Presentation for the design ethos of DmC, the Devil May Cry reboot/spinoff game. DmC was developed by Ninja Theory, but I'm not sure who was responsible for that slideshow.

They had slides with examples of what their new version of Dante (the series' main protagonist) would NOT be like, and what he would be like

The image posted earlier was one of the slides, and it has Devil May Cry 4's version of Dante photoshopped into an image from the movie Brokeback Mountain, a movie about two men who fall in love. The image was meant to draw a parallel between those movie characters and the DMC4 Dante to paint the latter's design as a gay cowboy, and it portrayed that as being inherently negative.

In the end, the presentation was antagonistic toward the existing series at best, and homophobic at its worst
Wow. It is actually that bad. There is no way i want to support that kind of company. It's kinda contradicting to who i am. It means no more DmC for me :(

Did they even get call out for this?

"Does it have multiplayer?" (Or something in that vein)
Sean murray: yes.

75% of what peter molyneux have said during his entire career.

Dont exactly remember who (i think it was some cod dev): "the games not balanced for lean"

More recently by dan houser: "we've worked 100 hour weeks", and kinda supplementary to this, from cory barlog just a couple of months earlier: (with a little paraphrasing) "we dont have crunch, we just have really passionate developers"

There is just too many that comes to mind honestly. Media training in game dev needs to be more of a thing imo

When Payday 2 first got microtransactions (skins with stat bonuses) it got some pushback (there was already a lot of dlc, and the devs had said there would be no MTs in early interviews). I was annoyed but it was okay.

Then the CEO of Overkill (who had been the name on all announcements about the game until then) said that people were complaining, but more people wanted MTs.

I uninstalled the game immediately. I haven't played since really, although I think they mitigated the MTs a bit (they gave stats for a while but no longer iirc).

I'm probably missing some context. What's going on in this picture? I'm afraid I don't see the offence, but I could be missing something obvious.

Edit: I should add that I don't know the game character, so I don't have any context for him. I do know that those are the guys from Brokeback mountain.

"When we've dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much. That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?"

Hahahahahahaha oh shit I forgot about this.

For context, Payday 2 added microtransactions - loot boxes that had a random chance of giving you a skin that boosted your weapon's stats - after years of saying they wouldn't. This was on top of monthly pay-to-win DLC weapon packs and adding advertisements for major Hollywood movies to their game (including changing the intro video to the movie's trailer) that already wasn't free-to-play.

The fan base had taken the last straw and revolted. Overkill's at-the-time community manager and later lead designer responded with what may be the worst Reddit AMA of all time.

To this date, this is the reason why I have never, and will never, play Fez. Fuck that racist prick.

I laughed. People still upset about this? That was said in what might as well be the middle ages of Japanese game dev. He was right. Plus, when did he ever say anything racist about its people? The question was about games. I hope you denounced Keiji Inafune as a racist too on your little crusade, because he also had a few choice words about the state of game dev in the country :)

It's a (bad) joke about Capcom asking Ninja Theory for "a western take on DMC" (Capcom contracted NT to reboot the DMC series), so they put the series' main character in a western movie. According to NT it wasn't meant to be homophobic at all, just a dumb joke, but it's easy to misunderstand. Marketing for DmC should be a case study on what NOT to do when interacting with a community.

Not a dev but i remember Major Nelson when he said "we have the xbox 360 for everyone that wants to be able to play games offline" answering people complaining about the Xbox One always online policy.

Some people in here really need to learn the difference between developers and CEOs/marketing.

Reminder that this was a reply to some asshole insulting him, and his ability to make games on Twitter. This was just after Fez won an award and was essentially a "Well they liked it, go suck on it". It wasn't uncalled for, but definitely not a good image.

To this date, this is the reason why I have never, and will never, play Fez. Fuck that racist prick.
1, The quoted picture has nothing to do with racism at all.

2, I guess you are thinking of the "Japanese games suck" thing. In such case you might want to read up on that Q&A event, or about Phil in general. He fucking loves Japanese games but thought the industry had turned to shit during the 360/PS3/Wii era when the event took place. The original Zelda is one of his favourite games of all time for crying out loud. Both him and Jon Blow then had a fairly lengthy talk on what they thought the problems were, including things like excessive tutorialisation. Iirc they called out Skyward Sword in particular. Nothing said publicly has ever been slightly racist.

It was just a badly worded, overly antagonistic way of starting his argument. Something Phil unfortunately had a habit of doing quite often ("gamers are the worst fucking people").

Remember the time Kaz told people he wanted people to work two jobs to afford a PS3.
Is there a link for this?

It gets thrown around a lot, but as far as I can tell he never actually said that. The actual quote that comes up seems to suggest people working overtime, which still isn't a good look, but it's far from suggesting that people get a second job.

Pokémon Let's Go in general is this, with Masuda pouring more gasoline on the fire with every interview.

Also, not in a good position to get the exact timestamp right now since I'm on my phone, but the "Paper Mario doesn't need to be an RPG because that's already covered by Mario and Luigi RPG" comment from this interview confirmed pretty much everyone's worst fears:

I do not quite understand the second case, if the game you're announcing is not an RPG it makes sense to say it. What would have been better, lying?

It also makes sense to explain that having two teams making Mario RPG at the same time is redundant.

All the recent moaning about poise in the Dark Souls thread made me remember the time From said poise was "working as intended" when Dark Souls 3 first came out. Que the short lived memes and gamer anger. I think Patrick Klepek even made a article about it when he was at Kotaku at the time.

I gotta come clean here, I too was in the "wtf From" group at the time but now I think the poise works well the way it is now and for the better especially when they put out a patch to tweak it slightly when Ashes of Ariandel came out.

I actually did this with my first paycheque, bought a PS3 at my new job, UK pricing though.

Thanks for finding the actual quote instead of the two job business I always see get thrown about on these boards whoever said it.

That Gameinformer cover story with Casey Hudson produced a few gems, but none as good as this one:

A bit of a slow burn, but J. Allen Brack's "you think you do but you dont"

He, Blizzard, and all WoW fans will probably never forget that.

Holy shit, J said that? I'm a huge WoW fan, how did I miss that? Moreover, I agree with his sentiment 100%. He's absolutely right. Source: Me. I lasted 5 mins in the classic demo this weekend before getting bored outta my gourd.

I think Nuts and Bolts is the best Banjo game but that video Rare put out where they tried to compare the hub abilities to the n64 games to be like "No this game has platforming, honest!" was really bad messaging. I remember specifically they tried to say using high grip wheels to go up a slope was the same as the talon trot, shit was goofy

Wasn't poise basically non existent at the beginning of the game life cicle?

I appreciate actually. I rather have the dev say what are they thinking than having him lie to my face to save his own.

Another cool thing is that down the line, we can see if the audience was just overreacting, or if the dev was really wrong.

It's also good to see the community reactions.

All in all, we will always get dank memes out of it.

Everything Ubisoft said during the Assassin's Creed Unity female character debacle

It was kinda obvious why there were no female characters (everyone was playing as Arno from their perspective) but rather than explain it from that angle to the uninformed, they made it sound like a female character option was on the table and they actively chose not to do it. They just kept digging and digging their own grave for no reason.

At least that mess probably led to Kassandra in AC: Odyssey so something good came of it eventually.

Town adjacent to Silent Hill
Fumito Ueda on The Last Guardian's protagonist's gender:
"Early in development, the main character in The Last Guardian was female, but the team ended up going with a boy. The reason: they thought it would be more realistic that he would have enough grip strength to be able to climb around, and because they wouldn't have to worry about camera angles with a girl who wears a skirt."

Fumito Ueda on Shadow of the Colossus's composer change:
"ICO's composer was (female composer) Michiru Ohshima, and I didn't want to create the same image for this game. Aside from that, ICO was a game that both male and female players could enjoy equally. But I think this is a game that male players will enjoy more. So I chose a male composer."

I'm probably missing some context. What's going on in this picture? I'm afraid I don't see the offence, but I could be missing something obvious.

Edit: I should add that I don't know the game character, so I don't have any context for him. I do know that those are the guys from Brokeback mountain.
The context is Ninja Theory wanting to prove that old Dante stands out in more realistic movie settings, necessitating a redesign and art direction overhaul. They had a bunch of examples of old Dante standing out like a sore thumb, including this one. Out of context, the picture can easily come off as "ha ha old Dante is gay", but that's luckily not what this was. If anything, the implication is that new Dante would fit in better in this poster. At the end of the day though, they obviously deliberately picked this movie for a cheap laugh during a presentation, because "ha ha remember that gay movie". That's still disappointing.

For all his faults, Phil Fish has a point there.

He's 100% right there.
I actually agree, but at the time he was absolutely villified for that as well.

I think he said it once when people were mass sending him messages of them pirating Fez "because they didn't like him". I then remember him saying "fuck gamers" around the time of him defending Zoe Quinn and him hating the formation of GG.

Actually, given how vocal he was against harassment I'm surprised Era doesn't like him more and things like "fuck that racist" still get posted.

Tanabe: "Aside from wanting us to change the atmosphere a lot, there were two main things that Miyamoto-san said from the start of the project [of developing Paper Mario: Sticker Star] —'It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?' and 'As much as possible, complete it with only characters from the Super Mario world.'"

Tanabe single-handedly made the most hardcore of Nintendo fanboys call for Miyamoto's resignation.
Paper Mario did use characters mostly from SMW 1&2, though. They just were allowed (or allowed themselves?) more ambition with them.

Idk about none existent but it definitely did not work the same as DS1 and DS2 and some people had a hard time dealing with that, me included. Seeing as people were still complaining after the AOA patch I want to say it was maybe buffed from what was already there and not added in after.
