Scotland will be the first country in the world to include education on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex issues in school curricula, after adopting recommendations that will make LGBTI education mandatory in all public schools by 2021.

"Our education system must support everyone to reach their full potential," Deputy First Minister John Swinney said in a statement. "That is why it is vital the curriculum is as diverse as the young people who learn in our schools."

The Scottish Parliament adopted all 33 recommendations put forth by the LGBTI Inclusive Education Working Group, which are intended to address bullying, discrimination, and prejudice in schools.

Ninety percent of LGBT people in Scotland have experienced homophobia, biphobia or transphobia at school, and 27% of LGBT people have attempted suicide as a result of bullying according to a 2016 study from the Time for Inclusive Education Campaign, which worked closely with the government on the initiative.

The curriculum will include material on different identities and terminology, history of the LGBTI movement, and how to recognize and address homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. It will also cover issues like respect, privacy, and consent.

Awesome! Scotland really doesn't deserve being forced out of the EU just because they have a bigot neighbor with more power.

No exemptions or opt-outs.

Bit from The Guardian: Scotland to embed LGBTI teaching across curriculum

Scotland will become the first country in the world to embed the teaching of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex rights in the school curriculum, in what campaigners have described as a historic moment.

State schools will be required to teach pupils about the history of LGBTI equalities and movements, as well as tackling homophobia and transphobia and exploring LGBTI identity, after ministers accepted in full the recommendations of a working group led by the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign. There will be no exemptions or opt-outs to the policy, which will embed LGBTI inclusive education across the curriculum and across subjects and which the Scottish government believes is a world first.

Jordan Daly, the co-founder of TIE, said the "destructive legacy" of section 28 had come to an end. This legislation, introduced in 1988, banned local authorities in the UK from "promoting" homosexuality, until it was eventually repealed in Scotland 2001 and in the rest of the UK two years later.

Daly said: "This is a monumental victory for our campaign, and a historic moment for our country. The implementation of LGBTI inclusive education across all state schools is a world first. In a time of global uncertainty, this sends a strong and clear message to LGBTI young people that they are valued here in Scotland."

Scotland's been doing their thing for minute. Really awesome news. Really wish America mandated such education.

Of course! It was a mandatory course that all students took but Rowling forgot to mention it.

I hope they paid more attention than they did in History of Magic because those ungrateful punks disrespected poor Professor Binns. It's history of fucking magic! It's gotta be fascinating!

I'm not sure why LA is considered the most gay-friendly place in the world. I really don't think it is

Are you a gay person living in LA? Because I am and it's super fucking friendly here. Especially the further west you go toward the gay Mecca of Weho.

I really hope some footage of these courses leak out, because I would love to hear a teacher with a scottish accent talk about gender identities and intersectional feminism. Just music to my ears.

This is great news. Scotland has come a long way. My wee brother is gay, engaged and just bought a house with his partner. All this has happened with the full love and support of his family and friends and it definitely would not have been the case here 20 years ago.

It will be something like this.

Wonderful news. Countries and leaders who call themselves progressives need to follow in Scotland's lead and do the same. God damn Ford and the Ontario Conservatives.

Great news. So a govt listened to a population having a serious issue, backed up with data, and then followed through to enact sensible policies to help combat said issue. Scotland out here making too much sense in this world!

Braw. Good to see our government making sensible decisions. Been reasonably impressed with SNP. Shame we didn't get independence but they still do a good job in government. I have voted Labour last few elections to help in Westminster cos I think independence has gone now and I need to vote against Tories but I'd still rather be governed by SNP.

Nice! Ontario did something like this too, conservatives overturned it years later when they came into power. Hopefully this is here to stay

I hate living here but at least you sometimes get good news like this.

Unfortunately we aren't likely to have any functioning schools in a few years time by the time this is implemented. We'll be using those books as food.

Not America
And here in Ontario, Canada, the degenerate and regressive conservatives have seen fit to take sex education back to the 90s curriculum. So no acknowledgement of LGBTQ folks.

Kudos to Scotland btw.

Fuck yeah, Scotland! I wish I could believe that some like that could happen in America but I just can't see it.
