not that there was any doubt, but i think N64 classic will do extremely well in america, specially since it's guaranteed to have 4 of those 5 games included.

Can't see tweets on phone. What happened to the charts like previous threads?

MatPiscatella ZhugeEX can you tell what percentage of the total market the top selling game made in terms of revenue and in terms of unit sales?
Just wanted to see if the sales or revenues are getting concentrated in few titles?

Shows that the release of the PS2 really changed demographics for games in ways that not even the PS1 was able to achieve. Then the Xbox 360 changed it all over again. You can easily see the divide in trends for each generation on the chart.

Odd how the current gen didn't result in a similar change.

While the dominant system changed, the demographics didn't. The PS4 took a lot of the 360 audience and simply gave them more of what they liked.

that's an incredible feat honestly and only unseated twice, once by a gimmick and the other being a billion dollar franchise. incredible, just incredible.

I wonder how much COD Gold Editions helped boost the numbers. Those would count towards this, right? They're not specifically DLC

This is a good question. Was basically 2-4% between 2000-08, since then it's been running 5-8%

Correct. If DLC is sold in the same package as the full game, the dollars are counted towards the game.

GTA beating COD isn't surprising but let's keep in mind that year was the worst Call of Duty ever created.

I'm actually shocked at Donkey Kong 64 being the top seller in 1999.

Sure it was heavily hyped and it included the expansion pak at no additional cost, but I would have thought FFVIII or something else would have been the best selling game of '99.

That's really depressing... Since 2001, the top seller list consists entirely of just 5 franchises (and two of them are completely dead now)

How wasn't Mario Kart Wii the top selling game of the year it released? Isn't it one of the very highest selling games of all time? It's something crazy like 30+ million isn't it?

NSMB Wii?

Same reason why GTA5 isn't on top of the list every year after 2014: just because something continues to sell doesn't mean that it sells the most of any game that year.

Matt can correct if this is wrong, but this is a list of best selling games within those calendar years - not best lifetime sales of games released in those years. Something like MKWii or GTAV would have a considerable portion of its sales outside of its launch year, and those sales would not be counted for the purposes of this list.

Also this is a revenue list, and not units list - so consider Rockband's MSRP back in 2008.

It's interesting that despite the original Playstation's dominance, the top-selling games each year of that generation were from Nintendo. My guess is that it speaks to the breadth of content available on Playstation. Consumers on that platform had more options and may have spread out their spending between a wider range of titles, while N64 owners tended to be more dedicated Nintendo enthusiasts that were more likely to coalesce around the company's signature releases. I'd say that trend still largely holds 20 years later.
On a console like the NES where every publisher and developer was releasing games for it, more than 36% of the games sold were games published by Nintendo.
Nintendo business model is centered around the domination of the software sales on its consoles regardless of the third-party games available on them.
Nintendo is very atypical on this aspect because this is a business model that died out in late '90 (Nintendo is the sole big exception).

It's always weird to read how different gaming section and offtopic section behave here when it comes to top selling entertainment. When it comes to movies people celebrate their big blockbuster super hero movies topping the charts but at the same time on gaming side people loathe games like COD selling so much.

Seems Rockstar is going to prevent a 5 year Activision streak once again

I remember that the opening numbers for the Modern Warfare trilogy were kinda unbelievable.

Remember that year when the whole internet was so mad at COD to the degree that its reveal trailer became the second-most disliked video on Youtube?

Madden (and sports games in general) evolved so quickly over the PS2 era. Too bad that all but died during the 360/PS3 generation and it feels like a rebuild every 2 or 3 years to get features back that were from the PS2 era.

Call of duty, GTA, and Madden. I could've guessed. COD is an absolute monster despite how much you hear people say it's a dying franchise or how "fatigued" it is. All the Madden's on this list are basically the only Madden games I enjoyed, but at the same time these were when I actually cared about the NFL.. so.. I guess that's how it works.
