Very happy to be joining the club. Thoughts from first couple of days with it.
Coming from a 1st gen Pro.

  • Great build quality. Love the iPhone 5 style edges
  • Screen is a joy. 120hz plus the increase colour gamut. Gorgeous.
  • Forget the folio keyboard haters. I love it. That + how the pencil connects makes this device feel great.
  • The performance is effortless. It just feels fabulous.
  • 2nd gen pencil is making me use it more. I've bought Notability and I'm using it much more so far. Not an artist, but like to handwrite notes during conference calls and doing some project work.
  • The cable they give you is stingy as fuck. 1m and charge only. Come on Apple.
  • I don't know when I'll upgrade my work MacBook Pro next. I tell you one thing though. I ain't doing it until it ships with an ARM CPU.

I returned my 12.9 inch smart keyboard. Went with one of those Apple bluetooth keyboards and a regular smart folio cover.

Having a keyboard folio was more convenient and the new keyboard felt a bit better than my old one but oh god I hate how the keys face down when the new cover is folded behind the iPad. Considering that I don't use the hardware keyboard that often, I'm much happier this way. And it's nice that you can charge the Apple bluetooth keyboard from the iPad's USB-C port (though you need a USB-C > Lightning cable)

It really is a stupidly beautiful device.
Seriously, it pained me to cover it up with the folio. Maybe in 3 or 4 years when the luster has worn off, I'll be more carefree with it and use it bare. But it's at the top for me in beautiful electronics.

This is why I didn't want to do the smart folio keyboard. Having all those keys exposed is a pain.

Let's not forget that the collection of wallpapers Apple made for this is banging. I'm rocking them on my Watch and iPhone X too lol.

Ordered and did in-store pickup for an 11" and the Smart Keyboard folio. Wow this is great. I used the 10.5" with the Smart Keyboard previously as my work/meeting/note-taking laptop and this feels even better than that. Not only the bigger screen but I like the keyboard folio - that the keyboard turns off when flipped around makes touching the keys a non-issue for me. Love the build quality on both.

Two things I don't like about the Pro:

1. The speakers vibrate the device. Ugh.
2. WTF IS THAT WHITE BAR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN AND HOW DO I BANISH IT TO THE DEEPEST BLACK HOLE?

2. Right? It's there all the time, even playing videos. ugh. I think it's supposed to let you know you can swipe up, but I don't need it on 24/7.

Just realized since I have a 2015 MacBook with the USB ports I can't connect my iPad for Duet with the USB-C cable in the box.

Got my package late last night but didn't think to order a USB-C to USB-A cable. Today after work I picked up a cable at Best Buy then did a quick back-up of the old iPad and restore on the new iPad 12.9". I just need to track down a proper case, the modeI I ordered is great but I can't charge my pencil on the side.

It's there to remind you about the swipe-up thing instead of using a home button. It's kind of infuriating that there's no way to disable it.

Oddly enough, it doesn't bother me so much on an iPhone.

Soo.... how do you turn off the new iPad? I tried holding down the sleep/lock button, but nothing happens.

Edit- Nvm, found a way under the Settings menu :p

So I got mine today and I'm loving everything about it except the black level of the screen. The colors are great but the black bars when watching movies and shows, are more grey than my first gen 12.9 iPad Pro which is very disappointing. It's not a huge difference but I still noticed it right away.

Sorry for the rotated image.

First is in Hulu with True Tone off on the 2018 model and the second is from the TV app with True Tone on.

There's some annoying behavior going on, can't remember if my previous iPad Pro did it (because I already wiped it...), can anyone with the new one try this out?

In a folder with multiple pages, if I go to like the second page and launch and app, if I then close that app back to the home screen the folder is immediately back on the first page. You can even see it changing pages as the app launches.

Gif example: https://imgur.com/a/tLdddlh

This is not how my XS behaves when doing the same thing.

Yeah that happens on both my new iPad and my old 10.5, but only if the folder is in the dock. My guess is that its due to the way the dock immediately closes/resets the folder when you launch an app from it, while the homescreen is more of a background layer that maintains its state.

That makes sense. Because multitasking is weird I have everything on my dock, meaning I have a bunch of folders. Like I said I never noticed it before on my old iPad, but I believe it did if your 10.5 does.

Thanks for checking.

I'm envious of you new 12.9" inch owners. I own a 10.5", and it's awesome, but I'm definitely picking up the new 12.9" next week as this 10.5" is too small for my notes and use for multitasking.

I really want a standard Smart Cover, just so that I can prop it up & protect the screen; I don't want or need the entire thing wrapped up & its design masked; I have a sleeve for when it's not in use.

Unfortunately, there doesn't even seem to be a third-party option at the moment.

That's what I wanted too, but there was no choice so I went with the smart folio. It turns out to be kind of nice to have something that makes the iPad lay totally flat on a surface instead of having the camera bump cause it to be wobbly.

I not actually sure that old style smart covers will ever exist because Apple has move all of the attachment magnets to the back of the device except for the ones for the pencil. I don't believe there are any magnets on the opposite spine. The pencil doesn't show any signs of attraction to it.

since the folios are now designed to magnetize to the back, does the new iPad Pro even have the correct magnet structure to support a "smart cover" sort of design?

So I got my 12" & pencil tonight and it's been great except one thing.

The battery on both drains way faster than my 2nd gen 12" and old pencil.
My battery on the old device I could watch a 30 minute YouTube video and still be 100%. I could browse the internet for an hour and still be 100%. I could have the pencil off the charger for a day and still be above 98%.

On the new devices my iPad battery is down to 95% with just a half hour of web browsing and the pencil was down to 90% after only a half hour of not being magnetized to the side.

Are there any good videos on how it works when hooking up an external display? Does it just mirror the display?

An hour of usage and at a solid 100%?

That sounds more like maybe the battery in your old iPad wasn't calibrated? No device could survive a whole hour of web browsing and not lose at least a single percent...

Also keep in mind that the battery won't normalize for a couple days after just setting up a new device

Is this the go-to note taking app for pencil? Is it updated for the 11'' ipad?

It's got Pencil 2 support, so I would presume they've updated for the aspect ratios as well. It's either this app or GoodNotes that people use. You'll find a fevered fan base for each app.
I note and sketch technical stuff basically and it's perfect for that. The pen is super smooth, then you can highlight, re-size elements easily. It has lined/grid paper templates and icloud sync.

Perfect for my uses.

This thing really is strikingly beautiful. I am coming from a 9.7 pro to an 11 inch so the refresh rate, screen size and other changes are huge for me. The only problem is that a lot of apps need to be updated to fit the new screen. I was reading comixology this morning and it felt like I was using an OG iPad with the amount of black around the sides of the page.

yeah the lack of apps updated is killing me rn

it also seems there are two defaults for unupdated apps:

comixology thinks its a 9.7 ipad and has huge bars

youtube think its a 10.5 ipad and has tiny bars (but bars nonetheless)

books and first party apps are properly updated and have no bats

Anyone have a list of games for the iPad Pro that might show off what it can do or just good games in general? I haven't played many mobile games in the past 2-3 years.

I imagine that NBA 2k game is good to go. I should try that. Everything else I tried wasn't designed for my 11" screen.

Unfortunately, I'm not much of a sports fan. As for the apps being made for the new iPads Pros, I guess the 12.9 inch versions don't have it as bad since the aspect ratio didn't change. The 12.9 inch has very small black frame all around the apps that haven't been updated, but it's not that bad at all.

So, you guys think the keyboard will be more durable than the previous model's? Mine died in a year, and I hate that such an expensive keyboard will only last this long.
