Rotten Tomatoes: 45%
Metacritic: 53 based on 44 critics

THR - Positive
But this new, improved sequel suggests that even when Rowling seems to have gone astray, before long she knows just what she's doing.

The Guardian - 3/5
JK Rowling's creative imagination is as fertile as ever, and newcomers Law and Johnny Depp impress, but the second film in the series is bogged down by franchise detail

The Wrap - Positive
"The Crimes of Grindelwald" is exciting and enchanting, but also frustratingly convoluted

The Telegraph - 2/5
The biggest riddle in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is working out what on earth the film is actually about.

Mashable - Negative
While it is possible, if you squint very hard, to make out some of the deeper themes at play here...the real driving force behind Crimes of Grindelwald seems to be a burning desire to set up a sequel.

Hope its good. Rowling can make excellent stories, but the first Fantastic Beasts had very un-Rowling like issues.

I'm surprised David Yates is still a part of this series. He does not seem capable of elevating scripts.

last one got a pretty middling 60s score on meta too, I enjoyed it though. but I'm kinda disappointed that Farrell is replaced by Depp but moreso that the setting is moved back to UK again. setting it in old America was novel.

didn't realize this was out so soon, in for sure.

I just finished a rewatch of the Harry Potter movies - although I just saw Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 and 2 for the first time ever (save for the last ten minutes of 2 on YouTube many years ago) - and I am ready as ever for this movie. I need to rewatch the first movie before seeing this but I am so excited. I love this universe. Gah!

IIRC it's set in France? Or the next one is anyway, not UK

I don't think will do a formal review, but yeah it's kind of a "middle" movie in that it spends a good part of its runtime setting things up for future installments of the franchise, and really wasn't keen on what they did with Queenie.

But I do think there are several fascinating revelations and curious to see what happens in future entries. And like the first one, I do love seeing fully grown magicians. It dazzles with a creative energy you didn't always get with the Potter films as they were students.

The first movie was enjoyable overall but dragged in spots and definitely needed more Ron Perlman. Newt was also fairly uninteresting as a protagonist. Kowalski and Queenie were the best parts.

I'm still looking forward to this one. The HP world is good fun, but I think it'd benefit from having different directors liven things up. While Yates is serviceable, there's just something in his style that leaves many scenes feeling sterile to me.

I REALLY liked the first one. Rewatched it last weekend for only the first time since the theater (Second time total) and was really blown away by how much I loved it.. more than I remembered.

day 1 on Crimes. Rowling's imagination is incredible.

I think I'm more interested in knowing what happens in this movie rather than actually watching it. A lot of things have just eroded my enthusiasm for it over time and I'll wait for it to hit Netflix or similar

I still think Yates should hand the next films to another director, just for a refresh in style. Plus, giving Rowling a new creative partner to interpret her story and scripts could help regain the magic the novels had.

Sounds much like the first, which there was nothing "wrong" with, but I couldn't detect any real reason the film existed. It just had no identity.

Mashable:
In contrast, Crimes of Grindelwald feels half-assed on every level, from the character motivations to the world-building. There's nothing specific or special about this version of Paris; you'll find a more magical portrayal of the city on any 99-cent postcard. Our returning heroes feel less familiar than they did when they were introduced in the last film, thanks to a rash of baffling decisions.
The real driving force behind Crimes of Grindelwaldseems to be a burning desire to set up a sequel. If only it had gone to the trouble of making me want to see one.

The first one is in the leagues of Jurassic World, Last Jedi and new Ghostbusters for me.

I enjoyed them in the theater but every time I try to rewatch them I can't make it through.

The ol' David Yates magic touch (of pure mediocrity).

Really enjoyed the first one and I'm certainly in for this one without question.
