Nutcracker has that weird uncanny valley saccharin artificial look as Oz the Great and Powerful and those Alice in Wonderland films. I find the art style really offputting.

Seeing Suspiria later tonight, really hope to see Burning but it's not easy to find it playing, and I've gotta see Halloween for sure.

So true. Don't think I'd ever even heard of it till seeing the title for this thread and wondering what nutcracker movie came out. Hopefully budget was small!
I didn't hear anything about it until I saw a poster for it at Hollywood studios. Thought it was a direct to DVD movie at that point. Yikes!

I just can't get over the shit Disney will green light over Tron 3. I mean did they really think the Nutcracker would be the next Pirates or something? At least Tron is their own original IP that they can grow and leverage. Hell, use it to help promote the Tron coaster opening at Disney World in a few years.

Tencent is pushing it and the interest is there. Most MCU stand alone features do 100m+. Sony was very smart to partner up with Tencent, it was basically a safety net if the movie outright bombed elsewhere (not that it needed great returns with its budget being under control).

Venom is pretty much locked to outgross Justice League. It will probably pass Man of Steel and Doctor Strange as well, unless China is super frontloaded.

$200M is dead for Halloween. It might hit $175M.

Passing Doctor Strange will be something. Considering that so far most of Venoms meals have been phase 1-2 MCU films, and lower hanging productions like Ant Man and the Wasp. I wonder if Winter Solider could be in play. We'll have an idea when China starts. Foreign numbers for Venom seem to be largely a week behind in reporting atm.

I'm shocked that Solo is still getting updated tracking, I wonder if Disney is going to push it to 400m.

Here a question for people:

Aquaman. Over or under Antman and the Wasp?

Aquaman
Opening Weekend Range: $40 – 60 million

The DC cinematic brand will be tested again with the universe's first chapter since last year's Justice League under-performed. A strong contingent of fans are excited for this character's first big-screen solo adventure, while Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and the ensemble cast should help translate to fair appeal among both men and women.

Social buzz thus far is comparable to Ant-Man and the Wasp, although a less front-loaded run is likely given the time of year. Reviews and word of mouth, as always, will be key for the comic book adaptation, but Aquaman is effectively looking to serve as the top option for moviegoers interested in an action-driven spectacle around the holiday break.

https://pro.boxoffice.com/long-range-tracking-mary-poppins-returns-aquaman-bumblebee/

AMATW
Domestic Total Gross: $216,648,740
Foreign Total Gross: $405,815,415
Worldwide: $622,464,155

Antman opened to 75m but Aquaman has the holiday season.

Nutcracker had to cost a fortune to make. It didnt even make a quarter of Halloween's and that was only 10 mil budget

Is there any chance next weekend there will be more screens for Suspiria, or is this probably it at its peak?

Edit: The Sisters Brothers already came out? Yikes.

I'm at work at the moment and I thought it would be interesting to share what our numbers are at the moment. Bohemian Rhapsody- 277 split between Imax and one main screen. Nutcracker- 112 split between three main screens. A Star Is Born- 61 and Venom with 55 people.

Is it true that Bohemian Rhapsody avoids any kind of gay sexual scenes, while relishing in Freddie's straight sexual antics?

The only ad I saw for the new Nutcracker was a short trailer played before a screening of Halloween that stopped itself 30 seconds in to remind the audience to silence their cell phones. This thread is the first time I've seen the poster; can't imagine why it bombed.

I love both the Nutcraker book and opera. The movie's trailers have done nothing for me.

That Nutcracker movie looks like every single generic "kids fantasy movie based on a book that ripped off the Chronicles of Narnia" that we've seen for the past decade.

Watched the trailer (trailer, not teaser) and I still don't know what the fuck the movie's about except for generic "kid gets sucked into a portal and must save both worlds!" bullshit.

No. It's made clear he's gay, he kisses other men, etc. It also didn't relish in his straight sexual antics. That said due to rating there aren't really any sexual antics at all. It just shows he had early relationship with Mary that formed his linear lasting and most important friendship and that he had both gay lovers and flings.

It's very much a 3/5 film, well acted (very well in Malik's case) and competently made, entertains enough but shallow and it cheats timelines and events to construct a standard narrative vs being more daring with structure and style.

TBH any film was going to struggle to cover his life in 2 to 3 ours. More focus was needed, greater character depth and less lightweight fluff.

Still - audience I saw it with applauded at conclusion of live aid set as though they'd just watched the show for real so the music sequences sem to be connecting.

It's not awful or bad just rather bland. Which is a shame as Freddie was anything but bland.

Absolutely not. This is a rumor cooked up by people who haven't seen the movie.

I went to see Bohemian Rhapsody and the theater was packed. I can see how it is doing well. I think, despite the reviews, it is good enough to have positive response from audiences. The audience clapped after the movie (no, I'm not in the US either, lol).

As for me, I enjoyed the movie. Its strengths overcome its weaknesses. Malek was awesome in it.

The movie seems conflicted, like it wants to be dark but bubblegum at the same time

Stop releasing Christmas movies in November for god's sake.

I believe they do this to get 2 waves, 1 wave for those that can't wait until it comes out and have to watch it opening week, then another wave when it's christmas so people can watch their christmas film at christmas.

Let's see how Grinch does next week to see if this trend will continue. Shockingly little info on the Grinch, is this going to turn into a surprise Musical like The Lorax again?

It's gonna be bad though. Illumination never rises above mediocre.

People will watch something in December. The final two weeks are some of the biggest movie weeks of the year. It's just a question of what gets picked from the many wide releases.

I'm so worried for Bumblebee. It looks to be the first good Transformers movie, but there's a real chance it could underperform. Let's hope overseas markets eat it up.

Come on, Bee. You can do it!

Nutcracker looked like Alice in Wonderland 3 personally.
ugh
I don't know why Disney just has the darndest ideas and the shittiest luck over the years for their live-action projects outside of their "classic remakes/sequels" roster.

You would think they would've figured it out by now. They clearly still care enough to pursue these.

Yup.

It worked once, Disney. And Alice 1 had both Johnny Depp's lingering-if-dwindling star power and Tim Burton's lingering-if-dwindling directorial clout to help sell it.

This just looks like a rehash of a poorly conceived idea.

By the way, completely tangential, but I just discovered that Pee Wee's Big Adventure is TB's lowest rated film on Metacritic. What a bunch of sour old curmudgeons. By comparison, it's his second highest rated on Rotten Tomatoes. Funny how that can be.

Disney doesn't have a great track record for the live action stuff coming out of their main label in recent years. Even the live action remakes are very inconsistent. Pixar/WDAS, Lucasfilm, and Marvel just make so much money that it no longer matters as much.

What do you guys think? Is $700 million possible for Venom when all is said and done? Or more like $650 million?

If Aquaman is halfway decent it will be that. I genuinely believe people are fucking hungry for a good DC movie, it showed with wonderwoman
