I can, Arthur can't. RDR is the jankiest game I have played in a while.

No clue why R* went back to GTA IV in terms of controls and general feeling. People hated that back in the day and R* clearly back paddled in GTA V.

RDR2 is a bit of a mess in a few ways. Can't remember a Dev having to explain their game on Facebook because of the total lack of in game tutorials and explanations.

Have you actually played it? The game has plenty of tutorials and explanations and most of that list is told to the player in the game.

Red Dead. But either way, the real game of 2018 (Fortnite) will get robbed.
It came out last year and is still in beta/early access according to Epic.
Fortnite is the game of 2018 though, it went from very popular to one of the biggest games ever, but it's not getting robbed, though if it is so is Bloodborne.

It's hard to predict how this is going to go. I think people forget when god of war came out how hard the media went in with crazy hyperbole about it just like they do with Rockstar games. Then again maybe the media forgot that too by now, who can say?

I think what will end up happening is RDR 2 probably wins a little more on the critic side but user votes will push GoW ahead in the overall goty count. Similar to what happened in 2016 with Uncharted 4 beating out Overwatch.

Yeah the media loved it. It gave birth to this meme too

The cringe.....

RDR2 will take more GOTY's, and it deserves it too.

God of War is pure art and a turning point in the maturation of the medium. It's honestly the Citizen Kane of video games.

RDR2 most likely given the slightly higher review average. Both will win plenty though, as they should as they're both masterpieces. Myself, I'd give a slight nod to GoW currently, but I'm only on Chapter 4 of RDR2 so that could change.

Can't tell if serious. It's a really solid action-adventure, but I wouldn't go this far. From an art and storytelling perspective I'd say it's about on par with a Naughty Dog game.

RDR. More recent and doing pretty crazy stuff on a system level.

Fully expecting GoW to win on reset though.

God of War because it is a gamey-ass videogame, RDR2 feels like the GTA4 of this generation and is a game that will not hold up well in 2 months let alone in a year.

I hate that kind of hyperbole for any game but GoW got closer to earning it than RDR 2 did for sure. One is actually fun to play and doesn't rely on ancient controls and "realism" over player fun.

While GoW has good storytelling, it felt like a prologue and that disappointed me a lot.

Also, the middle part with the Atreus personality change, eh, quite badly executed.

It's not going to be a GTAV vs TLOU situation simply because RDR2 is a very serious game while GTAV was this stupid sarcastic silly little story that no one took seriously.

RDR2 has some absolutely incredible story moments. The voice acting, facial animations, dialogue and music are right up there with God of War. Some are approaching Naughty Dog quality. Arthur Morgan is a great protaganist who can go toe to toe with reboot Kratos and Aloy as the best lead this gen. The mission variety is insane and i must have been playing for like 40 hours now. Typically, open world games and especially Rockstar open world games start from driving to one place, shooting a bunch of people and driving back. In RDR2, you still drive to some places but then they keep things fresh by giving you all these different scenarios that i would rather not spoil right now.

You can tell that 3000 people worked on this game for 5-8 years because there is just so many really complex and scripted scenarios that require their own animations, scripting and dialogue. thats crazy for a 50-60 hour campaign.

Now God of War is also a really long campaign. 30 hours or so, plus 10-20 more hours to do the Valkryies and other side content like Niphelheim and Musphelheim. And it inarguably plays a lot better than RDR2. It has less filler, better pacing, better level design and bosses, but RDR2 is doing so much more it's insane.

I think the story, setpices and graphics cancel each other out, and at the end of the day, it will come down to what critics value more in games. Glorious combat and tight level design vs this masterpiece of engineering, unparalleled in scope, a tightly crafted narrative driven game that truly redefines the sandbox nature of open world games. I hated RDR1, thought GTA4 and V were overrated to oblivion but RDR2 is like playing a 60 hour naughty dog game set in the most detailed open world i have ever seen. I mean, every NPC can be spoken with and interacted with for up to three dialogue turns. That's like a thousand NPCs. Absolutely nuts.

RDR2 will take most of them, 60% through and I enjoyed God of War more. My take is that even though both of these 2 are more impressive, my GOTY is Spider-Man as neither of these came close to how much I enjoyed that.

Not saying I agree, but RDR2 obviously. A game doesn't get 10 after 10 after 10 and not dominate GOTY.

I honestly expect the tone of the discussion around RDR2 to shift dramatically in the coming weeks.

IMO the gaming press were out of their minds when they showered the game with perfect scores.

Personally I wouldn't give it to either, but I think GoW takes it.
Well, I already feel like it's changing. It's not precisely an unpopular opinion to say that it's too realistic for it's own good, or that it's boring, or that it's slow, etc.

As for the topic, I think RDR2 will win the VGA awards, but GOW will get more overall (kinda like TLOU vs GTA V)

Well, they showed up in my game. The box with text that pops up in the top left corner is usually helpful to read while playing.

Sometimes you don't catch those because you're to busy watching your horse doing backflips because you hit a tiny rock at a weird angle.

I'm not making this up. People do miss a lot of mechanics. Hence the post R* made on their social media.

What reality do you live in where this is true? It sure as hell ain't this one looking at Bloodborne, Horizon, UC4 or most PS4 1st party titles. RDR2 will sweep.

I'm not saying it's guaranteed a win because lul Sony fanboys. But there's no obvious Nintendo game except for Smash. And Smash is like Bloodborne in that it will have its loud, passionate fans, but that group is slightly smaller than the fandom overall. And Red Dead has enough detractors that I think it will hurt it.

But who knows? I'm just guessing and welcome the possibility that I am very very wrong.

Honestly the more I read player impressions of RDR2 the less I'm in a hurry to play it. I will get to it eventually but it sounds like such a bore to play. Which is a shame.

For me God of War is the game of the gen. That said I think RDR2 will get the most awards because the media hype for it is through the roof

God of War. I say this without meaning it as some dig, but most professional outlets have way more Sony fans
Well, if that were the reasoning...

- God of War III would not have been outnumbered by Red Dead Redemption back in 2010.
- Uncharted 3 would not have been outnumbered by Skyrim back in 2011.
- Journey would not have been outnumbered by The Walking Dead back in 2012.
- Bloodborne would not have been outnumbered by The Witcher 3 in 2015.

You can see where I'm going with this.

It will probably be RDR 2, but it won't deserve it. It has some major issues no GOTY should have, such as janky controls and ridiculous gameplay elements. I haven't witness a game with reception so out of touch with user opinions in quite awhile. It's the type of GOTY we'll look back on and say "What were we thinking?"

God of War is by far the superior game.

God of War is a tighter, more consistent experience however Red Dead will deservingly win it due to evolving gaming worlds and be the game that has the most impact on the next generation.

Lol. Wait, this is sarcasm, right?
Of course it isn't sarcasm. God of War's narrative is on a completely different level than near any other game. It delivers its story which such seriousness, maturity, and sincerity that it becomes a shining city on a hill for what games can be. Its is incredibly heartfelt and touching as well as narrow in scope.

Maybe it impacted me more because I am a father, but God of War truly felt like a completely different level of storytelling in video games.

Looking at meta, it looks to be RDR2. I am not done with it yet but I still prefer story of GoW but RDR2 world and setting is masterful.

The matters of recency bias and metascore tells me it will be RDR2

But then let's not forget that GTAV came after TLOU with higher meta and still got destroyed by it, so who knows really

I wouldn't be surprised if it will be close just like it was between Uncharted 4 and Overwatch.

Though RDR got insanely good scores it seems like it's way more divisive while GOW seems like it was liked across the board.

god of war just wasn't all that interesting for most of its runtime, it will receive accolades for being impressive but i imagine that more people will enjoy the gameplay of red dead
I loved RDR2 in spite of its gameplay, and loved GOW, for the first time in series history because I finally had fun with the combat.

Seeing people just detracting everything RDR2 does well is just sad.

The game is an 8/10 for me, and I absolutely loved it.

Had issues with the controls, but for those that didn't, who am I to say they are wrong for being able to overlook them or get along with them?

This idea that one is, "way more deserving," than the other is nonsense. They both excel at the things they set out to do. And I was able to enjoy GoW despite it handling very slowly and heavily compared to my prefered action games. There were plenty of people ripping GoW for its controls or handling at launch but how soon do we forget? It's all preference. GoW's somewhat clunky tank controls is what gives Kratos movement and gameplay personality, this doesn't make the devs wrong or behind the ball. It was a design choice. RDR2 just does this to an absurd effect, and many were still able to enjoy the game while buying into the concept.
