I'm tired of having to manually switch to the damn binoculars then press O to put them away. Most games its already assigned to a face button. This thing with the binoculars is hella annoying especially since hunting can be one of the biggest parts of the game. Same with masking up/off, I shouldn't have to go into my menu just to put it on or take it off, just assign that shit to a button or combination of buttons. I dislike having to open something and continuously press the "loot" button until he manually picks it all up. Just loot all that shit OR...bring up a small menu of all the lootable things and let me choose what I want. Just a few main gripes in this department but there's more

Also, all these extra animations to do mundane things starts to get old and repetitive. The game is nice and all but I don't want to watch me picking up stuff until its literally gone, skinning some animal, or picking plants and watching him strip the leaves or bulbs and place it into his satchel. EACH and every time.

We get it. Y'all thought of everything, animation wise. Just let me play the damn game man.

UPDATE: Gonna post this here since I said this later on in the thread. Don't want it to get drowned out in all the conversation
Overall though....I don't want to ruin someone else's experience if they are enjoying all these things, they're just my personal gripes. Like I said in the first post, I still like the game and plan on completing it and playing online.

But I would LOVE the option to cut some of this stuff off. If R* can come through with a patch that lets you cut off lengthy animations and do something about the ammo/arrow crafting and all will be well in the world.

The menu system and controls in general are a hot mess that it seems many reviews glossed over because everything else in the game was really well done.

I think the biggest nuisance in the game is the lack of analog running and the need to continuously press A just for Arthur to run. It's especially annoying in camp when you can't even run to begin with.

Eh, I think it's good that we have some games to do immersion this way. Obviously not every game should attempt this but it's nice to have one that did, I'll let it slide.

I don't mind it, I feel it jives with the slower pace of the game in general.

I agree with all of this. My biggest gripe with the game is everything being a long drawn out animation. Makes me hate hunting, having to watch that long gross ass skinning animation for every animal almost.

You can change the running controls in the options menu. You can change it from holding X/A to toggling X/A to run. You still need to tap X/A to sprint but you only have to tap it once to get Arthur moving faster. Which also lets you control the camera while you're running.

Once I got used to it I quite like it. I don't need every game to be this way, but I enjoy it in RDR2

Yeah, Im struggling to turn the game back on, as the story has even got a little boring to me. Does it pick up? Im at chapter 4 if I remember.

No. They should double down on animations. I'm bummed that some animations aren't as detailed and cut in between like skinning large animals.

Assigning that stuff to any of the buttons is easier said than done, considering a lot of the buttons already have completly different functions depending on whether you press or hold it due to feature overload. You get used to it fairly quickly though, if you let the controls into your heart.

For the love of me, I still haven't understood how the weapon inventory works, especially with the horse. Also, why do I have to do two button presses to loot a chest?!?

My only real issue is that the control scheme is a little all over the place, but I love all of the meticulous animations for simple tasks.

The replies in this thread range from honeymoon phase to videogame expectations. Rockstar games usually fall somewhere in the middle after the day 1 hype smoke clears. I can't wait to see how people mod the PC version(and then for the diehard fans to claim how removing the skinning animations ruins immersion).

Why isn't push to run mapped to L3?

Was the need to stand out from other games that important at Rockstar, that they decided to ignore the L3 button altogether?

The story gets better with each chapter imo. You've got the best yet to come.

I wish I could have this game removed from my memory so I could experience it all for the first time again, haha. Such a good game. I do agree with the buddy who's shouting at you to follow them when you're looting etc. Sometimes I'm picking out weapons in my saddle bag, or I'm healing up or whatever, and they keep telling me to get a move on. That shit gets annoying and I wish it wasn't in the game.

I get the immersion factor. I've played many games were you just mindlessly rush around and pick up stuff without a second thought which is also as mind numbing as a longer animation you've seen too many times but at least it's time to soak in, your sort of on autopilot most of the time when it's instant gratification and Rockstar probably goes against that on purpose.

Hate it too. I was hoping RDR2 was going to be a better RDR, more variety, better missions, more fun... But it just feels like the same thing but now with more moving parts. Nothing is straight forward or simple. It has stages and processes and tasks to achieve what once was immediate and easy. It stretched what could be deemed "fun" in the first game (herding cattle *snore*), but now a lot of its gameplay is litterally made to be a chore.

Its everything I hate about R* games and open world games in general all cranked up to 11.

I know a whole heap of people like that sort of thing. But it's not something I'll really understand myself. It's just easier to shelve it and play something better.

I understand how some might feel that way but I feel the complete opposite and I'm so happy Rockstar made it the way it is.

It's insane how this game came from a AAA dev with how methodical it is in ever aspect and yet Rockstar is really the only developer out there that CAN make a game this meticulous.

I just sat on my horse watching a Coyote stalk a bird for 5 minutes straight.

I definitely could do without pressing the interact button and waiting several seconds for Arthur to get positioned into the magical snap point that allows the elaborate animation to even start playing.

I mean come on dawg, its was cool at first...it was like "damn they animated ALL that? That shit like real life"

But after a while or sometimes if I just wanna pick up the game and do a quest or two and hop off, these little interactions and things slowly bogs shit down

Disagree 100%. The animations make the world so immersive. This isn't supposed to be a video game ass video game. It's supposed to be slow and methodical.

Definitely need a loot/grab all items option. You don't go robbing house and take items slowly one by one do you?

Made it feel more video gamey for me

I got used to most of the animations eventually, despite strongly feeling the "immersion" wasn't worth the tradeoff.

What made me actually annoyed was when they lowered your walking speed to 50% and sometimes 25% in a few zones like camp and in some mission segments, where it adds literally no immersion, just frustration and tedium.

I hope most reviewers discovered that this is a non-issue because of the control settings.

If it hit's pc, I can't wait to see it edited with mods. I will require it. Though I'd require a lot, something like Skyrim level mods to fill the empty space, oh and dial down the wanted system to let me at least enjoy doing stuff in remote locations without invisible witnesses.

It's actually driven me back to Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Redemption is just a total chore to play

There should definitely be a button you can hold to skip the skinning animations, not only do they take far too long and get very old after a while, but they're realistic enough to be a bit unsettling. I honestly don't like seeing the intricately detailed insides of animals being sliced and gutted constantly. I'm literally stoked when the animal's in a weird position and the game just skips the animation and gives you the pelt.

I really hate the messy weapon inventory system. I miss RDR1 in that regard. No annoying limitations, just pure fun carry as much as you want

I'm gonna have to agree with you OP.

The game just feels slow, and it's too long. The animations really get old after awhile, and make me not want to loot or skin things anymore. Red Dead would be perfect as a 20 hour game, not 40-60.

I'm honestly shocked this game hasn't been more divisive among critics. Even many who liked it have said they weren't enjoying it as much early on. Right from the beginning I've been of two minds about this game. I'm only a few hours in but find myself intimidated by its size and systems. It's not something I can just jump into and play like most games I like.
