Announced on the Take Two conference call.

What's surprising is that it is very much a consistent seller. It's the game of the generation with many buying the game when they pick up a current gen console.

For reference. Minecraft is the best selling paid game when combining sales of the Console, PC and Mobile versions with over 150m sold. GTAV is second. GTAV has now sold more than GTA III, VC, SA, and IV combined.

(Tetris technically sold more than both titles when you combine all the versions of the game).

Work
A five year old game has sold more copies this year than most new titles will sell this year. That's insane.

Indeed it's crazy that the numbers are pretty much steady for the last 5 years. Rockstar is on another level.

GTAV won't overtake MC unless GTAV gets ported to PS5 and XB2 without a future title coming into play.

I don't even wanna know what kind of monster next GTA is going to be...

People might actually die when people storm to buy it

Wow, I'm really surprised it sold more than GTAIII, VC, SA, and IV combined ... That sounds dubious to me given the number of re-releases those games of gotten.

Going by the ... all reliable WikiPedia (I know it's not reliable but I have nothing else), those games combined add up to 90,000,000, but I'd imagine that's in their first retail run and doesn't include the double-packs, mobile re-releases, the 360 version, PSN classic for PS4, etc. But, I'm not sure how those calculate in either and if we'll ever get those numbers.

*edit*

Aah, got you, it's just the initial release. Makes sense.

I think the nature of digital games (and backwards/forwards compatibility) is that we're going to see landmark digital games continue to sell long after their initial release. For instance, by the time the PS3 came out, a game that launched in the final year of the PS2 was going to precipitously see a decline in sales... sure it'd still get sales for a couple years as not everybody buys into the new console, but eventually it dries up. With the digital BC/FC future, it smooths this transition over and games have more legs over a longer time.

Increasingly these things become less and less reliable though. For instance, PUBG is listed as the 5th highest selling game of all time, at 50,000,000 units multiplatform, but I'd imagine the number of installs of Fortnite is much, much higher than that, but because of the nature of the two games... one being a sold product primarily making money on the retail sale, another being a downloadable game primarily making money on microtransactions, it'll never truly be tracked.

Rockstar truly are a phenomenon, they operate on thier own terms and consistently smash every successful goal the industry has to offer. They run video games, unbelievable.

Amazing game, still looks fantastic on PC at 4K high settings. FPS view @ 60fps is some good shit whether driving or shooting.

Legit cannot wrap my head around the internet circlejerk stating the gameplay is bad but I love it. Clearly so do many others.

Every time I see GTAV's insane sale numbers, and then see that Minecraft sold 50% more, I realize I don't really grasp how big both those games are. And, unlike Tetris, they are less than 10 years old (10yo for minecraft pre-alpha, 8yo for minecraft 1.0 and 6/5yo for GTAV depending on the gen)

100M for GTA means that one person out of 76 bought the game. 150M for Minecraft means that one person out of 50 bought the game.
(well, not really, those numbers don't mean anything, there is a large part of the world population that does not have access to games and among those who do buy the games, there are many double-dippers (or more))

The highest selling game of this generation is a remaster...

And people say that this isn't the generation of remasters...

That game was never 60$ so comparison isn't really fair
I think that at this point, the price of the game doesn't matter anymore. The important part is that it's not free. But the number of people who would buy a 20$ game but not a 60$ one is too small to matter (well, also, you don't buy GTAV full price anymore, whereas Minecraft, with its rerelease on various console managed to keep a stable price. And the PC price just kept increasing). I might be wrong though.

Mobile and tablets helped the game a lot.
True, but it's also fair to say that only a couple other franchises such as angry birds and fortnite (both free or almost free to play) have gotten so much notoriety outside of gaming in recent years. While GTA doesn't sell outside of games, Minecraft is a monster that is making money in countless industries. In other words, while GTA still monetizes like any other game, Minecraft plays the same sport as a Disney, Star Wars or Marvel product. It'd be interesting to see how much they generate as franchises outside of gaming, probably only Mario is ahead of Minecraft in that terrain right now as far as games go.

Remember is like 2007? when EA tried super hard to buy T2 and Rockstar and talked about how they wanted to make GTA a yearly franchise?

You might have forgotten about that pocket monster thing, but otherwise yeah, you are probably right.

I just blame that awful Crowbcat video.

But I don't really understand it, either.

GTAV on PS4 and XB1 is not a remaster, by any metric.

It is a cross-gen title just like most of the other games that released at the beginning of this console generation. The graphics - including lighting, textures, and many assets are completely different from the PS3/360 version, along with the addition of first person mode.

Difference with GTAV, is that the PS4/XB1 versions didn't launch at the same time as the PS3/360 versions.
