How many times would Pokémon be number 1 if we summed both versions? (like it should be done really).

BTW.

To give a quick comparison.

SM64 - 1996 sales = 1.6 million
Call of Duty BO3 - 2015 sales = 9.5 million

Weird. I'm wondering why a Guitar Hero 4 didn't come out. I get they kept on releasing new versions focused on a specific band but for GH3 to outsell the previous versions it seems like the at least worth the attempt for a sequel that offered a variety of different musical artists instead of more of these focused spinoffs.

The late Wii port of RB1 did really, really well. I think FyreWulff mentioned that it was the single best selling SKU of any game in the series.

Guitar Hero 4 was Guitar Hero World Tour- that's the one that added full band support. And yeah, I didn't realize Wii RB1 wasn't day-and-date with the PS2 version in December 07- that explains the weirdness

Now, the weirdest thing to me is MK3 being the best selling game of 1995, when all of the home ports at the time were bad and it's lack of popularity led them to release UMK3 to add back in characters people wanted like Scorpion

So basically since 2001 EA, Activision and rockstar have been passing the baton.

TBF its well deserved. There all great games.

EDIT: US only, id like to see how it changes between EU and Asia. Im sure EU would not have that nintendo domination from 96-2000
Those Call of Duties are okay. Hardly great or deserved

I'm impressed games requiring peripherals like Rock Band are at the top, that's insane. What a craze that was. What competition did they have those years?

Yeah... greeeat list...
At least GTA is holding the fort and RDR2 will be this year's top game.

Nintendo just can't compete with multiplataform in the US. San Andreas was actually the last "exclusive" on that list.

BTW.

To give a quick comparison.

SM64 - 1996 sales = 1.6 million
Madden NFL 07 - 2006 sales = >5 million
Call of Duty BO3 - 2015 sales = 9.5 million

Damn 1.6 mil. That would be nothing by todays triple A standards. Crazy how much the industry has grown.

Those Call of Duties are okay. Hardly great or deserved

Well Millions of people disagree, and there great games. So i dunno what to tell you man.

The Milky Way
N64 was a beast.

Only.. it wasn't. Even the XBO has outsold the N64.

Which makes the Nintendo domination of those first few years particularly impressive.

List is literally trash after 2008 (besides gta v). Why aren't people over shooters yet?

Amazing that Rock Band and Guitar Hero faded so quickly.
People can be expected to pay $150+ for new bundles for only so long. RB was smart to play a longer game with being all in on DLC tracks from day 1 which helped keep it afloat longer. For reasons I'll never understand, Activision never tried that hard with GH's DLC and didn't even bother renewing licenses, so now it's all impossible to get these days.

Damn, the list from 2001 on is a brutal condemnation of the western gaming industry.
Yep, the western gaming industry is terrible because gaming became mainstream and a bunch of franchises got incredibly popular.

These kind of comments are cringeworthy.

Could you give us an idea of the average selling price?

Interesting, if not somewhat predictable, list. Crazy to see Rock Band in there, especially since it came out in 2007 (though I guess the Wii version came out in 2008).

There must just be a huge group of people out there happy to shoot stuff in the same way every year.

Stark reminder to everyone on this board that we are not even close to the core gamers publishers (AAA) are targeting.

Guitar Hero would still be higher than Halo 3 in 2007 by units. Game was crazy y'all.
Wii Play would be number 1 by units in 2008, only just beating out GTA IV.
Interesting, thanks for the reply! Wii Play is kinda unfair because of the included controller IMO, but still amazing to see it top.

Is Wii Fit not counted as a game? I remember when I worked in retail it was the biggest hype ever, people literally lining up outside our store whenever we got new stock and that was a few months straight. Maybe it was a bigger craze here in EU than US.

I'm glad I started gaming in the mid 90s. I realize in a myriad of ways games are better now but there was a certain charm that you felt with some many popular games then. Probably some nostalgia talking though.

Would the list look different if it *included* DLC/MTX? That'd be interesting to see. And yes, it'd be cool to see WW numbers.

Those music games are that popular? Had no idea.
They were. Even me, as someone who fell off the music game wagon after the peak of IIDX/DDR, I got really into Rock Band. It actually taught me well enough to graduate to a real drum kit. They put a lot of care/effort into The Beatles version.

That's absolutely incredible Nintendo 64 games did so well against the PSone. I mean N64 games were top selling games 5 YEARS IN A ROW !!! That's insane !!!

Millions? How do you know? Just because I bought the games doesn't mean I think they are all great or deserve to be the best selling lol

How do i know millions enjoy a franchise that has been the top selling game almost every year for the past 10 years ?

Dunno. Call it a hunch

EA still king in the US.

Makes sense. Activison only releases 1-2 games a year including stuff released from blizzard

Whereas EA releases atleast 2 games including the massive sports games it releases. Last year alone was mass effect, need for speed, battlefront 2 and all the sports games. All multiplatform. And they still sold well despite most being critically poor.

The complete lack of variety in the best selling games is pretty cringeworthy.

Compare that to the 90s where the best selling game each year was a completely different genre. It's a clear move in the wrong direction.

Interesting how the PS1 didn't have the best selling game of the year in any of the years it was out despite being the best selling console.

I saw a list of the top all time PS1 sellers for the US market and none of them sold more than 4 million. A few at the top were at 4 million while most of the big titles were in the 2-3 million range. Sony had a larger yet more diluted market share in terms of software sales, while Nintendo had an insane degree of brand loyalty.
