While I think we can question how big a deal they actually are, and whether the potential revelations after making them public will play any part in bringing him down/voting him out... If they weren't bad for him, why not release them? Why lie about the reason for not releasing them?

I think the best case scenario for him is the things everyone's expected (and have already been revealed in part) are true: serial tax cheat, not as rich as he claims, income from questionable sources. Which gives Dems some ammo but isn't going to change many minds among his base.
