The heart of Mario 64 - to me, anyway - was the castle itself and the castle grounds. I could - and still do - have a blast just running around and exploring there.
Mario Odyssey, meanwhile, is basically just a straight-line path.

But once you got into the level in 64 you were put on a linear path to get said star. Odyessey opens that up, and doesn't kick you out of the world every time you complete an objective. Each kingdom in Odyessey feels like a castle in it's own right that you can explore to your hearts content. Each kingdom also has dynamic changes that occur from the first time you enter it to the time you leave. There may be linear progression in the flight of the odyessey but this is by far the most freedom we've had in a Mario game.

Yeah, if you go off the beaten path, very often I find some very cool puzzles, platforming challenges, etc.

And yeah I feel like you're looking at Mario 64 with rose-colored glasses (and it's one of my favorite games of all time). That game much more linear outside of a few stars you can collect whenever and there's definitely more reward for exploring here in Odyssey (either coins, stars, region specific coins, extra hearts, etc) if you think something might be there. The earlier kingdoms also seem to open up more the farther you progress. New Donk City is probably where the game really starting to feel non-linear I guess.

I'm, idk, maybe between 2-3 hours in, mostly loving it of course. 95% of my Switch play has been docked with pro controller, but I've played exclusively with split joycons so far as that's the suggested setup or whatever. The movement controls clicked right away and feel great except for one thing -- the cap spin move. That motion of jerking both joycons to the left is just......not good? It feels awkward and terrible every time to me. Instead of that I've been just throwing the cap and then kinda waving the joycons wildly and it tends to just spin after a bit of flying around lol. But anyway, next time I boot the game up I'm gonna try with pro controller and see which setup I prefer.

I'm in the third kingdom, and if anything I actually think the game has been way more linear so far than anyone let on. It's still entirely "do this. now do this. now,...do THIS" so far which is kind of ...eh. I mean I know I'm still very early, but I'm looking forward to hopefully having the shackles totally thrown off sooner rather than later, but maybe Breath Of The Wild conditioned me to expect too much freedom in that regard.

Game is freaking gorgeous, music is fantastic, etc.

Yeah the first 3 kingdoms seem kinda linear but they open up more later, and I know I found a ton of additional moons by exploring a lot.

Oh my LORD this game you guys. It's just blowing my mind how close it feels to Mario 64. I really didn't expect it to be this much if successor. Holy hell it's good. IT'S SO GOOD! Some of the that collecting moons is structured feels a bit more linear to me, but whatever that's just a taste thing. That may not even be the case either after I play some more.

Damn. Just... damn.
Yeah been playing for like 5 hours straight and wow this game man

In my experience, past the cascade kingdom, the only constraint is really the number of moons you have and some mandatory bosses. Pretty much exactly how SM 64 was set up. You even get multiple kingdoms to unlock in the progression. It's not 1:1 but there's a very clear line to be drawn for how progression works in Odyssey.

It's my first post here! Hello!

This game is super addicting. I keep telling myself I'll just get one more moon, but then 40 moons later and I'm still going. I feel like I'm just getting started too.

It really does have some of that Mario 64 soul, I can understand complaints about lack of platforming challenge but at the same time it's just so adventurous and engaging on a number of levels. It's also delightfully weird, Odyssey is an apt name

One question, sure it's been asked

How do you engage with those grey marble looking blocks that have those hairline cracks in them?

I'm straight up loving the game so far. I think I had 27 moons when I called it a night. All from the first two areas as I left the sand world before doing anything to go back. Got all the special coins in the second area as well and bought everything from that shop.

It reminds me of how I felt playing Super Mario Galaxy for the first time. Just magical and charming as hell. It can't touch playing Mario 64 for the first time though as that was really the first game I played with true 3D movement so it was just mind blowing.

Barely scratched the surface in the desert, but I am so in love with this game. Like BOTW, it's something I want to take my time with. I get that feeling of frustration only when I feel like I'm running past things I should be stopping to investigate. Mario controls amazingly well, everything looks and runs so smoothly, and the music so far seems like it's of Galaxy quality. Wonderful, wonderful game so far. Can't stop smiling playing and thinking about it.

Except that I play through the game - all 120 stars - at least once a year.
So, no, I'm not.

Well, okay then, I did say Mario 64 was one of my favorite games ever and also said this game opens up more the farther you get. My point was that I wouldn't worry about the game being non-linear.

EDIT: Also my favorite costume is one of the post-game ones. Everyone who gets there will know which one I'm talking about.

Made it to the third kingdom. Exploring these worlds is great. I love constantly being surprised (thank God for blackouts).

Giggled like an idiot "capturing" the T-Rex, the Chain Chomp, and the gold chain chomp/boss. Captain Toad sighting! Did...did I just see a Mario 2 (USA) reference on the Tostada roof? AWESOME.

I'm exploring each kingdom to its fullest. There is so much detail and amazing game design that I just don't want the game to end. So far I've only played portable.

I'm guessing docked is a better experience with the split joycons.

I'm holding out hope that it does open up more as things go along. The lack of a main hub/area is still difficult for me to get past (my fault for not reading up more about the game before it came out, and listening to people comparing it to Mario 64), but hopefully it will be more enjoyable to explore levels as things go along at least...

One issue with it being so linear like this, though, is already I'm seeing myself not particularly wanting to reply this much - which, for me, is a major thing against a game.

I'm not really getting the complaints of linearity. There are a hell of a lot of things to do besides the moon the game highlights. I got half the moons in the sand kingdom before getting the last story-required one in that kingdom, and I'm sure I missed a bunch. I even found a few ways to skip passages you're supposed to go through to get to adjacent big areas of the kingdoms, by doing tricky jumps.

Is the complaint just that there are these handful of required moons per kingdom, some of which open up new objectives in the kingdom?

I mean Mario 64 wasn't the epitome of platforming challenge either. It didn't get any where near difficult until the last two worlds. Even then when it got challenging it got linear, seems like a trade off for this type of game. They try and rectify that here by having challenge room like shrines.

I know you say you play it ever year, but in both quantity and quality of content this is far far better. Like not even close. Not sure it stands up to Mario Galaxy and 3D Land/World though, but I'm early.

I think the comparison that each level is like a "Peach's Castle" that someone made is pretty spot on. If you explore, you can find tons of admittedly freebie moons, but there's a lot of neat challenge ones hidden around too.

Yeah I usually ignore the objective and just try to find as many moons as I can. Usually stumble upon a bunch of neat challenge rooms and stuff. And of course movement is a blast in this, especially with the cap long jumps you can do.

Got around 70 moons and played up until the 4th world (the first path branch, went to the sea stuff).
I'm really enjoying this!
Currently my favorite costume...? Maybe the tuxedo?

The end of New Donk City is fucking incredible, holy shit.

My favorite so far is Dry Bones hair / Mad Scientist Hair + Beach Mario

Game is truly amazing. I was completely immersed so much tonight, that I didn't notice how much time it passed. The worlds so far are beautiful. Taking over many things is a blast. It's all fun, fun, fun! This is what I wanted of a 3D Mario since Mario 64.

Sand Kingdom question

I can't manage to fly with the bird, I hold B/press B but I always keep going further down and down. I know there is a power moon that you can get with the bird. Help?

I just started to play. I am really enjoying this game. My switch was collecting dust until this game came out. I'm won't be putting it down for a long time now. Woo!

My office got this delivered yesterday and oh man. What a game. I was worried it wouldn't have enough Mario 64 vibes but so glad that it's filled with them. Only problem is now I'm half tempted to spend my Saturday at the office so I can play it some more...

Not sure why you would bring up challenge, when I specifically said that wasn't a consideration of mine.

Also, for the 3D Mario games, I would rank them:
64 > 3D World > 3D Land > Sunshine > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1

That's a glider so you can only descend. There is no way to gain height with it.

I feel like a lot of what i've done was spoiled so far by watching trailers or E3 gameplay.

There'd be a tremendous joy in discovering some of this. But i guess i'll get to that joy later on (New Donk City and the desert level were covered pretty extensively. Cascade Kingdom felt more fresh by comparison even though it precedes the desert).

I think you want to just hold B and use left and right to steer. If you press forward you dive and if you press back you stall.

It actually feels surreal to have the game in my hands. I still remember watching GameXplain's analysis video of the 10s of footage they showed of the game from the Switch reveal trailer. Crazy how fast time has gone since then

I distinctly remember thinking "it was literally 10s of blurry footage, there is absolutely no way these dudes can analyse this." Boy was I wrong :D
