Venom sees massive success at China box office (2nd highest open behind Avengers: Infinity War)

Seems like if China likes something well enough everyone and their mom will go see it - a friend of mine said every kid in his class went to see Warcraft because "everyone else was going", even people who dislike video games.
Remember when the villain was so comically evil in front of all of his employees while having the charisma of a cat that died crossing a freeway onramp?
"Have a nice life" is the most toothless, third grade insult I've ever heard and they play it up as if it's this big intimidating moment. Movie's trash.

I thought Venom was really fun. Was very surprised about the negative reaction it got (even from the lead actor)

The final movie of the trilogy will reveal that Venom was controlling Snoke or w/e his name is, and has now gone to find a new host in Phasma, who is tired of being ignored in these damn movies.

You also have to factor in the cultural aspect of things. You can't dismiss the fact that the original Star Wars really appealed to the West and also Caucasians, its like their wild west in space. People for example in India and China can't really relate to those characters when they are watching their own movie industry flourish with people like them in roles. I remember when i was growing up that was one reason i couldn't really relate to the film.
Luckily the SW movies have gotten more diverse appealing to lots of other territories.

Went to an 8 o'clock showing at the local theater, and was surprised at how full it was. I think it was the most full I'd ever seen it on a Friday night since I'd started going to that theater.

I was cool with a Venom movie without Spider-Man and I think it being such a smash hit is the least surprising thing ever. Venom is REALLY cool, way better than boring old Spider-Man!

This was always the case though. How many action blockbusters have you seen with critic awards etc? It's only more recently the more people even took notice of critic scores.
It's PG-13. There's no blood and gore outside of a character getting violently stabbed.
Toss in a Spider-Man 2099 series, Superior Spider-Man movie, a SpiderVerse vs Inheritors movie, and I'm in.

I think this incredible opening in China all but guarantees that Sony will now 'bring back' Tom Holland's Spider-Man from the MCU after the next film and start their own self contained 'Sony-Marvel cineverse'.
Any opportunity Rothman can get to kick someone above him in the Hollywood pecking order in the balls he's going to take it.
