If you think a character named Face McShooty isn't deep, I don't know how I can help you.

I went back to BL2 recently and it was mind numbingly boring. Honestly think the only reason I ever played that game back in 2012 was because there weren't any alternatives. Destiny is just a massively better franchise. Much better enemy variety, gunplay, environments, loot and balance. Bioware's Anthem is also looking really damn good. I highly doubt I'll ever touch BL3 unless they make some big changes.

Is boarderlands that deep?

It surprisingly is, you could check on Youtube so many videos for so completely different builds for each class, for example if you wanted challenge on execution Zer0 was a force to be reckon with if played right asking to get close on melee range with bonus on critical health, the amount of weapons with melee bonus / elemental properties / weird ass mechanics was incredible and honestly overwhelming. Weapons behave completely different only taking into account the manufacturer, add to that the random attachments and no weapon was the same, Legendaries were a blast too, lots of game-breaking ones that embrace that game-breaking nature.

The series overused the word badass but it is because it is one of the few games where it wants you to feel like one and you do.

Borderlands 2 felt like playing an offline MMO and helped me realize that people will ignore so much garbage if they can simply play with a friend or two. When that's set aside and you look at the awful fetch quest system and poor randomized loot there's really not a lot to the game. Well other than lame memes I guess.

This thread is kind of funny to me though because I was half expecting BL3 to be a destiny clone or close to it. And it will be full of MTX too because of 2k. So don't expect a similar experience to BL2.

I had a good time with Borderlands 2 on release, and it definitely has a pretty meaty campaign to get through. I wouldn't call it particularly deep though, so I can't really get along with this thread's premise. I'll continue enjoying Destiny 2 I guess.

Destiny and No Man's Sky are both games that made dramatic turnarounds through later updates and are now pretty well respected outside of a few permanent grudge-holders. It's an odd place to start your argument from.

It is a co-op Fallout though. The main takeaway I had from FO76 was that it felt like a co-op Fallout game.

Borderlands was very shallow compared to Hellgate. While it might have a bit more depth than Destiny I wouldn't expect it to deepen games again.

I honestly don't believe Gearbox even has enough good talent left to do a decent Borderlands, so many of the original creators left for other studios between BL2 and Prequel.

I never considered Borderlands a deep game, more like a (light) sci-fi version of Diablo.

Borderlands meta and build variety is nuts and it's weird that people are trying to downplay that
Then again no one played Pre-Sequel, the best game and 2 was just Gaige's Big Fuckhouse

There's also the million containers/chests in the game few of which contain anything of note. And the constant running out of ammo.

Hah, well, Borderlands was the first game that had the 'NPCs talk to you via audio logs while you're shooting, so you don't pay attention' problem, so...

Gaige was designed to be "girlfriend mode" as Gearbox put it, stupidly overpowered. I sure hope they learn some lessons from TPS on gameplay, writing, etc.

I just think OP spelled Earth Defense Force 5 wrong..

That game will save us from everything.

It sure is taking its sweet time coming to the west tho.

I agree, the actual accessibility of the game is very straightforward but the build depth is pretty wild. Also team Pre-Sequel here.

Borderlands is about as shallow as Fallout 4 is, so I wouldn't expect much from Borderlands 3. If anything Fallout 76 is deeper than most of the Borderlands games.

There is nothing shallow about Destiny, stop living in 2014, a lot has changed.

Not every game can be Diablo with random loot, in games where players can battle other players there has to be balance consideration. Borderlands didn't have true PvP so there was no reason to Nerf guns that shot cannon balls that turned into little grenades or whatever out of the Barrel.

I also think Fallout 4 was horrible

Destiny is ridiculously shallow. It's a loot game where none of the armor really matters and guns come down to outlaw, rampage, kill clip or immediately delete.

Classes all play pretty much the same with only slight differences in jumps/melee to separate them. Thousand cuts hunter is probably the most distinct style.

Power level is just a "you must be this tall to ride this ride" and basically does nothing to change the feel of the game. You do a little more or less damage within a certain range and that's it.

Destiny is pretty fucking shallow. I couldn't be more ready for Borderland 3.

Strange, I found Borderlands 2 to be extremely dull and tedious off the back of the first one. Mixed with the poor humour and I dropped it like a brick. Love me some Destiny and No Man's Sky though, so I hope we don't get whatever future you're hoping for here. Haven't played Fallout 76 after 4 disappointed though, so you might be right there for all I know.
Destiny set the trend for shallow games with little content
It didn't do anything of the sort lol.
Released the next year:
  • The Witcher 3
  • Bloodborne
A large number of people have one of the two as their game of the generation.

With borderlands 1 and 2 being the original bullet sponge game I'm quite surprised by your readiness my chipper friend.

I don't know about shallow vs not shallow, but Borderlands 2 is one of my all time favorite games and I'm much more interested in more Borderlands than Fallout 76 (or even a Fallout 5 for that matter).
