Blizzard/Diablo fans (myself included) would have still freaked out if Blizzard ended the show with "Diablo 4...yeah that's happening!" That would have created a whole different shitstorm IMO.

Last time they announced a Diablo game too early it was a massive shitshow that still has a bunch of lingering memes. The negative reaction to D3 was kind of astonishing. I can see why they wanted to avoid that, but they underestimated how big the backlash would be to Immortal (which itself will almost certainly be massively popular).
D3 was shown very early on and Blizzard got shit for years about showing it early. This reeks of PR spin and makes no sense. Then why not just fucking say it. Or at the very least mention it at the Q&A the next day when the backlash was obvious.

as a Diablo non-player, I find the backlash largely dumb and over the top, but it was also predictable and easily mitigable.

this kind of reminds me of the Metroid Prime Federation Force announcement in 2015. not quite as tone-deaf, since everyone knows that Diablo IV is coming (whereas as of 2015, there was legitimate cause to doubt whether there would ever be another proper Metroid), and Immortal is just a streamlined version of the mainline series rather than a drastic departure from it in every respect, but that's the closest comparison that comes to mind.

They didn't even need a video. Just state foremost that you are hard at work on the next generation of Diablo, but in the meantime here's a fun project they've been able to create with NetEase.

However open the show with Diablo (Immortal), and end with the Warcraft and Overwatch segments that delivered more fulfilling products/announcements.

Simple stuff, it's nuts.

I need a named source before I believe this. Leaking Blizzard games is very rare and now we got two random people leaking a huge tentpole game. Even OW wasn't even leaked at all.

This sounds more like damage control to me. Even Nintendo had the foresight to double down make sure to drill into people the LG WAS NOT THE NEXT GEN POKEMON PROMISED.
So if this is true, whoever decided to pull it out needs to evaluate their priorities

This isnt that shocking. You could just tell they set up for D4 and then for reasons it was pulled less then a month before the show.

I'm amazed at the amount of sheer ignorance it took for them to screw up Diablo Immortals announcement. I mean putting aside it's the worst venue for this thing, live for fans to boo, at the end of your big PC focused presentation, but you could've softened the blow with Diablo 4. You don't even to show anything, look at Metroid Prime 4. We don't even know who's making that game and it's been 1 1/2 years, but at least it's real and we can stop asking for it to exist.

Who ever made that decision must be feeling the heat.
I get needing to tone down the announcement because it's going through another retool behind the scenes. Saying nothing was insanity.

Whoever made the final call to put that on last instead of ending with the WC3 remaster (which no one saw coming!) probably shouldn't be doing the stage schedule anymore.

Well, I guess this is what we have to look forward to with the 'capable' new hands of Blizzard's management.

this pains me

Everybody knows it is in Development. What would a tease change on the reaction side for Immortal?

Once again the "community" showed that gamers are just hard to please and act really embarrasing tbh

So the takeaway is that the development of Diablo 4 is such a shitshow right now that they don't even want to commit to showing the name/logo?

This isn't really a "leak." The idea that Blizzard has been working on a Diablo 3 followup isn't really a secret, just going by publicly available job postings.

lol so had Blizzard shown a 10-second teaser of a title card a la Elder Scrolls 6 then fans would have been happy?

All they needed to do was show a fiery background and have a IV over it.

How dumb are these billion dollar companies.

Especially since many knew this would be in the cards, but what a stupendously lame way to have Diablo 4 "confirmed." Considering the on-stage reaction to someone asking if Immortal would eventually be released for PC was to sarcastically ask if people had phones, this was a missed opportunity. People are excited for this, and it could have been a great follow-up surprise to finish out the show, and allay concerns that the phone title signaled a change to the core series.

One of those people told me that the Diablo team wasn't yet ready to commit to an announcement, as Diablo 4 has changed drastically over the past four years and may continue to change further. (We've heard it's gone through at least two different iterations under different directors.)

Sounds like D4 is going through same kind troubled development as D3 did.

I know there were some people in the Blizzcon thread saying that we know the game is coming and Blizz doesn't need to come out and say it... kinda like 'meh who cares?'

Honestly, for me, I just wanted it officially stated in some capacity. That's all they needed to do imo. I didn't need a trailer, game footage or anything. Just like with D3, just show me a logo.

Welp, this puts Blizzard on an even more awkward position.

Whoever decided to pull the tease made an incredibly dumb mistake, none of the controversy around Immortal would've happened if they would've teased it.

Just show a logo.

A logo, would've saved all of this mess.

Eh, I think they're right not to do that. Let the D4 announcement be a full-on Blizzard CG trailer.

Yeah this is a marketing failure here, Bethesda showed them that this works.
Not really. ESVI isn't coming for years. And not like 2-3 years, like 5 or 6 years. There's going to be backlash eventually sort of like what the FFVII remake is going through right now.

Plus reading the article it seems like Blizzard isn't entirely confident in Diablo IV yet and who knows how long we'll see that too.

This whole situation is so weird.

Everyone knows they are making D4 but they won't say anything. What is the harm in showing a "D4 is currently in development screen".
Also, on the flip side. Since everyone knows they are making it, why are people getting made over them not showing it?

So they were teasing it in the months running up to the event and then pulled it and fans were like wtf and it's all the fans fault according to games media? Some people disliked youtube videos. Someone asked a sarky question. The sky literally fell in with the blizzard fan reaction.

So now people want vague title card announcements years and years before there's literally a single thing to show them?

Ok...

Well, actually...
https://kotaku.com/heres-what-blizzards-titan-actually-was-1638632121

If you're thinking this all sounds way too cool to be buried forever, here's a bit of good news: One person connected to Blizzard told me that "a good handful" of the Titan team is actually still intact, despite yesterday's news that the game has been cancelled.

"They changed the code-name after that reboot," said that person. "So the project that was 'Titan' did die last year."

So maybe Blizzard's still got a small team plugging away at Titan's world and concepts in hopes of bringing something fun—and substantially smaller—out of the wreckage. But it doesn't seem like we'll ever see the Team Fortress 2-meets-Destiny-meets-The Sims-meets-World of Warcraft chimera that Blizzard was working on for so many years. Like Starcraft Ghost and Warcraft Adventures before it, the project once called Titan is no more.

The sad part is, the gamer community would likely have thrown the exact same tantrum had they announced Diablo 4. How do I know?

Well. Diablo3 showed us that.

Blizzard knows this, too. They tried another approach. They should have realized the Diablo audience especially is too far gone from reason to react well to anything that doesn't give them what they want this second, and just pulled Diablo entirely.
