I wonder where FFXV ended up for PS4. Probably 2.5 million I'm thinking

I'm sure it must have made the top 20

Shows that Phil made the right decision to first improve their hardware (and software) platform, and concentrate on their 1P offerings afterwards.

Also, given that NPD doesn't track microtransactions, by now Halo 5 has probably surpassed Halo 3 in terms of revenue.

Zhuge, you said PS4's list starts at notably over 3 mil. Think you can tell us where Xbox list starts at?

It would be the same list in europe with some Fifa taking a few spots.

We're in a global world nowadays and when you put all of society into a pool it's going to be a pretty homogenized mess. We all have the same shit taste as one another when viewed in a group of tens of millions.

I mean, do we get this when Japan is full of RPGs? I understand encouraging diversity, bit this is a reflection of popularity, and these games are fairly different even though they share the same perspective. GTA5, Cod, Battlefield, Halo are world's worlds apart despite focusing on guns.

I get you but America is pretty big as a single market, its still disappointing to see a lack in variation like this. Comparing the differences is all fine and good if you're a fan of FPS games in general but if you're not, they're basically the same for all intents and purposes.

I'm more just sad for the people who only play those games because it's like only ever watching Michael Bay films. I mean sure, you're well catered but there's a whole world out there to explore.

Wonder what a comparable COD on Switch would do.

That's a couple of depressing lists. Expected though.

PS4 should look a bit better soon with RDR2 and Spider-Man, but still.

MTX for sure helped.

"What Halo did with Halo 5 is free DLC," explained Pachter. "And Halo issued free DLC every month…Six months of free DLC. And what they told me at Microsoft and 343 Industries was that the cumulative spending in micro-transactions on Halo 5 for that six months was greater than all DLC sales for any Halo game ever. Not cumulative for all games, but each game."

Ya man. Everyone trying to say it flopped.
Yeah, people did try to create this narrative based on Amazon/Monthly played charts, even though we knew it done well based on an official press release. Always nice to see facts expose lies and misinformation.

Not surprised, people here think the exclusives are the biggest sellers for PS4 and Xbox One but it is not, i'm pretty sure GTA V alone sold more PS4/One than exclusive titles.

It might be again

God of war was also massive in Europe and had impressive legs in other regions

I'm curious to see the effect the gow3 remastered on plus might have down the line

I don't think it was outside of the most hardcore gaming community. The first game was released so late in Europe that the 360 has been announced.i think that really slowed it down here

It's so insane that GTA 5 is at the top for both, when it's a game that originally released for the prev gen. What a beast.

It's interesting that on both consoles, only one game in the top 10 is 1st party. Not surprising, but interesting given the common sentiment of "exclusives sell systems." Maybe that only really applies to Nintendo.

Exclusives are what separate themselves from the competition and these games are just the biggest sellers

I'm sure Sony worldwide has Uncharted , HZD and a few other over a million. The PS4 list starts out at 3 million if I read correctly

I would really like to know if Destiny underperformed on PS4 or did NBA 2k sell more than a lot of games on the Xbox list

This chart is for dollar and doesn't count the game sold in bundle. So Horizon and Uncharted (and even TLoU) aren't on that list for a reason but all of that sold tons of copies. Like Zhuge said Uncharted have sold more than 3 million only with bundle in US, Bloodborne 2 million more or less (US only). So all the exclusive have done pretty well and maybe way above expectations .

Btw. One of the reasons WW2 is higher than BO3 on this list, other than the fact it was well received by the public, is that WW2 didn't have last gen versions. So all the sales are on PS4/XB1 and not split between 4 consoles. Also, BO3 was heavily bundled whilst WW2 wasn't.

It's always been a means to diminish the competition. The data has never supported the argument that exclusives carry a system.

They do sell systems; this list doesn't do anything to dispute that.

And I would think first 3rd party games like COD have a bigger general draw and second Sony 1st party titles get more bundled to reach more people to buy a PS4. 1st party titles are "free" so to speak in bundles for Sony or MS. 3rd party titles cost more, because the publisher wants a piece of the pie.

So happy to see God of war in there. An absolutely amazing game that sold copies and not really bundled.

The truth about halo 5 puts me off places like this to be honest. So many people out of touch and spreading bullshit.

I'm surprised RB6:S hasn't surpassed Halo 5... Its long been the more popular game on XBL.

Maybe the draw if having a campaign pushed Halo over the edge?...

Everyone that doubted Halo's relevancy...

Kinda... We have no idea what it sold compared to previous entries. We have no idea what it sold compared to number 7 on the list. Or how distant it is from number 1 on list.

I really hate the term "relevancy" - it's always been clear that Halo is MS' most powerful IP. But currently, it's likely much less powerful than the franchises that beat it out, and that hasn't always been true.

If you would have said last gen that Battlefield would sell more on Xbox than Halo (despite a 1 year head start) you would have been called a madman...

The lack of diversity in these charts is shocking.

People really like to shoot shit huh?

I'd love to know the age and sex breakdowns. Consoles AAA games have always struck me as a 13-28 y.o. mostly male thing. Like what is the breakdown in GTAO?

If you look beyond AAA videogames, to all of gaming, including mobile, board, pnp, and irl sports, shooting isn't a big deal.

you need both to be market leader, hence ms buying studios.

You need both to round out your portfolio. First party covers gaps that third party games do not fulfill and maintains momentum during traditional seasonal lulls.

You have no definitive data to support market position relative to first party output because it doesn't exist.

Rainbow Six is an interesting case.

Its opening month was considerably low compared to the heavy hitting titles you see in the top 10. But it has continued to sell quite well each month to the point that unit sales are now quite high. But it is worth noting the game has been discounted a lot. So it doesn't rank as high on the revenue chart as it would on a chart by unit sales.

It's almost a very similar case to Battlefield 4 which also saw heavy discounting.

I'm going to guess GTA5 is around 25-30 million on PS4. Thats really impressive for a lastgen game. NVM I'm thinking WW numbers.

Btw. When you look at first party vs third party you should always use the 80/20 rule for MS/Sony platforms.

80% of the sales are from third party games. 20% are from 1st party games. The split in the US isn't far off that rule. (Actually both Sony and MS are skewing a bit lower than 20%).
