Considering he was one of the few still able to deliver games in time... good move SE!

Continue to give Nomura all the projects, it's doing fine. (as can just one person be on so many big project all on the same time... it's nonsense...)

I'm talking about Square Enix's management in general and, well, he has been a part of all of the projects I listed.

I don't really think that has much to do with the developmental issues of these games, rather logistical nightmares that are unforseen at the start of development for these bigger titles.

And of course mismanagement between teams with the tech crew trying to force engines they spent all this time on onto developers without the proper support or structure. Having KH3 use luminous without letting the developers have a complete engine makes no sense whatsoever. A dev team should not have to switch engines partway through development just to continue making the game. But Osaka team has managed to do it, which is pretty crazy for originally being a handheld developer

For all of those that keep bringing up Nomura, how many games did he direct? Which of those games didn't come out? How many of those cost the company $33 million?

Well this is weird. Why on earth would they let Tabata go? I thought he was their golden goose for salvaging FFXV. It makes no sense.

Man, and I really loved the base FFXV game for what it was.

I was truly meaning to replay it next year, after all the story DLCs were released and after all of the upgraded content the game got. I guess I can safely buy the Royal Edition version now.

It's a shame we will never get to see Luna's and Aranea's story.

My girlfriend will rage so much though. She refuses to play FFXV until a more happy ending is added. I guess this totally kills her hopes.

Ignis DLC already has the alternate (happy) ending for the main story. This DLC was just about fleshing that one more.

exactly don't know the infatuation of this forum to blame Nomura for everything.

maybe because he burned through 33millions like it was nothing.

The situation around this seems unclear and confused, but either way, I'm going to miss this dude:

I hope he goes on to more success.

Really disappointed by this announcement, I have been holding off playing the DLC until it was all out. Now I'll just feel as though it'll never be finished. I know each DLC is it's own story in its own right, but there will still be that lingering feeling of what could have been. I jumped all in on FFXV and got the Ultimate Collectors Edition, OST, Guides, Artbooks. Loved the game. Was hoping that we'd get all this extra stuff. Oh well.

If you are interested, just get the Windows edition, or the Royal Edition on PS4/XB. They are lowering the price of the season pass as well. You can play the game and see, first, before getting the DLC, if you want to spend more money on the story. You will know if the game clicks for you or not. I really enjoyed it, so I'm definitely getting the Ardyn DLC.

It's not "incomplete" and don't listen to haters about this. The story is flawed, but it was fleshed out after the first round of DLC. Episode Ardyn is just extra backstory for this character.

Thanks, hearing conflicted replies to this. I guess I'll finally jump in soon, it's just one of those games I kept pushing off because of the marketing that promises more and more and more. Should be a good one for the Christmas period, got a few weeks off work

I don't know if this has been talked about, but I thought that the eurogamer report added some intresting detail.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/...ts-square-enix-final-fantasy-15-dlc-cancelled

I want to add my voice to this, with what I wrote on VG247: "VG247 has been led to believe that Tabata's departure is a direct result of these shifts at his new studio, and that he was provided with several options for the future of both himself and Luminous Productions at Square Enix and found none of them attractive."

https://www.vg247.com/2018/11/08/final-fantasy-15-dlc-cancelled-hajime-tabata-quits/

I also want to say this stuff was swirling around at TGS - that he might be leaving - as drunken gossip and stuff. At the time I just wrote it off as a load of rubbish, haha.

But I wonder if still will stay on the game industry, or console game industry.

I'm also disappointed, but there is a silver lining: as someone who ended up dropping the game around chapter 6 and was waiting for the DLC to come out before returning to it, at least this means I can pick it up again before 2020. :P

So Nomura is the reason for this thread or is that just bringing him in for no reason?
He somewhat is by proxy, he did screw around a ton on Versus 13, even wanted to make it a musical at some point, until Square said enough & gave the project to Tabata at the last minute.
Nomura is taking like 6 years on KH3, which isn't even open world & FF7R is no where to be seen., the man is a perfectionist i get it, but these days with soaring budgets & long dev cycles, the artist like director isn't viable.

...Definitely starting to think the theories about them wanting Luminous for XVI and Tabata just being too fuckin' Done with that kind of pressure are holding some water

After KH3 is out, square needs to take a step back and get their management in order. I would say after Ff7 is out, but let's not kid anyone, they didn't even start making that game yet.

Wow, next gen looked that bad, huh?

Outside of Square, what's the next big developer that makes big JRPGs? Will he end up at Nintendo and Monolith?

It's already explained but the losses is because of restructuring and cancellation of projects, not because he burnt through money. 33 mil is also not that much for a company of this size.

...that was a joke. dont seriously tell you your bringing that up as some sort of evidence. And the "screwing around a ton on versus 13", i'm gonna need some citations. People make it sound like he was crusing around on the pacific ocean or something when its been established that for atleast 5 years, the game was not even a priority at SE in general for him to have a team to work on it in any significant fashion, especially while trying to re-purpose cystal tools to work in an open world setting without major performance penalty.

People forget that tabata didnt just swoop in and start work as director when FF15 was announced, Nomura was main director and tabata was co director for atleast 1 year and 7 months before we found out that he had left the project. Its more likely that SE split them up to work on multiple projects at once, rather than Nomura just being so incompetent he could not get work done on the game. Otherwise SE would not have put him on FF7R alongside KH3 to begin with.

Wonder if people like me who were waiting for a "complete" game did any damage to future FF15 development or if this is all development woes.

Tabata took the bullet for everything that went wrong with the development of FF15, it's really sad to see the man that took control of a shitshow and managed to deliver something is the one to get axed. Nomura gets to live another day.

Honestly, rather than fighting about Tabata or Nomura, one of the biggests managements flaws comes from SE themselves.

They always announce shit too early. They just can't help it. They did it with Versus, with KH3, XV, FF7 Remake... even with these new DLCs, it's clear that they have shit done for anything other than Ardyn.

I dunno why SE keep doing this shit over and over.

That's what i've been saying for a long time. SE's structural and logistical mismanagement doesnt come from insinuating one or two directors are being lazy or incompetent, thats fan nonsense. Rather the entirety of SE is at fault for failing to work together as a unit and constantly being at odds. Draining management from different teams, mismanaging tech appropriation, its all a clusterfuck if you ask me

Sad news about PC updates being canned along with deeper mod support.

Square is a joke.

They ran Tomb Raider into the ground with stupid deals. Deus Ex is gone. Hitman escaped at least. And now this.

This caught me by surprise lol. Best of luck for Tabata.

I always thought the 4 DLCs are SE's in-house RPG projects for near future outside KH3. Now what are their in-house RPG development?

After Final Fantsy X or XII the Squaresoft-side of Square Enix hasn't been the same. They once started as industry icons. The best of the best, who tremendously helped to make RPG's popular around the world. They've had a team of people who were able to make their visions come to life. Their creative output of high-quality and masterpiece-level like games was absolutely amazing.

Whenever you poped a "Squaresoft" game into your gaming system and the logo came up, you just knew for sure you were in for something truly special.

Then the indutry - slowly but surely - transitioned to more action-oriented, cinematic experiences, which became very successfull and started a trend. In the same time, some key figures of the old Square left the company, and other people stepped up. Soon, Square merged with Enix and from there on they started to follow industry trend, rather than staying true to themselves. The pressure from the instustry and maybe investors was probably very high.

But by follwing instury trends rather than what you were known to do best, Square somehow started to struggle, because they tried to catch up to Ubisoft, Rockstar Games and EA, and eventually ended up in development hell. They tried to establish their own graphics engine, tried to outdo other's on battlefields that weren't their own, and lost of of their former Squaresoft Soul by doing it.

The games they put out weren't what fans wanted and/or took waaay to long to develop. And after that struggle? What changed? Nothing. Final Fantasy VII Remake is already in development hell and who knows if a true Final Fantasy 16 will EVER come out.

Square is disconnected with their fans. The Secret of Mana remake turned out to be an abomination. They should've asked their fans what they actually wanted in a remake. Amd where are all their other Franchises? They are in Limbo. No Final Fantasy Tactics, no Tactics Ogre, no Parasite Eve, no Front Mission, no Chrono Trigger and so on.

The biggest mistake Square Enx ever did was to engage in the Graphics/Action-oriented/Cinematic experiences armsrace that took the industry by storm not long ago.

In my opinion, they should have left the console arms-race alltogheter and shifted their whole business operations to the handheld sector (PSP, DS, 3DS, PSVITA). This way they could have focused on producing successors of all of their classic franchises with budgets they could handle, focusing on quality over visuals - and - they could have avoided being forced to turn their most popular franchises into action oriented, soulless copies of other games.

I'm not sure if Square(soft) will ever get back and track and become their former selves, but this news may be a first step.

This came out of blue, I had some expectations for the DLCs because the previous ones made me care about the characters a bit more and I wanted Luna to be fleshed out more, what a bummer. I really hope SE know what they're doing, with those AAA projects and all because with the way things are managed they sound like another recipe for a disaster.

Monolith Soft should try to pick him up. They're made up of former Square staff as it is.
I hope he goes with them or joins with the Guch. But he did mention he wanted to form his own company, so we will see what happens. This tends to not work out well for people, so I hope he can pull it together and get some projects made.

Is going with Guch supposed to be a good thing? Lol

Does he still make games or just mobile games?

I don't understand this square has always been on the graphics race since day one.. look at ff7, ff10, ff7 concept for the ps3, Agni's philosophy and so forth. the problem with square is after the merger they have become such a mismanaged company and convoluted that is hurting them.

Was really excited to start this game today but no further mod support has bummed me out. Proper mod tools would have made whether they continue to support the game irrelevant.

Not too fussed about the DLC. I only got to chapter 3 on consoles and at a glance the only dlc character I cared about at that point was Ardyn. And I've already got character switching and 5 DLC's to get my head around.

This is like one of those "in this presentation we will dragging the game files to the recycling bin" jokes but actually (at least somewhat) real.

Despite it's shortcomings Tabata still managed to make FFXV into something genuinely quite decent once the DLC and Royal Edition were out. It could have very easily turned into a Duke Nukem Forever-style disaster but, thankfully, it didn't, and that was due in part to Tabata's efforts. I'll be keeping an an eye out on whatever he does next, here's hoping he can get back on his feet quickly.

I'm not the biggest XV fan around but I was curious what he'd make without having to cobble it together with the half finished scraps that the other guy came up with.

Also announcing a stream that many people got hyped for only to del9ver all this bad news is the most Square Enix thing imaginable.
