You could absolutely make a case for it. I loved it too. I wouldn't place it at the very top, but I do think it's a top 3 Tarantino for me.

If we're doing lists I'd say this is mine:

1: Pulp Fiction
2: Inglourious Basterds
3: Reservoir Dogs
4: Jackie Brown
5: Hateful Eight (so I guess not top 3 now that I think about it)
6: Kill Bill (Vol 1 and 2)
7: Django Unchained
8: Death Proof

Nah. It's good, and I'll always watch it any time it's on... but I could say that about any of his movies.
Out of all of them though, I'd rather be watching Inglorious Bastards, Kill Bill, Jango, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, or Reservoir Dogs. Though maybe it's just because it's the one I've seen the most recently.

how did sam jackson get on that bed after being shot through the floor? did that guy hiding in the basement just let him and the other wounded guy crawl away? why not keep blasting?

My order -

1. Kill Bill Vol. 1
2. Django Unchained
3. Inglorious Basterds
4. The Hateful Eight
5. Kill Bill Vol. 2
6. Pulp Fiction

I would rate the others but I either didn't see them (Jackie Brown) or can't remember them very well (Reservoir Dogs, True Romance). Kill Bill will always be my favourite but all his films are great in some way. Really enjoyed Hateful Eight.

I really liked it, and didn't much care for Django, Death Proof, or Inglourious Basterds (they are not bad movies by any means).

3. Kill Bill Volume 2
4. Jackie Brown
5. Kill Bill Volume 1
6. Inglorious Basterds
7. The Hateful Eight
8. Django

Sin City and Four Rooms were both good, too, but they were collaborative directorial projects.

1. Kill Bill 1
2. Kill Bill 2
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Death Proof

.. I can only think of four good Tarantino movies. I think the rest are trash.

It's in the middle, but above Death Proof (annoyed me so much in the first few minutes that I didn't make it much further) and Jackie Brown (I'll never understand the huge love for this - it's one of the least interesting Leonard adaptations, imo).
Pulp Fiction hasn't been, and probably will never be topped. Its influence on modern cinema is too great, and it's still basically a perfect movie even today.

i liked samuel l jackson's character until he turned out to be a rapist and that's when i mentally checked out
Pretty sure that's just a story he tells

Hmm, I interpreted it as Warren trying to get the General riled up and get him to get his gun so he could shoot him in self defence.

Though he did burn 47 other men to escape and I don't know why you still liked him then... ;)

It was way too long and I felt like it took a sadistic glee in presenting the violence towards the woman convict. I know she was presented as a bad person but it almost felt pornographic when she's getting smacked in the face. Really felt skeevy and I didn't enjoy that at all.

It was beautifully shot for the most part though, I'll give it that. The snowy mountains when Sam Jackson's character is telling his story were gorgeous.

I liked it a lot, but it doesn't come close to Jackie Brown, Basterds, or Kill Bill Vol. 1 for me. Incredible setup and climax, though.

so I consider the Kill Bill movies to be his stylistic crossroads so for me his best pre-Kill Bill movie is Pulp Fiction and his best post-Kill Bill movie is Inglorious Basterds. I honestly don't think those two movies can be debated against

Tried to watch it twice and couldn't make it more than 20 minutes into the movie. I've loved everything else he's done (that I've seen anyway) but this one was a complete miss for me.

Inglorious Basterds
Django
Pulp Fiction
Resevoir dogs
Hateful Eight
Kill Bill

I never really put much thought into what his best was, but this thread probed me to give it a though, and Hateful Eight is the one that I have the fondest memories of.

not saying its his best but everyone is forgeting his segment in four rooms... its not a full movie but that part is pretty great in my opinion. on topic it's either hateful eight or the kill bills

Absolutely not.

It's a decent film, but it's nowhere near Tarantino's top.

Pulp Fiction is probably objectively still number 1, but sometimes I tend to think Kill Bill is his best work. Kill Bill feels so fucking over the top compared to almost anything else though that it's hard to directly compare.

Inglorious Basterds is pretty fucking amazing too. It had some of the most intense scenes he's ever done.

If I had to personally rank:
1. Kill Bill
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Inglorious Basterds
4. Django Unchained
5. Reservoir Dogs
6. Hateful Eight
7. Jackie Brown
8. Death Proof

I found it to be lazy, bloated and self-indulgent, culminating with that terrible voice-over where Tarantino basically admits he doesn't know how to write or shoot a whodunnit.

If you're talking about the act-break voiceover, I'd agree it's a bit self-indulgent, but the whole point was that was an artifact of the "road show" version of the film where there was an actual intermission.

Overall, I'd say Hateful Eight has improved for me greatly on rewatches (and I loved it the first time), so it's right up there with Pulp Fiction for me as his best stuff. Others like Inglorious, while fantastic on first watch, have cooled. Django was always really solid. KB: Volume I is a lot of fun, but I found Volume II to be a letdown. Jackie Brown has nicely improved for me over the years, but it's maybe his fourth-best film. Reservoir is fun, but it's an early film.

I prefer Inglorious Basterds, but Hateful Eight was damn good. I received advice to watch it as if you're watching a stage play, and that mentality made me enjoy it immensely.

I have to say though that I also understand why people may not engage this particular movie, it's a little hard to chew on.

I think it's definitely among his weakest films, which is a disappointment.

Walton Goggins is made for Tarantino films but hasn't been given much to work with.

The violence against Daisy lingers and is almost definitely meant to feel off-putting. Her full turn as the most disgusting character in the story doesn't come until much later and one of the central themes in the story is taking character tropes and flipping them around with characters who are - themselves, playing characters.

The violence against Daisy initially feels gross and sadistic but by the end of the film when
they hang her ass
, no one feels any sympathy for her.

no that's Kill Bill.

Kill Bill > Pulp Fiction > Django Unchained > Reservoir Dogs > Inglorious Basterds > Hateful Eight

That being said, it's still really good. It's more consistent than Reservoir Dogs and Inglorious Basterds, but I also think those movies hit higher highs than Hateful Eight. The movie also reminded me a lot of the original Evil Dead, which is always a good thing.

Yep, it's a masterpiece. One of my top 5 favourite movies of all time. Every single scene, every single dialogue, every single moment is intriguing. It has an incredibly long build up. It's like 90 minutes of foreplay or something before the orgasm hits you. It's a Tarantino film. You know someone is going to die. You don't know who, you don't know when, you don't know how. All you can do is sit there and watch the suspense rise.
