I'm not saying they're the same by any stretch, but I get Obama circa 2008 vibes when I listen to O'Rouke. He's definitely got that inspirational, appeal to our better angels personality thing going. He's going to have to work on his policies if he plans on running at the top of the ticket, though.

He lost and Trump will constantly harp about it. That's gonna stick.

Its stupid but that's the nation we live in.

Agreed.

He needs a big win to counter this, and not by parachuting into Massachusetts so it's probably 10-12 years before O'Rourke can realistically run for President.

I do think, however, that he can be of great help to the Democratic Party nationally. Coming that close in Texas suggests that he knows a thing or two about how the party can appeal to voters in deep-red states.

People dismissing his loss because TX is a red state like you didnt see a black candidate win a white nation 10 years ago.

I like Beto.

I just think we don't want to rely on him as the savior to take down Trump when he can't even beat Cruz, even if it's Texas.

I mean is the bench that barren?
barren perhaps but the biggest thing going for him is that Beto was able to capture people's attention from all over the United States, you have to give him that compared to anybody else

"He lost"

Are y'all stupid? He barely lost red ass red Texas and helped HUGE downballot getting us some districts for Pelosi.

Count me in on the 2020 train.

People crying that "he lost" must remember where he lost in.

He lost in Texas, a very red state by a small margin. He has more appeal than any of the aspiring Democrats right now to be honest. He's very inspirational.

Devil Halton's Trap
I think he's too tied to Texas in some ways, but he could run well as a veep for some other candidate unburdened by a pyrrhic loss. More importantly, his campaign's a strong example of 2010s U.S. grassroots politicking and voter engagement through registration. Those high numbers for youth turnout tell me something's working! I agree with others that Beto's rather wimpy, though he's got some nice liberal/left-of-center platform points that could go somewhere. And we got downballot victories here thanks to him; I'm really glad to see Collin Allred oust Pete Sessions for good reasons.

Still, it sucks that if he runs, Trump's going to rail on his loss for a million gorillion years. Must be nice to always win because you constantly destroy everything around you without dying yourself.

He's a bit soft for what I want in the next Prez. He backpedaled on calling Cruz a liar. I need someone who won't apologize for slapping craven bigots around.

I think he should definitely run. He has many characteristics that appeal to a wide demographic. The fact that he came so close in Texas is amazing.

Hillary wins the popular vote against an unpopular candidate: Go the fuck away!

Beto loses against another upopular candidate: Dem nominee for president 2020!

I wonder what the difference between them is. Hmmmmmmm....

I think it'd be best for him to wait until the next Senate race in Texas. If nothing else, this result has entirely legitimised him in a State that has been dyed red for so long, and so he would have an even greater chance next time.

I wanna believe, but I think people underestimate just how unliked Ted Cruz is in general. A lot of Beto's performance today has to be pinned on his opponent just being a total worm.
I don't see Trump losing after tonight no matter the candidate tbh.
I think Florida might be an actual toss-up with the voting restoration for felons. Also, with Hillary not being back in the ballot, I expect a lot of independents to go back blue in general.

"He's a loser" is the dumbest shit I've read tonight. Get your heads out of your fucking asses. I don't even care if he runs or not, but he got almost 50% of the vote in Blood Red Texas. That's more than Hillary Rodham Clinton and it bodes well for a national candidate. If we judged every candidate by how they would do in the worst circumstances no Democrat would EVER win.

This is pretty much moot I believe as he has said straight up he won't run rather he won or lost and I expect he's gonna stick to that.

Who the hell cares if he lost against Ted Cruz. It was a senate seat in Texas. In his prime Obama wouldn't have won that.

Lincoln suffered a loss before winning it all. Why not Beto?

Not that I think Beto is out best bet-o for 2020 but are the people here lamenting he lost by a razor thin margin in TEXAS thickheaded?

This is not a zero sum game, contrary to what Trump would like you to think.

You can take the flip side to that too. Trump won with 52.6% and Cruz won with 51%. That's with Cruz being far more dis-likable to that base.

An endorsement based on "personal brand", "energy", "speeches" and "command of the room" with nary a mention of policy, experience or action in sight.

Yep, sounds like American politics in 2018!

To be fair that's like the exact opposite of what Hilary brought to the table and what Trump won with.

That simply isn't how it works.

Cruz barely beating him in Texas is not telling of his chances against Trump in two years. It's just not. Those results do not reflect the country as a whole and the voting demographic two years from now.

Beto doesn't need Texas to be president. If he is this close in Texas he has a good chance of taking southern states like Obama with Florida and North Carolina in 2008.
