Finished season 3. I have a question.
At the end of Season 2 its implied the Rochi has been contaminated with Proto Molecule.
Was that plot thread just dropped when they realised the show was going to be cancelled?

Nope, that protomolecule fragment is what allows Miller to happen. That how the protomelecule communicates with Holden. It was implied by a camera shot but very easy to miss

Watching Season 3 now. This show is the best Sci-Fi show ever.

Oh and the search function sucks on here. Google gave me a better result.

Ok just catching up on this o Amazon Prime and just started season 2. I noticed season 3 on my cable network and on the SyFy app only have eps, 9-13 Available.

Anyone know why not the whole season on demand? And when Amazon will have season 3 up??

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Expanse, and the Creeping Phenomenon of Uncanceled TV

It was early May and screenwriter-producer Mark Fergus had a feeling bad news was on the horizon. While his longtime writing partner, Hawk Ostby, who lives in Vermont, was considering the depths of Lake Champlain, Fergus was in Los Angeles, settled into his couch in his Topanga Canyon home with his wife, Julie, a bottle of cheap white wine from Trader Joe's, and reruns of Columbo. He was waiting for a call from Alcon Entertainment confirming the death of his and Ostby's beloved space opera on Syfy, The Expanse, after three seasons.

"The news was imminent," says Fergus, whose 15-year career in movies and television includes an Oscar nomination for his work on the Children of Menscreenplay. "We are a show that people really like, but one that's always included in those 'Great Shows No One Is Watching' [stories]. I went to my comfort zone and waited for the phone to ring."

Finally, after years of toiling on 36 episodes, the call came. It was over. In the ensuing days, Fergus continued to work on The Expanse, keeping reality at bay. He finished reading the sixth novel in the James S. A. Corey series on which the show is based, took notes, gathered them up, sealed them in a box, and "got ceremonial." As the days stretched on, the chances of a miracle comeback felt more and more remote. "The stages of mourning were about to start," he says.

While Fergus was buried in his book, however, fans had started a petition for Amazon or Netflix to rescue the series. It garnered more than 100,000 signatures. Viewers cobbled together enough cash to fly a plane over Amazon Studios, in Santa Monica, with a banner that read, "#SavetheExpanse." Cakes were being delivered to Amazon Studios chief executive Jennifer Salke. Patton Oswalt begged for The Expanse's return on Twitter. Wil Wheaton urged fans to watch the show to increase viewer numbers for potential suitors. George R. R. Martin sent Amazon chief Jeff Bezos a personal e-mail rallying behind the show.

On Friday, May 25, 15 days after its cancellation, Bezos was honored at the National Space Society's annual International Space Development Conference in Los Angeles. A question-and-answer session with *The Expanse'*s cast and show-runner happened to precede his appearance. To the shock of those in the room—including the cast—Bezos told the crowd Amazon was saving the show.

I'm still amazed this show got saved and also extremely happy. I recently canceled Cable so the fact I can still watch it is even better.

Whenever I'm feeling down lately, I remind myself The Expanse beat out the odds and got renewed, lol. I had a tough time fully enjoying the show despite my love for it during the second and third seasons, because I just knew looking at the ratings it wasn't long from this world. I screamed its virtues from every rooftop I could find hoping it would catch on more. When the cancellation news came down, I wasn't surprised at all. But we did something amazing, y'all. And now I can rest easy.

I finally finished the season finale of Season 1, and I quite liked it. Although its been months since I last watched this show, so I can't remember much of the story to be honest. I think many of the characters have way too complex names, and I'm disappointed Julie Mao had such few minutes in the season, seeing how people was telling me to watch this show if I wanted to see more of Florence Faivre's talent. Does she play a bigger role in Season 2? I'm thinking of giving it a chance and continue watching into Season 2, but I'm contemplating if I should rewatch Season 1 or not. I can remember Julie took a ship, and then got infected and died, while the crew figured out a set up, which has now made Earth and Mars accuse each other with the Belters inbetween or some sorts.

I reckon you should just read a summary of S1 and then dive straight in. S2 is a decent improvement on all fronts. Avoid spoilers!

They have to go back to the station where she died in season 2 and she does come out in that episode to wrap up her arc, but doesn't really get a lot of screen time. In season 3 I think she had 1 flashback scene to introduce another character and iirc she's was removed as part of the main cast so we're probably done with her story.

Wife and I decided to give this show a chance a few months ago. First season introduces you to so many characters that you feel overwhelmed at first. But the last few episodes really pull it all together. Seasons 2 and 3 were fantastic. Extremely excited for the next season.

Completely agree! I initially dropped it after episode 3 because I couldn't follow the mystery plot very well, and had no chance for attachment to the multitude of characters. I went back a couple months later and it was like they flipped a switch in episode 4 that made everything excellent, burned through all 3 seasons that week!

Just finished season 3. I thought it was pretty good. I dont really want to wait a year or however long it takes for season 4 and was wondering about reading the books. How close is the show to the books? Can you just pick up where the show left off and not be confused? Are any of the main characters different?

Books are more detailed, events play out differently, but core story is told well in the series.

I would read the books from the start to see how they cut many corners with budget and to experience the entire story.

Just about to start the final episode of season 3 and have been enjoying it thoroughly after putting off watching this season for a while.

Having just finished Killjoys, it's insane how many of the cast popped up in The Expanse too.

EDIT: Just finished. Looking forward to new Stargate.

I finally finished watching this all the way through season 3. It would have been a crime to let this show die on the vine.

Haven't read through thread in fear of spoilers, but I just started this show this weekend. Anyone want to sell me on it? I'm about 3 episodes in and I kind of can't stand the main characters. But I love some of the visual effects and I love good sci-fi. I've also heard the show gets "really weird" which has me intrigued.

But the characters, man....like that "badass" cop with the trilby who doesn't play by the rules? Really?

Season 1 has a rough start, but things start happening with urgency by the end of ep 4. Characterisation gets better towards the end of S1 and then S2/3 are a real step up on all fronts.

Miller gets better, don't worry :)

EDIT: I had a similar initial reaction to S1 and only stuck with it because "hard" sci-fi TV is so rare. Now, after 3 seasons, I have no qualms calling it the best TV sci-fi ever made.

Miller's sorta an intentional stereotype and the angle is that he gets into situations less and less like where you would find a hardboiled detective.

I personally loved him from the get-go, but it's less interesting seeing him work cases on Ceres than where his story ends up.

Some sites were reporting Nov 15th a few weeks ago for US Amazon, but it looks like that's been changed to just "Winter" now.

https://www.newsweek.com/expanse-season-3-release-date-amazon-watch-1201665

Should be out soonish unless they're planning on releasing season 3 and 4 close together.
from that article:

while Netflix had global rights outside of North America and New Zealand. Streaming is where the series gained its popularity. The nature of Amazon's on-demand streaming rights for Season 3 remain unclear.

It's odd they can't speak clearly on the international rights. Netflix seems to have removed both season 1 and 2 as well, so it seems it should get on Amazon Prime for us lowly Euros, but currently, not available on any service at all. Weird as shit tbh.

Edit: If was in any way conspirational, I'd think Netflix didn't like the new deal giving Amazon WW rights for the next seasons, and they're intentionally trying to block prior season from being available. I mean, if was wearing a tinfoil hat and all.

It took me a while to get into the show too. But now I think it's one of the best sci-fi things I've ever watched.

I also thought the main characters were unlikable at first. Now I love all of them.

Hopefully you continue to give it a chance, it settles in shortly after where you are, and the show benefits from the fact that it moves very quickly. It doesn't meander on plot threads or withhold revelations, which helps keep it from being a frustrating slog like so many other shows.

Thanks both. Will definitely stick with it. Just spoke with another close from who had high praise for the show.

The Expanse season 4 drops on Amazon Prime exactly one week from today. Still not confirmed whether it'll drop all episodes at once or air them one per week, but the assumption is all at once. 10 episodes. No real trailer yet, but I wanna stay unspoiled so probably won't watch a trailer anyways.

Will probably rewatch bits and parts of season 1 and 2 over the next week though.

So excited!
