Random thread to do this in, but a while back on the old forum there would be a monthly thread that was basically "movies to watch" for each month, and ones to avoid. Do those exist anymore? We should revive em if not.
Oh that was done by Expendable through his site TheFilmStage. That site still does it and it's a pretty great look at a wide spectrum of movies releasing. I would make that thread based on those lists if you guys want. We still have the "Movies You've Seen Recently" threads.

Secret Life of Pets 2 trailer, not starring Louis CK

Christ, can't even see if the arts improved or not, looks identical to the first pets 3 years ago.I'ts also a significantly less interesting teaser than the first one was as well. Let's see it score another 60ish on RT then when it comes out.

Oh and look, Grinch has reviews now, oh, once again Illumination has scored in the 60's. Turns out it's pretty hard to screw up The Grinch story beats, but it's still not something you should be making into an hour and a half. Yes, The Grinch really was missing a dream sequence with Max with Mambo No. 5 playing in it, that's the sort of thing this classic story was missing, right Illumination?!

Blah, let's watch it now gross more money than it deserves. Seems like it's just best to stick with the original book or the Chuck Jones animated version if you need some Grinch.

All the IMAXs near me are playing "Thugs of Hindostan" this weekend instead of Overlord. Looks like Bollywood Pirates of the Caribbean.

Might give it a watch.

Overlord is a not great movie. It's too serious for its own good. It's a nazi movie that has zombies in it not a nazi zombie movie.

Venom did over a million on Tuesday too.. Look like it can hit 220 million provided there is no major release in next week or two.

That is, by the way, only a 9.1% drop week over week. Like... what? That's blows away the already very impressive -24.1% week over week drop that ASIB pulled off.

I think it's time to say that people didn't just 'like' Venom, they loved it (though not to the level of the greatest showman obviously). That's WOM and repeat viewings at work. It's like a hex was put on Venom 'haters' so that every instinct and prediction they had only made the opposite come to pass. It's nuts that Venoms holds are only getting better with time, and in such an impressive and competitive landscape and as the competition is only increasing.

October Delivered a Record $820 Million at the Domestic Box Office
by Brad Brevet

November 7, 2018

Another month and another record falls as October 2018 domestic calendar grosses topped $800 million for the first time ever, outperforming last October by more than +47%. Leading the charge was Sony's Venom, but it was a collective effort among several films including fellow October releases A Star is Born and Halloween, all of which topped $100 million at the domestic box office compared to last year, which didn't see a single film generate over $83 million over the course of the month. In fact, this is the first time ever more than one film brought in over $100 million in the month of October as studios continue to find ways to make use of a year-round release calendar.

i don't think 4-5 days hold can be labelled as a trend. when the initial days and weeks drop was in the mid 40s. I don't see it breaking 220M. Which by every means is great.

I always treat reviews coming out of genre heavy festivals like Fantastic Fest with a pinch of salt and this is no different.

Is it very gory? I might check it out this weekend and I'm sort of a puss when it comes to that stuff.

How related to 'Dragon Tattoo' is 'Spider's Web'? I haven't seen the first one, yet and want to know if it's required viewing.

There is a bit of gore. Not a lot of it but there is some.

Bohemian Rhapsody was all over the place. Music was great and the actors did great as well but man the story itself was disjointed and awful. Seeing it in Dolby was nice though.

Nutcracker was meh at best. No other way to describe it plus it was a super fast movie by today's standards or felt like it at least

I hear that they changed the time line of some events which probably made it less cohesive

Grinch is at 63% on RT. Illumination continuing their streak.

Was hoping for a surprise since they had a different writer, but eh. I should had known better.

I'm guessing because it's Illumination, $250M DOM and $800M WW is the floor.

Nintendo chose well.

Oh, but Miyamoto is overseeing the Super Mario movie and it will stick true to his vision or something like that

(That only works if Miyamoto and co. has a Schulz family-level creative control as they did for Blue Sky's The Peanuts Movie. Nevermind fandom complaints about Miyamoto supposedly interfering with Mario stories [Galaxy 2 and Paper Mario entries] as it is...)

boxoffice.com were cowards and didn't post their weekend predictions until today:

Code:
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch $69,000,000 NEW
Bohemian Rhapsody $26,200,000 -49%
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms $10,000,000 -51%
Overlord $8,400,000 NEW
The Girl In the Spider's Web $8,300,000 NEW

It would be a nice start for The Grinch, though I could see Overlord being more frontloaded than The Girl In the Spider's Web and thus ending up under it for the weekend it's not like either is gonna do well.

Hi and welcome to my TED talk "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever is not one of the worst movies of all time... then again the only time I watched it I was kinda out of it and it was the final movie in a 24 hr marathon game"
I'd watch that TED talk if you gave it after just watching Ballistics:Ecks vs Sever as the last movie in a 24hr marathon.

Sony just needs to keep building their characters up

They know for sure now they have 2 solo characters with Venom and Spider-Man that alone can do $700 million and more

I don't think Morbious or Kraven are as liked compared to Venom. I think Morbious is all ready filming so I hope Leto does does a Robert Downey Jr Iron Man performance

Sony is going to have every movie it makes take place in one massive cinematic Universe. Including the valiant stuff.

Checkmate Marvel.

85M would give Venom a pretty good shot at passing The Winter Soldier.

Even with 75M, a total of 700M is probable.

Sony is still lagging on updating the foreign totals with only 13 markets counted past October 28th. Maybe they will feel inclined to provide everything once the weekend numbers of China come in.

Unfortunately the whole thing crashes and burns after the first sequels, so they reboot everything again.

The Sony Cycle

There has never been a more consistent studio!

Aside: In China, Venom ended up or came close to being the third highest comic book movie preseller ever which tracks pretty well to it having the 4th highest midnight.

I heard that berzeli is so impressed by the performance of Sony Pictures under Rothman that he's planning on doing some clothing shopping to celebrate. Maybe a shirt or something.

A Star is born is not likely to overtake Venom, but Venom could be hit harder by upcoming releases. Still, ASIB will need more than out grossing Venom 2:1 from here on out to make up the difference.

(but A Star is Born could get a re-release)

"Venom has 9.4/10 on ticket sale app Maoyan. Best WOM from audience ever for comic book movies at this point. Should be higher than 9.0/10 finally."

That feel when the biggest superhero in China is gonna end up being Venom.

Just fucking hilarious really.

What is it about exactly? Spoil me. Really stopped caring about Cloverfield shit after that one movie on Netflix.

Basically as the commercial said. US soldiers drop down and find Nazis experimenting with bringing the dead back. They advertised it action heavy. Its not. The flick is slow moving. They play the flick fairly serious outside one scene and one character.

It's just an odd ass film. It has zombies and Nazis, but it didn't really take advantage of any of it really till the last 20 minutes and even that was pretty tame.

On Cloverfield, my guess they removed all traces of it after PAradox bombed.

Venom 32 milllion Friday in China. It could have a bigger opening in China than it did domestically.

"Venom is looking to make $32M on opening day. $90M-plus on 3-day debut is going to happen. WOM is very well."

>200M @ China more & more likely.

800M WW would be amazing.

I've seen both. I would say go see The Girl in the Spider's Web over Overlord. Overlord was not a good movie. The Girl in the Spider's Nest was fine, nothing great but ok enough.
Disagree I took 10 employees to see overlord all of them liked/loved it yesterday. Aged 18-22. I'm 39 I'd give it a B+. It's pretty damn good just not a hardcore action flick. More adventure horror sci-fi
