A top FIFA pro has been banned from competitive play after he was caught using a homophobic slur in a video

Tassal "Tass" Rushan, a FIFA European Champion from London who plays for well-known esports organisation Faze Clan, published a video to YouTube in which he called a virtual FIFA Ultimate Team card a "fag".

Rushan was upset at repeatedly packing Matías Vecino, a Uruguayan midfielder who plays for Italian club Inter Milan, from Player Picks packs.

"And just like that we're seeing this fucking fag again," he said.

This quote drew the attention of EA Sports, which has now suspended Rushan from FIFA 19 competitive play for an undisclosed time.

In a video published to YouTube, Rushan claimed he didn't know the word "fag" was a homophobic slur because he's from London.

It's a very unfortunate, unintentional misunderstanding from my end," he said.

"Due to where I've been brought up, the connotation of that word from my perspective until now, it was just another word for prick or idiot. Not even one per cent of me knew it had any type of derogatory connotation towards homosexuality at all.

"First of all, if I knew it did, there is no way I'm saying anything like that. I would never say anything like that, trust me.

"I think some of you guys could back me up on this. Who's from London? Did you know that word had that connotation?"

If he had apologised then fair enough. But he clearly went to Pewdewpie defence school because there is no way he doesn't know the meaning of the word. Everybody from England knows what it means. His defence is embarrassing and laughable. Should have just apologised.

Fag isn't always used in a literal sense here but I guess you could say that about any slur. Doesn't seem like much of an excuse.

He knew exactly what it meant. He either meant that, or he was calling it a cigarette. Which he wasn't. Everyone in London is aware it means far more than "prick".

But no.

Absolutely not.

There's no way he didn't know what he was doing. There is no connotation between the slang for cigs and what he was saying. We all know that it's used as a slur so he's bullshitting attempting to come from a place of ignorance so he can get away with it.

I mean I could see it because shitty children are shitty children and never actually learn this kind of thing. But like the way they used it means they knew. The word is definitely way more of an American thing.

maybe it was Halloween..? and he thought his opponent was wearing a cigarette costume?..

I don't know.. it is pretty farfetched.. but so is his "defense".. .. he is banned, and hopefully he will stay banned.

What. Yes, people refer to cigarettes as 'fags' here in the U.K. But let's not pretend that there isn't another use of the word which everyone knows about and why the hell would he be falling a FIFA player that he didn't want a 'cigarette'.

Fag is used as slang for a Cigarette.... I have never heard the word fag used as a slur against a homosexual in the UK ever and I'm 34. But I absolutely know that it can be (and is) used online a lot.

So I do believe he probably hasn't heard it used in day to day life, But don't believe he has no knowledge of the word and use in this context.

He knew exactly what he was saying, and if he didn't why even use that word... there would be no reason to use the word "fag" he didn't know of it's context.

I know the general jerk is EA BAD, but this is one thing EA is very good at and consistent on. So good on EA... it's not often I say that.

I can't honestly believe that. Maybe it's a generational difference, but I've heard gay people called fags hundreds of times.

Correct me wrong, but even though fag is one of those slurs that is univerally known as an homophobic insult, why this player though that excusing himself from being of London of all places would mean that he didn't really know about the meaning of the word? Like, the have other way to insult gays or he somehow though that using the excuse that some no english speakers use to excuse the insult will somehow work here?
