Just saw this by Newzoo on twitter and thought that it was interesting to see the game companies with the more revenue on the market. Thanks Dom for the tweet as well.

It would be interesting to see where Valve falls on the chart but they're a private company and anything with them would be an estimate.

Am I remembering wrongly or didn't Sony's fiscal year results show that Playstation had $20 billion/year in revenue?

Wow Take two is surprisingly tiny given that they have nba and GTA. And Ubi is smaller than Namco Bandai. Shocking

Is Sony just PlayStation or are their mobile game revenues included?

And what about Microsoft. I guess this revenue isn't just for Xbox but also includes game revenues from their Windows 10 store, from Minecraft and all other game revenues?

Nintendo being that low is one of the exact reasons paid online now exists. They were literally leaving easy money on the table.

Sony is amazing. Achieving great profits and still making top aaa single player games.

I'm surprised Nintendo is so low as well. Is it just that they don't have much worldwide appeal beyond a few key markets?

Will be interesting to see how much TTWO climbs this list next year with the release of RDR2.

Probably not much. GTAV didn't make them soar either.

I think the lack of micro transaction and monetization royalties is starting to show. Think about all of those loot boxes they don't sell and don't get a 30% cut of.
Sony does very little to none of that though. I think it is a market thing and the online situation.

I checked Nintendo´s numbers because they seemed far too low.

They made around 1,47 billion $ just in the first quarter this FY and around 3 billion $ first half 2018.

But doesn't Sony get a flat 30% cut of every transaction on their system? So for a $1 loot box, they'll get 30%. It EA, UBisoft, and Activision are making a ton more money due to micro transactions, then surely Sony and Microsoft are getting a cut, right?

They do? I honestly have no clue about the breakdown for that. If that is the case, yeah, that should be a noteworthy contribution to overall revenue.

I think it's just Playstation. I could be wrong though.

Interesting but I never understand why sharing revenue but not at least net income?

A company can have more revenue than another yet still being not as much profitable.

I assume Tencent's total includes almost a billion from owning most of SuperCell (Clash of Clans, Clash Royale). It wouldn't surprise me if most of their revenue came from outside of China.

And yeah before we comment too much on these numbers we should double check the source data. Nintendo's number is confusingly low, I don't know if they are excluding hardware sales or what. Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattpe...-with-over-9-billion-in-revenue/#22ba31235ff0

Got it. I wonder where they'd fall.
Going by Steamspy's very rough estimations

https://www.resetera.com/threads/st...aid-game-revenue-63m-accounts-and-more.31523/

Steam had a 4.3B revenue in 2017 from game sales alone. That doesn't include DLCs, MTX etc.

Valve takes 30% of that, so that's about 1.3B revenue for them. As this thread's only for half a year, that'd be about 650M. Double that(numbers from my ass) for MTX and DLCs(especially for big hitters like DOTA 2, CS:GO and PUBG), and you'd get about Nintendo's numbers on the list.

Of course that was for 2017, and we already know that Steam grew quite a lot since then.

So for the moment it's Sony > MS >>>> Nintendo?
Interesting.

Shows pretty well that hardware sales aren't really an indication anymore.

Ubisoft and Nintendo are honestly much smaller than I expected

That Bamco figure is surprising but are they separating out game revenue from film/toys/etc or is it for the whole company?

I think the lack of micro transaction and monetization royalties is starting to show. Think about all of those loot boxes they don't sell and don't get a 30% cut of.
They're starting to get there with f2p really coming in this summer and the subscription service just starting this fall. Lots of revenue lines opening up for Nintendo so don't be surprise to see some real growth there.

Yeah, Sony's recent statement too said their games section took about $9 billion in first half 2018. I don't know why there's a discrepancy here.

Depends on the context. Sony is only up there because they have one of the biggest eco-systems: 80m PS4s.
MS not being too far away because of W10 and Xbox. Nintendo is so low because their eco-system is mid 2000s.
