People shouldn't be so negative, Dems are winning the popular vote by 9% in a midterm (when they usually do worse). In 2016 Hillary won by 2%. If Democrats do this well in 2020, they win the presidency. States where Trump beat Hillary but Dems won big tonight- Michigan, Pennsylvania (still waiting on Arizona and Wisconsin). Florida was extremely close as usual and with the law allowing ex cons to vote in 2020 it'll be a big boost. Texas and Arizona voted more Democratic than they have in a long time. If demographic shifts continue could be even better in 2020.

Missouri, Tennessee, North Dakota and Indiana (states where Republicans won competitive Senate races tonight) were going to be unlikely for Democrats to win in 2020 in a presidential race anyway. If Democrats hold on to 2016 states that voted for Hillary and add Pennsylvania and Michigan where they did well tonight and have historically done well in plus one other state (Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona or North Carolina) they win the presidency.

Nationally Democrats did much better than Republicans and better than they did in 2016. They lost in the Senate mostly in a bunch of states that voted for Trump in a big way.

What's Beto's future now? I'd like to see him stay relevant. Anything else besides presidency?

Now I'm wondering what Kander and Buttigieg are up to.

I'm going to be honest. There's nothing impressive about Democrats winning the house.

I'm honestly a little surprised how terrible they're doing in statewide elections.

Don't get me wrong, Beto had a fantastic run. The turn out and support for him is a sign that progress is happening in Texas. But it's still a long way from flipping. He wasn't going to win.

If he couldn't beat Ted Cruz now, no way he can come back in two years and beat Trump. You're delusional and way too hopeful if you think he could pull that off

Not being able to beat Ted Cruz (barely) in Texas in no way reflects his chances against Trump country-wide.

Pretty limited options. He can take a shot in a very crowded 2020 field against people with way more name recognition... or he can run for House again in 2020 (Senate won't happen).

Those same voters would nod in agreement with Trump about shooting children immigrants and asylum seekers for "throwing rocks"

Yep it's why the single issue abortion voter never sat right with me. It shows someone who can't mind their business and isn't even consistent about not minding it.

(Also I always flew into a mini-rage when those pro-life douchecanoes would try to give me the baby doll thing outside planned parenthood. Like you really have nothing better to do with your life?)

That said on another note I really wish Beto had won ;_;

Yeah DeSantis is a shit stack. I really do think if we had chosen our moderate establishment candidate we may have gotten more Republican and independent votes. Democrat votes were probably already energized in any case of a centrist candidate.
I agree, Florida is too evenly divided to rely on energizing/rallying firm democrats, we need moderate appeal.

That might be enough for much of the midwest.

That's more than enough for the Midwest.

That or starting a war.

That seems to be the only things you need.

Yeah not saying I'm not worried about that stuff. They didn't bite on the caravan stuff. I don't believe the Midwest is afraid of Mexicans or cares about a wall. He'll need to come up with a new evil plan.

100% this. You want people to believe in democracy, then patronize the voter with political "strategy" (that often doesn't even work), and then further call the voter "uneducated" because they want their representatives to have backbones and to stand up to the fascists. Wonder why they don't vote? That's why. They know nothing changes. The average person's life sucks, it's work all day, come home to bills they can't pay, struggle, and then their body fails them and they lose their house. Shit needs to change. Nudging the ball forward from the center line doesn't do much for them.
You need to realize that we need to reach that center line, before we can even think of starting to nudge the ball. Politics, are continually gradual, and people dislike change.

We need to wait for more of the old racists to die off, but here is an undeniable fact.
Mexicans, African Americans, and other demographics are minorities.

Within a democracy, where the majority of the population decides what policies to enact, and what leaders get put into power, minorities inherently and fundamentally do not have as much power. And with demographics like the 12% of African Americans, and about 6% Mexicans. Well..... that is very very low power by those races alone. Fundamentally, Caucasians have all of the political power if they so choose. If they all vote together, there is nothing a minority can do. Even if half of all the Caucasian's don't even bother voting, there is still nothing a minority can do. That simply is a part of a democratic system, like it or not.

So, with this in mind. The only way that things are going change things is to change enough of the minds of the majority. We have had progress today. But in order for things to actually change, the following must happen.
1. It needs to be demonstrated that equality for everyone is beneficial for everyone(basically saying that equality is good even for caucasians'
2. Policies and economic policies should help everyone in the lower to middle classes. Basically, do a reform that benefits everyone including all minorities.
3. Compassion for other people must be in full display, in which people are seen as people, and not how they look like.

I really wish it weren't the case, and these things should speak for themselves. But that convincing for everyone, simply hasn't been happening. And that is never going to happen under republican rule. So, we need to go straight center, at least for now. We need to stop the economic anxiety, and get everything nice and well. Then gradually introduce these ideals and continue all of these movements. It's going to take a while to sink in, yes. But the fact of the matter is: would you rather go centrist Democrat, or far right? We have to walk before we run, and it's going to take America years to recover from this hell hole. And given the choice of slight progress, versus children being in cages. Well..... We should all be shooting for kids not being in cages. Or at least I do.

My district in Illinois did its job well, and we got Rauner out too. So this really is a well earned victory(at least in my state's part).

And I wonder why MN wants to be called "the north" instead of being part of the Midwest...
You're cool.

What are you talking about? A charismatic, if somewhat boring incumbent R squeaks by, but most of other state offices go hard D and the congressional delegation goes from 3R-1D to 3D-1R with the one R left standing having withstood a serious contest in a district that ought be a cakewalk. Looking through the state level races, the R's appear to be seriously underperforming there as well. That's la la land?
You're right that I was being pessimistic, but the state's leadership still feels completely dominated by Rs who want to gut workers' rights like a stuck pig.

Kander recently announced he's taking a break for mental health reasons, which really sucks. He was to 2016 was Beto and Gillum and Abrams were this year: a great young Dem in a crazy hard race, who almost pulled it off. Not sure on Buttigieg. As for Beto, I've made my opinion on him pursuing higher office known. I honestly think the most likely scenario is he retires from politics, but if we're lucky he takes another stab at Senate in 2020

He's still a representative. And now part of a house lead by his party.

He will no longer be in the House as of January.

Same, tbh. Didn't think people could possibly stand by Republicans these days.
I thought after Bush2 we'd be done with the republican party. Outside of Obama, and the win tonight, the republicans are stronger than ever. This country is not a union, but a dysfunctional divorced family that keeps going to court for custody of the kids.

i don't think waiting for the old racists to die is an option anymore. you need to focus on the young fascists, fast. stop acting like they're a joke.
