CNN said:
A wildfire is hopscotching across a northern California county at a rate of roughly 80 football fields per minute, forcing evacuations, injuring residents and firefighters, and sending families racing from their homes.

A state of emergency has been declared for Butte County due to the effects of the Camp Fire, which began around 6:30 a.m. Thursday and quickly spread, said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire. By 2:00 p.m. local time, it had grown to 18,000 acres, according to Cal Fire.

Fueled by winds, the wildfire jumped ridges from Pulga to Concow and down into Paradise, a town of 26,000 people about 85 miles north of Sacramento. Residents awoke to the stench of smoke and the morning horizon drenched in an ashen-orange that was difficult to see or drive through, hindering evacuations.

By 8 a.m. Thursday morning, Paradise resident Tanah Clunies-Ross said she could not see her car from her front door through the cloud of smoke. A fire had broken out in her yard, blocking the path to her car. She feared for her life until a man she didn't know came to her rescue and put it out with a hose.

"Had he not put out that fire, I would not have made it to the car," she said.

Morgan Mason said her father told her that he could hear propane tanks blowing up all over Paradise this morning.

Her father, a lineman for Pacific Gas and Electric Company, was called in from another district to help shut down power, she said.

"This does not look good at all," Mason said on Twitter. "Please keep Paradise and all the first responders in your prayers."

Evacuation orders are in place for Paradise, Magalia, Concow, Butte Creek Canyon and Butte Valley while hundreds of firefighters battle the blaze. At least two firefighters have been injured and multiple civilians injured, but number aren't available yet, Butte County Fire Battalion Chief Bill Reid said Thursday.

Not in the latest stories but a CalFire captain has reportedly told the AP that Paradise is "wiped out" by the fire. Fire just jumped Highway 99 south of Chico, as well.

As of 7 p.m. Pacific, 0 percent contained, 20,000 acres and growing rapidly toward the areas south of Chico. Looking on Twitter, there are a lot of people reported missing, and a lot of them are elderly folks. This could get pretty bad.

This fire isn't even 24 hours old right? Town has a population of 26000 which would be tough to evacuate fully in that period...

EDIT: Yeah pictures showing the Hospital destroyed along with hundreds of structure...doesn't look good at all.

Yeah, it fired up earlier today and the winds blew it straight downhill through Paradise, it seems.

The air was terrible in the Bay Area today.

It just smelled like charcoal the entire day, not to mention the intimidating clouds of smoke all over the place.

Fuck...my brother in-law is from there.

edit: Looks like their family has evacuated. Will see if they have a home to return to, but they are safe.

My friends live in Paradise. They were out of their house somewhere else when all the evacuations started so they couldn't get any of their stuff out. Holding out hope that the house somehow escapes the inferno though it looks bleak

Yeah...

Heard about this earlier today, the smoke reached the bay area around 2PM PST.

This is going to be tragic with how rapidly the fire escalated. The winds today were crazy.

Forests in that area also have lots of pine needles layered ontop.

My best wishes to everyone.

Reno
I grew up not far from there (Corning). Hope everyone is OK and they get this thing under control ASAP.

Damn, this flared up quickly.

Also, I know the name is from the area where the fire started but "camp fire" sounds like a bad joke.

There is another wildfire right now in Camarillo and my camping trip to Refugio tomorrow is likely getting cancelled.

80 football fields by the minute?!

Holy fuck! This will be very tragic but I'm hoping as many people get out as possible.

Ugh, I think i fucked up on my math lol

I can't be doing this right... That's an insane number to be going per minute... That's literally 24,000 feet in a minute.

Sonoma County, California.
The fires looks like about 7-8 miles from SE Chico and 99

Fire has now jumped 99 just South of Chico. Friends within the city limits but on the far eastern edge have been given evac orders and other friends that live in the canyon (Butte Creek Canyon) fled a while ago; most in the canyon are pretty sure their homes are gone.

The area that the fire jumped into across 99 (north of Durham) is all fuel: lots of trees (walnut, olive, almond, etc..). What I'm hearing is that they're hoping for the winds to die down around midnight and give crews an opening to start containing it and hopefully build lines to prevent it from getting closer to Upper Bidwell Park which would allow it to really put the city in a bind.

The scary part is they haven't even started fighting it, there is nothing they can really do at this point until the wind dies down.

I just looked up that location on the map - it's ~4 miles from the center of Chico... That's a city of 100k...

Are they evacuating the whole city?

There are no evac's for the Chico city limits at this point. If I was in Chico right now I would be packed up ready to go or already be gone.

Pretty much packed and ready to go. They say it hasn't breached Chico city limits and the campus is safe. If they need to evac and they have to get the hospital evacuated too, I'm guessing it'll be a total nightmare getting out of the city.

Hopefully they'll start fighting the fire soon. I was told they are doing some evacuations of Oroville as well.

Out here in Ventura County with the Hill Fire having basically burnt up the grade out from the 101 to the PCH. Happens every couple years, but the wind today is fucking ridiculous and made it basically a speeding ball of fire. Stay safe out there friends.

If you can leave, leave now. I got stuck in Oroville with my grandma during the spillway incident, just getting to high ground took hours, let alone getting out of the city. Getting out of Chico last minute would be 10x worse.

At worst you lose some free time and have to pay for a hotel.

Stay safe everyone. I hope they start fighting it soon. I'm a little further south but you could see the smoke in the air all day.

At this point they can't do anything till the wind calms down and the fire stops spreading so rapidly. It is basically a battle of attrition at this point.

It is sad but the truth.

The wind is blowing eastward away from Chico and the back burning looks like it is helping so far. Magalia is now a mandatory evacuation. Paradise no longer exists. There are no available hotels from Sacramento to Redding. Live coverage is here:

Reddit Megathread here:

Traffic was back to back last time I checked. Multiple accidents on the road exiting Chico.

Dude, my breathing has been absolutely terrible all day in San Francisco. I can barely breathe.

I wish I would have known of this before. The whole fucking library at my school smells like smoke and burned wood, so, at this moment, I'm about to tell security to make note and set up a air advisory so that that some students can stay home.
