First, credit goes to Zar-M on /r/diablo for posting this. I thought it was worth bringing over here since this signals a much broader issue than just concerning the Diablo-franchise.

Bascially, from this statement it seems that Blizzard is shifting their focus, something that affects their whole lineup of games, from PC/console to mobile gaming. Now, from comments here and elsewhere regarding Diablo: Immortal, many have been of the opinion that it's just broadening their lineup of games and not impacting the core franchises. If they are indeed moving their best developers to mobile gaming it means that their priorities have shifted pretty hard and it will affect their other games. This seems like a pretty big turn for one of the most well-renowned developers in the buisness.

Link to the the original thread on reddithere.

EDIT: Also credit to Nirolak for this tangent thread - I dunno if the discussion about this should be taken in that thread, but I made a new one not to derail that one.

This is going to piss off so many. I don't give a fuck as I have a phone anyways, so I guess try to sell me on it.

Nothing can be as bad as that Harry Potter mobile game. My standards are low.

I don't like mobile games, have tried a bunch of them in the past and it just isn't for me, so I don't think I'll be buying anything from Blizzard in the future if this is where their product line is mostly going.

It takes them so long to make new game entries in a series that I'm not sure this is a big issue. If you were already waiting for D4 what's the difference between waiting for them to finish an Overwatch or Warcraft III remake and waiting for them to make cell phone games? I can't imagine that it affects the already decade long time tables for a refresh on their existing franchises.

The illuminating answer he gave that most of their devs have switched from playing desktop games to mobile phones is what got me. That means their internal culture has changed and explains so much about why they were so caught offguard at Blizzcon.

Be by far the biggest PC/console gazillion developer in the world - WarCraft, StarCraft, WoW etc.

Shift to mobile and have the C team work on PC/console.

Makes perfect sense to me!

Yes, that is indeed something that struck me as well.

Maybe the developers there who were passionate about PC saw the writing on the wall and left.

Looks like I wont be buying anything Blizzard related for the foreseeable future.

After D3 and this past few Blizzcon's I have no faith in them anymore as a Diablo fan. I shouldn't even say that. As a D1/D2 fan is what I mean.

I see no difference in this from, say, Nintendo making Animal Crossing Pocket Camp between mainline Animal Crossing games. Keeps the name in the zeitgeist, gives diehards some extra stuff, and teams are smaller/outsourced instead of internal studios working on it.

Nintendo's best developers aren't working on Pocket Camp lol.

Actually, if you've been following Hearthstone's development, you'd have very little confidence on their mobile development team.

Mobile games can be fine and even cool. I think they can be an awesome addition to a franchise if done correctly.

But Jesus Christ, shut up about them. This is the worst possible time to say this. Save it for the damn announcement.

While the PC isn't exactly a niche device, it's certainly not covering as large a demographic range as it once did. If they want another enormous money maker like WoW it's probably more likely to happen on cell phones and tablets than on PC while also being much cheaper to produce.

Really quite sad where Blizzard is clearly heading as a company. I get it, the money is in mobile now, but its sad to see my favorite dev go down this path. They're going to lose some of their core audience, but they're willing to sacrifice that to open their games up to the far larger mobile audience.

They've been going downhill for the better part of the decade but it still is a shame seeing one of my favorite devs going down in quality.

Of course, mobile games have it's place. And I agree, the timing is beyond terrible, but it also means one of the biggest AAA giants might leave that arena in the long run.

Holy overreactions Batman.

Blizzard knows the PC/console centric crowd is what's gotten them to this point of success in their history. They're not abandoning it anytime soon. Mobile is just another avenue to generate revenue they want to tap into even more.

25% of Blizzard's revenue comes from PC.

Sshhh. We're not allowed to be rational or optimistic in these threads.

You're totally right, of course.

It's the "many of our best developers" part that makes it sound like they are shifting to mobile though.

Your best devs work at a chinese company doing asset flips on a clone of a game from one of your IPs?

Lol fuck off Blizzard.
