Oh dang, I didnt know that. I think I started my life with Playstation a little late. When I first got it, the Dual Shock was already available, and I believe it shipped with our console (I could be wrong, I was young). I have such fond memories of that console, but whenever I tell people about them, they all really seem like downers. Like how we never had a memory card until the PS2, so playing games that were long required us to keep the console on for days at a time.

I really want this thing...but I don't care for a good few of the games. I am really hoping that its able to load other games similar to the snes mini.
Memory cards are the single biggest inconvenience of mid-90s/early 2000s gaming I do not miss at all. I got a Dreamcast for Christmas 99 and GameCube for Christmas 01 and it was the same story both times, stores were completely sold out of memory cards for weeks. Even with the Dreamcast I had to settle for a shitty third party one that didn't have a screen and didn't work properly (Sonic Adventure would only save Chao data for some reason, it wouldn't save anything from the main adventure mode).

Can't imagine how crazy the Japanese launch of the PS2 was, where you needed a memory card to play DVDs. Glad they stripped that requirement out for the US model.

Whoa I never even knew about that for the Japan released PS2. That would have been so bogus. I remember wanting a Dreamcast so bad to play Sonic Adventure and to raise a Chao. I never got one, but my friend at the time did, so I asked for a DC Memory card for xmas so I could raise a Chao (Like a tomogachi) but when I finally got the memory card, he had sold Sonic Adventure. I was so bummed. All of my memories with memory cards have been bad haha

The VMU was a necessity if you wanted to raise Chao too, trying to do it all in-game was miserable. For one thing, the Dreamcast versions wouldn't even display your Chao stats onscreen, you had to put them in the VMU to check, and that was the only way you could name them (the GameCube versions let you do this in the Garden itself).

I don't even know why that memory card was faulty. I tried returning it with my dad but I was terrible at explaining things and extremely shy as a kid, so all I could say was it only saved some data and the Best Buy (or wherever) clerk brushed it off and said it must have been the game's fault. My dog chewed it up three months later and we got a new one - same brand - that worked fine. Forever a mystery. Still couldn't raise any damn Chao though.

Damnit, I can't decide if I want to cancel my preorder or not. The NES and SNES mini perfectly captured my childhood so there was no hesitation at all about buying them, but this list of games doesn't really feel like the PS1 games I had growing up. But at the same time, they're not necessarily bad games, either.
This is me right here.

Maybe this can be hacked.

Solid list, some real gems, and some more niche stuff. Pleasantly surprised at oddworld, syphonfilter and persona.

I'm quite glad they didn't include any crash, spyro, or medievil due to the remakes.
dissapointed that there is no gran tourismo or wipeout tho.

The more I think about it, the more I start to consider the possibility of Sony intentionally doing the bare minimum with this thing just so they could give us the product people actually wanted next year. Then again, this could also just be part of the usual Sony half-assing everything that isn't a main console release.

It would just kinda follow the same pattern Nintendo set with their two Classic Mini's; the first mini-console was more of a "you had to have been there"-nostalgia level of device, selling based on novelty, nostalgia, fanboyism and/or perceived scarcity hype. In comparison the SNES Mini lineup was just one well loved classic after the other, many considered the best in their respective franchises.

With RE1, FFVII, MGS and Tekken 3, the PSX Classic should have the bare minimum to do good numbers. The rest mostly does fall in the "you had to have been" camp at best.

When we get a "Playstation Classic Dualshock Edition" edition I imagine they'll include the latter two games again at least, with FFVII potentially being replaced by IX instead. Beyond that, it should have a majority of titles that people positively associate with the original system. I mean, at this point just including Dualshock poster boy Ape Escape would elevate it over the currently upcoming system.

There's no reason as to why Sony would be incapable or even just not competent enough to to get these old ass licenses. Original controllers over the Dualshocks is just an obvious corner cut to elevate the second hardware release. Twisted Metal makes no sense to include over the superior sequel, unless they're intentionally holding it back. No Castlevania when they got Konami to agree to let them port it to PS4 instead. Hitting up Capcom for Super Puzzle Fighter rather than an actual SF, MvC or MegaMan...

There just appear to be too many instances of Sony not getting what should be relatively easy to get licenses, or not even including their own first party titles. I wouldn't realistically expect a second PSX Classic to be the SNES Classic successor that I was somewhat hoping for, but there's so much better possible here. I still maintain that going that route would be amazing though; Sony managing to snag away all of those amazing third parties away from Nintendo is a major part of contemporary videogame history after all.

The Neo Geo Mini has all 5 Metal Slug games included. Sega has actually dropped ATGames for the Megadrive Classic. Sony literally can't be this fucking stupid...

the lack of Gran Turismo is really weird.

There are more than 700 PS1 classics on the Japanese PSN for play on Vita/PS3/PSP, neither GT 1 nor 2 are available there. Licensing for these games is crazy ,especially 2 with around 650 cars and a few real world tracks. Music licensing wouldn't be as big a deal as the Japanese versions of 1 and 2 do not contain licensed music like the western versions.

It's this. It's the usual " copy thing someone else is doing that is interesting/ successful, but don't really commit the appropriate resources and care".

The inclusion of Revelations: Persona and GTA 1 ( 2 awful games that were only included because of name recognition) tells you everything you need to know about their misguided priorities.

At this point it's the only reason I'm hanging on to it. I'll wait for a week or so after it releases without opening it, and if it looks like it can't be hacked it's going back. The list as-is isn't nearly good enough to warrant keeping.
Personally I think it has a good chance of being hacked quickly, especially if it has a similar exploit to the nes/Snes classics. Although there's plenty of stuff on the built in list I've wanted to try so I'll live either way

It reminds me of some of the characters chosen for PlayStation All-Stars, like DmC Dante and Raiden. Like they completely missed the point of the game.

I know about the other platforms but can't see how Tomb Raider and Wipeout can be seen as anything but PlayStation.
Because, in the case of Tomb Raider at least, PC gaming scene is huge for it. PC has always had the expanded editions of the first three, the Level Editor, and even the infamous mod of nude Raider. Its story is strongly tied with PC. PlayStation is only a part.

I agree it should be on the Classic though.

Yeah, and the same goes for Rainbow Six just because Siege is massively popular nowadays. The device doesn't target (potentially lapsed) gamers from back in the day, it's misguidedly trying to sell archaically dated games to a modern audience that's largely just into cinematic gaming, graphics and e-sports.

Damn shame that no one's trying to take this whole retro gaming thing seriously enough, with the SNES Classic likely to remain the end all be all device on the scene.

its a little weird that it also does not include Medievil. It would be good publicity for the remake i guess (or maybe Medievil 2?)

I don't know whether to cancel or hope for it being hackable
I caved in and cancelled, I would've loved one and there are some big games on there, but I realised that I want one for nostalgia, so to miss the games I'm actually most nostalgic for would make it not worthwhile for me. I would've been happy with just one each from these series: Crash, Spyro, Gran Turismo, Wipeout, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill. It's a shame they're all absent. Half of that is clearly licensing issues and recent remakes but that doesn't make them any less of a loss. I can see the value in it for a lot of people though if the games list aligns more with their taste.

Plan B for me is to start ripping the PS1 games I still have, and buying the rest from Ebay and building myself an emulation box next year.

Is resident evil: director's cut included here, the bad one or is there one with the original soundtrack? That could be the tipping point for me.

Personally, I'm looking forward to both the built in list, well parts, but also hope it gets hacked quick so I can add a bunch of my missing faves. Then again, considering this isn't the first classic console, provided it isn't encrypted heavily it should get hacked quickly hopefully.
As for me I look forward to returning to Rayman, and Puzzle Fighter

Whereas I look forward to playing the following for the first time
  • Battle Arena Toshinden™
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Mr. Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee®
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms
So 16 out of 20 doesnt seem too bad for me

Ya I'm in the same boat. The only games I own in that list is FF7 & MGS, and Puzzle Fighter if counting the real good GBA port. Barring Jumping Flash!, Revelations: Persona, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (all first person games) I'd see myself trying the rest if not also beating a bunch of 'em. Still $100 is steep when you've got the kind of budget I do! Makes me wonder if it'd ever go on sale, since non-Nintendo things tend to do that.

Even if it is hackable you still have to deal with a lack of space and the bad controllers. Hacking a ps3 seems a better alternative to play PSX games.

It's not that much more cheaper. Also the p2 usb slot could be used for memory expansion(a usb drive is an easy choice, you could even use a splitter)

Do all games run at 60hz?

"Oddly, many of the games on the PlayStation Classic were the European versions. When I booted up Final Fantasy VII, for example, I got the classic "Licensed By Sony Computer Entertainment of America" splash screen. But when I ran Battle Arena Toshinden, Grand Theft Auto, or Tekken 3, the screen said "Licensed By Sony Computer Entertainment Europe."

I've just re-read this entire thread. It was highly amusing and totally worthwhile.

My biggest question: Why do so many people seem to have mad love for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2? My memory was hazy so I checked YouTube to see which one(s) I played to death at the time of release - turns out it was all of them! But THPS4 was probably the standout for me. Why do so many rate THPS2 over THPS4?

People were probably sick of THPS by the time 4 came out. I know I was.
