Remember when he was telling his girlfriend that there was a murder conspiracy and she was like "Ugh not this again" even though he found out about the conspiracy via an e-mail on HER COMPUTER?

This movie is trash.

Jesus Christ we'll get a decade of bland, increasingly terrible producer-led Sony-Spider-Man-Movies. I'm already tired.

Seems like if China likes something well enough everyone and their mom will go see it - a friend of mine said every kid in his class went to see Warcraft because "everyone else was going", even people who dislike video games.

Enjoyable movie well deserved.

Not the greatest movie on earth by any means though, final battle kinda sucked tbh but hopefully with this sucess they can improve on the sequel.

Remember when the villain was so comically evil in front of all of his employees while having the charisma of a cat that died crossing a freeway onramp?

"Have a nice life" is the most toothless, third grade insult I've ever heard and they play it up as if it's this big intimidating moment. Movie's trash.

I thought Venom was really fun. Was very surprised about the negative reaction it got (even from the lead actor)

Remember when the sym-bye-ote had its big change of heart speech and said it was inspired by Eddie even though Eddie Brock had done absolutely nothing for an entire film besides be a frightened, twitchy dirtbag?

They don't give a shit about Star Wars and yet this does it for em. Ok.

Star Wars doesn't have the built int nostalgia for older generations and their kids didn't grow up on it like the Western world.

You also have to factor in the cultural aspect of things. You can't dismiss the fact that the original Star Wars really appealed to the West and also Caucasians, its like their wild west in space. People for example in India and China can't really relate to those characters when they are watching their own movie industry flourish with people like them in roles. I remember when i was growing up that was one reason i couldn't really relate to the film.

Luckily the SW movies have gotten more diverse appealing to lots of other territories.

-> Guys have to also remember the huge marketing push Venom made in so many products. I was seeing it in random places i would have never expected it, even in big sports matches like boxing or football

Went to an 8 o'clock showing at the local theater, and was surprised at how full it was. I think it was the most full I'd ever seen it on a Friday night since I'd started going to that theater.

Just when I thought we would finally kill that witch Avi Arad from Spidey related films. Thanks China.

Although I'm actually really curious to see more of little orphan Annie Kasady in the next movie.

Glad to see Venom pull great numbers. Looking forward to Venom 2!!

It's not a bad question honestly. A Venom movie without Spider-Man still sounds dumb. I don't think anyone can deny that it's a surprise it's performing so well.

I mean, a solo Venom movie is outperforming the Justice League. There are no rules anymore.
I was cool with a Venom movie without Spider-Man and I think it being such a smash hit is the least surprising thing ever. Venom is REALLY cool, way better than boring old Spider-Man!

They don't give a shit about Star Wars and yet this does it for em. Ok.
Chinese audiences and I have that in common :p
Star Wars is just boring to me

Spider-Man Peter series
Spider-Gwen series
Miles series
Venom series
Silver Sable& Black Cat series (after the game portrayal) ala Bourne/ Die hard
...
Mash it all up in an "event" movie with high profile vilain like Norman Osborn/ Sinister Six
...
$$ Profit

Toss in a Spider-Man 2099 series, Superior Spider-Man movie, a SpiderVerse vs Inheritors movie, and I'm in.

Super happy for Sony and Hardy. Venom was fun. Pure fun. Loved it. It was built like a buddy cop movie and that was the perfect idea imho. Can't wait for Venom 2

As someone who didn't doubt Venom and argued that yes he can stand on his own and have a new origin sans Spiderman this tickles me.

Now if Gambit somehow gets made and makes bank I'll be eating crow until the day I die.

Star Wars has always done really well in Japan though. Even the originals.

Fuck, fair play to Sony Pictures and Rothman.

VENOM was a fucking wretched excuse of a film (it was, don't bother arguing) but what you cannot argue with are the results.

I think this incredible opening in China all but guarantees that Sony will now 'bring back' Tom Holland's Spider-Man from the MCU after the next film and start their own self contained 'Sony-Marvel cineverse'.

Any opportunity Rothman can get to kick someone above him in the Hollywood pecking order in the balls he's going to take it.

Suicide Squad is one of the worst Blockbusters ever made. You don't have to be Suicide Squad to be considered bad. There's a whole world of possibilities between those 2.
Yes, in some ways sheer mediocrity is even worse because there's nothing to talk about.

Suicide Squad fueled much entertaining discourse.
