Grand Theft Auto V has pretty much anything I could want in a game. There's a reason it still shows up in top ten best selling lists five years after release.

I'm not even a primary nintendo fan but I would have to go with either super mario galaxy or Metroid Prime. There is very little about them that could be improved - moment to moment gameplay, new gameplay mechanics introduced constantly, visually gorgeous, amazing music, art design... incredible.

Shadow of the Colossus might be my favourite but it could hardly be seen as meeting any criteria for perfect.

Nice detailed analysis, gang!

Agreed it should go without saying but to be fair the OP does not specify.

It's probably been said multiple times already but Metroid Prime is the closest I've experienced as the perfect game for me. Graphics/art style, gameplay, world, and even story (if you take time to read the chozo and pirate logs) is great. Fantastic game and just the right length too.

Journey

I've played many great games but Journey is the closest to perfect I can think of. Can't think of a single thing I would change... maybe length? Nah... it was just right.

INSIDE

Flawless execution of what the developers wanted to do. Animation, level design, sound design, graphics, narrative. All perfect.

All of our choices will come with an inherit bias, though it shouldn't matter barring any fundamental flaws.

I have a few choices, but I'll focus on Half Life 2.

I really love the pacing in HL2, the story doesnt hold your hand and allows you to discover it in the small details too.
The physics and graphics at its time where groundbreaking and i think it stands the test of time.
Finally, the combat is satisfying and you can go about it using the gravity gun, or traditional weapons.

After playing astrobot for a few days I'm inclined to say it's up there with the "perfect" games.
It's just a joy to play!

Halo 3. If they could remake it with Firefight, and Halo Reach's art style, it'd basically be perfect.

Portal 2.

It's not my favorite game or anything...not by a long shot, but once I finished I just couldn't put my finger on anything wrong with the game. It was just so good from start to finish and there was nothing about the game I would change.

Ico for me, it's only my #3 all time favorite but it doesn't have any clear flaws like Majora's Mask(Gyorg, underneath the well) or The Last Guardian(the button prompts, the narration at times, a few clunky camera angles). It is the purest of Ueda's games, the one that holds truest to his design by subtraction method. I think what really seals it is that all of people's complaints about the game, like the combat and movement of the character, are all positives for me as they fit the game. Ico is an untrained pre-pubescent boy, not some skilled warrior. It's a perfectly told tale.

RE4 comes the second closest to me. Saddler was overall disappointing though as a final villain and the island wasn't quite up to par with the village/castle outsode of the regenerators.

No such thing as a perfect game. Any game can be better, even if only slightly.

Edit: well, the title does say "nearest", I guess. Can't think of any game that is near perfect, though.

The Witcher 3 is my favorite game of all time, but it has too many glaring flaws to be considered near-perfect even if the overall experience taken holistically rises above them.

I will say Bloodborne, with the DLC I honestly cannot poke any holes in that game (other than nitpicks) aside from the technical performance at times.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. I mean, you have to accept it as a game of its time, but there's honestly nothing I'd change. The soundtrack is amazing, the game is pre-reverts so it's more challenging to get massive combos, and it just feels the best out of all the Tony Hawk games- it's perfectly curated, without the bloat of the games that followed it.

As an overall well-rounded package of excellence with few if any flaws: Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

  • One of the best stealth campaigns ever with incredible level design and game mechanics allowing for a high degree of player expression.
  • Substantial co-op campaign offering pretty much the same qualities.
  • A continuation of Pandora Tomorrow's unique and excellent multiplayer.
  • Bleeding-edge graphics for the time.
  • Music composition that is top-tier even today.
  • Well-written character dialogue.

If Nightmare of Mensis first part didnt exist and framepacing issues didnt exist I think Bloodborne would be the closest a game has ever came to perfection.

I also dont like the sewers in Yharnam so take that off too. Keep Nightmare Frontier for its amazing artstyle but I dont think it is a good area.

There is no flawless game but I would pick these three I suppose:

Gothic 2 - a bit janky by today's standards but in 2002 the combat was pretty forward thinking
World of Warcraft (vanilla) - class design had some notable flaws and some raids were way too easy but otherwise it's a damned gem
Resident Evil 4 - The controls are very tank-like but the game is designed around that so I don't mind it as much.

My Top 3 games of all time but none of them are perfect. In fact, nothing in thing world is perfect (or near perfect) in my eyes:

1) Castlevania - Symphony of the night
Flaws: Wrecked balancing, nonsensical item placement

2) Bloodborne
Flaws: Chalice dungeon progression grind, insight idea half-realized, stats imbalance (too much on strength and skill)

3) Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Flaws: That wrecked beyond believe third person control with that multiple button press, some scenes too 'anime' for me even as a Kojima fanboy, cumbersome menus, food system is unnecessary.

People already said stuff like Mario 3 so I'm gonna mention Super Hexagon.

It's the definitive mobile game. It takes a second to launch, touch screen is great for playing it, you can play it at the bus stop for literally three minutes and it's gonna be a great time, graphics and music work very well, I guess pretty much all the smartphones on Earth are able to run it.

So yeah, it's great, dunno what I would change.

Horizon Zero Dawn.

Anything and everything it gets very close to perfection masterpiece. Story, characters, atmosphere, gameplay, controls, visuals, sound, music, length, exploration etc., and many other intangible qualities.

The only thing where I could argue that it may lack is that it doesn't take a lot of risk.

Super Metroid

Only problem I have is that it's clunky to switch to stuff like the X-Ray Visor and the Grapple Beam.

I am still amazed how inventive and well-made Punch-Out is in a pure gameplay/mechanical perspective. Everytime you dodge and dance with a boss, check your stamina or stress at a timer, look for a power up opportunity, wait for a boss specials/enrage - all of this come from this game, in the third-person view. Exactly like you can someway reduce a lot of infiltration/survival game mechanism to Pac-Man.

Not a game, but the 2D gameplay of Mario.

That thing is perfection. They add and change a little, but it's perfect since 1985.

This is a really good pick. One of those games that succeeded completely at being everything it was intended to be. I enjoyed it a lot, but, like you, it 's not one of my favorites. I think I need a game to have flaws (sometimes massive ones) for it to be really memorable and top my list.

The Last of Us

I loved the
  • Story
  • Characters
  • Crafting
  • Looting/ Scavenging
  • Combat/Wepaons
  • Enemy Design/Encounters
  • Brutality
  • Graphics/Locations
  • Great Multiplayer
  • Amazing DLC

I played this game so many times and I still enjoy every moment when I'm in this world.
