I cant believe I just discovered this recently. I am like 8 years late lol. Youtube is a goldmine full of great AGDQ speedruns. Not only are the runs great, but the commentary is often very entertaining. Here are some of my fav vids:

Could spend all day watching these runs.

The dragon quest run is a must watch.

GDQs give me something to look forward to every 6 months. I've been watching them for about 3 years now. Always enjoy Monkey Ball runs because I find them super relaxing for some reason lol

Some of the speedrunners are not only great at speedrunning but also great at entertaining the audience while speedrunning. I love to watch those especially. I guess the often cringey donation messages and donation anouncers are a necessary evil I can live with.

Go watch some of the Mirrors Edge speedruns with good commentary. That game requires both crazy skill and luck.

Also, that pro Tetris showcase.

I would say the commentary is the only reason to watch. A speedrun is an incredibly poor substitute for an actual playthrough, especially in the sense that so much content is skipped over (usually the best, optional stuff). If the commentary is shit I immediately tune out. I also find Sent to be weirdly entertaining but totally understand why you might not.

Trying to think of my favourites...
I'm on the PS4 browser, so providing links is a pain and I won't bother, but CovertMuffin's Jedi Outcast run and cheese05's Mario 64 run from last SGDQ are personal favourites.

Also, ThatMexicanRunner doing Battletoads Turbo Tunnel blindfolded.

Got into GDQ a few years ago in a period when I had a lot of downtime after being made redundant and found the runs a lot more entertaining than I thought they would be. It was a 4-way Super Metroid race that really got me hooked though. I'm always up for Castlevania runs and Tetris Grand Master showcases are always great but I think the awful games blocks are my favourite.

Don't forget to watch Sinister and Zallard do Punch Out and Super Punch Out blindfolded. Those are both crazy runs.

The Dragon Quest run was one of my favourites, glad you enjoyed it OP. What absolute mastery of the game, I really didn't think it'd be that interesting to watch. I was so glad I kept watching to catch it.

A recent one that I've really enjoyed and would highly recommend was MitchFlowerPower and GrandPOOBear doing a vs race of Super Mario Bros 3 in the All Forts category, and it doesn't go quite as planned. It's a great watch, and has a lot of what makes speedrunning so great.

They also had a recent follow up to this run that's worth a watch.

This year's SGDQ was the first one I properly watched and I loved it. Shantae and the metroid games were some personal highlights.

I also recommend the RE4 run

Only bad thing about GDQ is that I'm in Italy, so the best games are usually run when it's nighttime here.

... on the other hand, it's not like I'd always have the time to watch them during daytime either, LOL.

That, and the fact that there's only so many times you can watch a Megaman/Castlevania/Super Mario Bros/Metroid whatever run before they run out of new stuff to show. No wonder races have exploded and become so popular in the last 3 years. Competition makes even the tritest runs entertaining.

I'm following a german gaming channel (Rocketbeans) and they have a show about speedruns (Speedrundale). At first I was like: Ok, lets just have a look at it - and it quickly became one of my favourite shows! (A speedrun right into my heart. Ha, ha... ha...)
I didn't expect it to interest me that much but it's really fascinating to see what is possible. When you played a game yourself, you can even better value what the speedrunner is doing. I love Yoshi's Island to death and seeing a speedrun of it nearly melted my brain.

GDQ is like Christmas season, I anticipate it so much and love watching as much as I can.

Awful games block is always the most entertaining.
