat games. Need help on engine work? Microsoft has multiple studios with extensive experience in that field.

The song playing in the background is really a non-apologetic rip-off of "Two steps from Hell - Heart of courage" just octave higher and in major dorian scale, if you don't believe me, try to play it on your own instrument, so, Mass Effect 2 follow up incoming? Since that have that OG song in the background. Just saying.

It is to keep them afloat. There. No need to sugarcoat reality with buzzwords.

Both tracks are from PoE soundtracks.

I wonder if there's any significance to the video cutting to clips from Fallout: NV when the person speaking says "we can make the type of games we want to make." What are the chances they can use InXile's Wasteland IP to make Wasteland: New Vegas?
