The controllers and ports are standard USB? So the controllers should be able to be used with any standard HID compatible device.

Also could you possibly used a wired DS3 or DS4 to use analog controls with the games.

And honestly outside of only have one save state spot instead of 4 I don't see how this is anymore "barebones" than the NES or SNES classic.

Oh, this would have been a nice workaround from packaging in a more expensive controller that had analog sticks or a fair compromise. Nice idea.

I guess hacking would enable analog controllers like DS3/4 to be used.

Sony had already mastered PS1 emulation more than a decade ago on the goddamn PSP, a platform that by modern standards is only marginally more powerful than a pocket calculator. How did they manage to fuck this up so badly?

90 quid, PAL roms, no scanlines, crap game selection, input lag. It could only be worse if it came with a turd in the box.

Only question is cancel pre order or keep just in case it gets modded, or is super rare to sell on.

Yep, sounds pretty horrendous, was on the fence but have just cancelled my pre-order, just seems like it's a poor mans emulation machine with no effort made for QOL improvements.

This thing has got to be my biggest gaming disappointment of the year... easily. The PS1 is my all-time favourite console, there is no other system I have such sheer nostalgia and fond memories of, but the PlayStation Classic feels like such a wasted opportunity. Based on these articles, it's clearly just some hastily-cobbled together cash grab. I mean, when the full list emerged, my stomach sank anyway - I can't say I'm particularly eager to pay £90 for a device with Battle Arena Toshinden, Cool Boarders 2, Rainbow Six and Rayman on it - but these new details have cemented how lacklustre a product this is. Only one save state, 50Hz version of games, the cruddy interface and general lack of options. Seems like Sony doesn't give a fuck about their legacy enough to do their first ever console justice.

I'll cancel my pre-order, put that money towards a PSVR investment and hope that the hacking scene comes through later down the line. Fucks sake Sony, come on.

Anyhoo, this is a nice quote from the Eurogamer article that made me feel all fuzzy inside...

Having messed around disapprovingly with the menus, I settled after an hour or so on Jumping Flash, that bizarre first-person platformer that has always sat awkwardly, brilliantly, between the soft abstraction of 16-bit games and the more recognisable, harder edges that the PlayStation was about to usher in, and all of a sudden I'm transported back to Christmas Day, 1995, and am filled with that same sense of wide-eyed wonder.

Jumping Flash! felt so ground-breaking back in '96 (when I played it... I think). Where's that VR sequel?!

Can it even get modded? Most PSX games are like 500mb so unless there's a lot of left over storage...

Just a quick low-effort crashgrab from Sony. If you want to play some PS1 titles, just purchase an used PS3 for 70-80€, add 30 or 20€ of credit and purchase the game you want from PSN. If you wait for a sale you will get 10 titles with 30€ or so, but at least you can choose what you get, and on top of that you can also play PS3 games with your console.

Yeah no, I'll stick to my Vita for PS1 emulation. The screen, quality emulation, and access to games not on the PS Classic makes for a much better piece of technology.

And massive LOL @ PAL versions on PS Classic. How do you fuck that up and potentially deliver on 50Hz experiences????

Perhaps modded and stripped of the stock ISOs is the better phrase, I'd remove 95% of the line up. Imagine if their FF7 dump is 50hz pal squash-o-vision. I will relive all of my 25 years ago nightmares.

True story, I had a launch JP model with Ridge, Philosoma etc, but bought the PAL machine at launch around 9 months later thinking no way can they fuck this up with 50hz games, RF out etc. They royally fucked it up and theyre doing it again.

This is disappointing to hear. I was mixed already on the games lineup, though not as down on it as some others. But these hands on are enough to push me to cancel my preorder. What a shame.

You'd think they would at least match Nintendo. They didn't even do that. They did even bother developing a emulator at all, it seems.
Nintendo didn't bother as well on their NES classic the emulator is nothing more than the BSD version of Higan stripped of all of the other cores (so GB / GBC / GBA / SNES)
Same story with the SNES classic it's nothing more than the SNES core of the BSD version of Higan that has been slightly repurposed.

PAL ISOs? Oh dear.

Looks like you need to import the Japanese version to get the one that isn't trash.

This is basically the 2nd repurposing of the Vita internals after PSTV, but with worse emulation apparently and way less functionality than a PSTV.

Forget your Nostalgia, the practical choice would be to just buy a PSTV. They're cheaper than this, they play all the PS One Classics, they play Vita and PSP games and they support DS3 and DS4 controllers.
But but, Tekken 3 and Toshinden!... :(

The PS1 Classic is useless to me considering I can play my old disks on a PS3. The SNES and NES classics were nessesary to me because the original consoles didn't have HDMI and looked like crap on modern TVs.

I don't quite get it.

Imagine if the NES classic lacked all of the SMB games, had Mega Man 1 instead of 2, had zero CV games, and the aforementioned absences were replaced with early gen games like Baseball and Pro Wrestling, and then you'd have what the PSClassic is like.
Not at all, The psclassic has a bunch of great games, yes there are some I wish were on it but it's nothing like the thing your saying.

use the P2 slot for a usb drive. with the emulator being what it is this should be easy to hack. I mean on the snes classic they rigged one up for the power usb slot, this should be a lot easier, especially since it's using an open source emulator

Instead of adding value to the PS4 and making these games playable either by disc or digitally, they invest the resources into this. I just don't get it. Feels like the Sony of last gen.

I feel like they're almost definitely making a revised model next year for about $130 with a better lineup and dualshocks to compete with N64 Classic's enviable release.

Doesn't matter. People buy these shitty mini-consoles in droves just for the nostalgia and "PlayStation" seems just as good as "Nintendo" for Nostalgia.

Most PS1 games are barely sufferable nowadays anyways. Most of them aged way worse than SNES or even some NES games.

This begs the question of what does the Japanese version of this thing look like? Presumably the UI and emulator will be the same but it would seem safe to assume all of the games will use Japanese roms of the games at least, right? This thing sounds so rushed and the fact that it's using PAL roms leads me to believe that Sony's European division is heading up the development of this thing... which would be hilarious if that's true because wasn't it Sony's European boss who was quoted saying something along the lines of "who would ever want to play the original Gran Turismo? ROFL!"

As someone with a Vita TV. If your aim is to play PS1 games the best option would be to get a PS3. I'm incredibly disappointed with Vita TV PS1 performance. It's really weird because PS1 games play great on a regular Vita.

Well the Nes classic was underwhelming and then they made the snes classic and it was already a bit better (still has miles of improvements to receive) .

So Sony going all "me too" at the last minute leading to a fairly underwhelming first iteration is nothing too surprising really ...
How was the SNES CLASSIC better than the NES CLASSIC?
I think both were awesome :)

I think the UI's fine, it's retro. Just the single save file is a shame, is that the same for Nintendo retro consoles?

I wouldn't really say the nintendo classics had a ton of options too, display wise. You got what? 4:3, stretch, and CRT?

The PS classic UI rather, I see what they were going for but it could have been done a bit better.

That says more about you than it does about Nintendo's effort. As PAL gamer myself, thank fucking god they chose not to mess with the PAL version like that.

Let me light your lantern then.

To me the NES classic was about piling up a collection of titles that were genuinely released in my region plus giving us some that never got to our shores.

Okay fine then how about I want to show my kids Contra vs Probotector then ? Can't do that the nes classic has the original Contra but not the Probotector version.

Not giving the option to play both is in and off itself a knock against both the NES classic and the SNES classic.

Now that I didnt know, interesting.

Unless Sony pull the ultimate low blow and secure the hell out of it, compared to the NES mini which I believe had a message in the code about placing roms here.
doubtful, I mean, using an opensource emulator points to it being unsecured XD

have you seen the tepid (i'm being generous here) response to game lineup?

but the games are functionally the same?

I don't understand the decision to release PAL isos, anyway. I mean, italian users here and Sony had no problem on putting on PSN US versions of RE1, 2 and 3, yes they miss the italian language but they come with 60 Hz at least, so they sacrificed the language to offer a better performance. Here they are releasing PAL games but they are not even localized for each country, so you will probably get a game which plays much worse and it also misses your language (in example MGS came with full italian dub).

Sound like Sony doesn't care about PS1 legacy and just want some quick buck after the retro plug & play console rise in popularity.
